Dark

We emerged from the dark room, leaving behind the disappointment of shattered sculptures and the despair of torn portraits. The street lights cast rays of hope and clarity across the otherwise dark and desolate sidewalk. The air was sweeter now, the atmosphere calm. The usual hubbub of the city had died down. By nightfall, Basin City had become a shell of itself.

The serene air did nothing to calm my emotions. I followed Louis through the streets like an animal stalking its prey. I needed him.  That was the only thought running through my mind, and through my body. The desire coursed through my veins, bringing my heart rate alarmingly high. His rapid pace matched the racing of my pulse step for step. God knows how much longer I could wait.

At that moment, I couldn't help but realize just how little I fit in. My go-go-go attitude and constant activity didn't match the lazy, sleepy feel of this part of the city. Louis was the same way. When we first stepped onto that concrete, into the hubbub of city life, that was where we belonged. With the streets that shook with each passing train, with the young entreprenuers rushing to get to their jobs. So why was Louis now leading me to the tired part of the city?

Its sidewalks and buildings were scarred with the joy and the popularity that it once possessed. But now it was quiet, content to continue on as a has-been. I hoped I wouldn't end up like that. I've lived my whole life on adrenaline, on hope, on fear, and on possibility. It wouldn't be fair for me to rest on my laurels in old age and reminisce, and maybe even regret my choices. I couln't let myself do that, which is why I had to act immediately. I couldn't dam this river of emotions, of passion, that I felt for Louis. So, I acted.

I reached out my hand and pulled Louis into the next alley that we passed. It was dark, it was secluded, and it was all that I needed.
