PROLOGUE

A feather fell, gliding downwards to the merriment held in the grand palace of Tian. Its gradual drift in the air caught the attention of a few guests yet nobody moved, merely watching as it landed on the god's open palm.

Seated on the conspicuous throne, the god's ivory skin clothed in golden brocade appeared paler however, it took none of his vitality and imposing opulence.

By then, more feathers fell. The cyan plumes were like large drops of rain from afar. Seeing that distinct color, all music ceased as if frozen by time. The cheerful clamor disappeared and everyone's attention centered on the goddess at the entrance arch. Her body was draped in celestial clothes like the other deities around her and just like how the gold hues were solely made for the Emperor of Heaven, red was the designated color for the Queen of Heaven.

The San Qing Niang gradually descended behind her one by one, varying in size and creating an ostentatious scene inside the palace court with a mixture of blue and green plumage. Their shrill resounded amidst the silence before it was replaced by heavy footsteps. Yet from the flutter of the Queen's long sleeves and silken skirts, it was as if she was merely floating, exuding an ethereal grace that contradicted the fierceness reflected on her face.

Her furrowed brows became more prominent as she approached the Jade Emperor, Yu Huang. Her eyelids, which were similarly shaped to the birds accompanying her, squinted — intensifying the sharpness of her facial features.

It did not take long before everyone dispersed. After all, when Xi Wang Mu would leave her peach garden to seek the emperor of the heavens, nothing good could come out of her visit.

"Yu Huang!" Her voice thundered, worthy of being the queen for she was the only one who could call the Jade Emperor in such a way.

Without taking his eyes off her, Yu Huang took the porcelain jar and poured wine into the cup before offering it to her. Despite being the sovereign ruler of Tian, Yu Huang had always maintained a certain gentleness that could charm anybody, save for Xi Wang Mu.

His obliviousness simply fueled her anger. She tossed the cup away, shattering as it reached the marble floors.

In that instant, both wore the same expressions, scowling as if they owed each other a lifetime debt. Who would have thought that once upon a time, this was a couple celebrated by all realms?

"Explain yourself! How dare you break the oath?" Xi Wang Mu's voice rang once more.

Yu Huang refused to answer while standing up, obviously not wanting to deal with her interrogation.

"How can you do this to my only child? Where is your conscience?" The grievance and anger laced in her voice caused Yu Huang to look at her, scoffing.

"Only child? Perhaps have you forgotten we have children as well?" His face darkened as he spoke but Xi Wang Mu had long been accustomed to treating his emotions as farce.

"You know better what I was pertaining about."

He arched a brow. "Do I?"

Another match of glaring ensued before Yu Huang acquiesced. He shook his head in surrender, knowing his indulgence was the reason why Xi Wang Mu always had her way and could comfortably walk sideways in all realms.

"I trust you are aware how your child is one of the strongest demigods in all pantheons, aren't you? Above all, what do you fear when you made certain she will be far from harm beforehand?"

The hidden implication startled Xi Wang Mu, making Yu Huang chuckle.

"Did you truly think I won't know?" A sneer crossed his face. "I admire the arrogance of accusing me about breaking the oath when you're the first one who did it, my dear."

The Jade Emperor smiled, returning to his temperate mien while leaving Xi Wang Mu with an ashen face and thousands of thoughts to reconsider.
