Mariana's POV

"Come on Mar, mates rates" Freddie persisted
"No, you get the same as everyone else now do you want a ticket or not?" I asked
He sighed
"Fine, put me down for Slieve Gallion" he said.

"You sure? Wool winder is set to place high" I told him
"I'm sure, I'm like you and Tommy... I have the gift" he joked, setting off down the street
"Mm the gift of the gab maybe" I said back
"What can I say? I'm a charmer" he grinned at some girls walking past as he left.

Idiot.
"How long we got left?" Tommy asked, appearing round the corner with Arthur close behind
"About half an hour" I said, checking my pocket watch

I had been right, of course I had been
Running our own racket among our classmates was a good idea, because we had been raking it in for a month now.

And even though me and Tommy hadn't addressed that night a few months back, we were okay. We were best friends after all.

"Call it a day then?" Arthur suggested
"Sure, I'm knackered" I said, setting off for the Garrison down the road
"Right, I have to go, make sure you drop in on aunt Polly yeah? She said she had something for you" Arthur said.

I nodded
"Where are you going?" I asked
"Never mind you" he said, wandering off down the next street, heading for the canal.

"I'll meet you there" I said to Tommy, who nodded as I stopped at Polly's house
"Finally, I thought Arthur had forgotten" Polly said
"Well I'm here, what do you want?" I asked, heading into the front room.

"Charming" she said, watching on as I picked Anna up, Michael sat playing with some blocks by the fire
"Sorry, long day" I said
"Mm, I've heard all about your day" she said, sitting down

"Meaning?" I sighed. She knew
"I know"
"Know what?" I feigned confusion
"I know that you're running around taking bets for the derby" she said
"All business is good business right?" I asked.

"Not when it's illegal" she said
"Oh come on Polly, I'm just trying to make a bit of extra money, god knows we need it" I said
"I know" she said, looking down briefly
"I know it's tough for your mum, not being able to work an-"

"Work, Polly I'm glad she's not working, you think me and David don't know all the shit she does behind the scenes, she doesn't make a living off fucking healing alone" I said
"No, but she does what she needs to, to keep a roof over your heads" she said.
