Once upon a time, I was a young girl who watched the sky shatter as vivid colors broke and expanded across the heavens with a loud cackle and pop. I was a young girl who watched cake be served year after year, the sign of my name uninhibited on the cake. The candles were blown, flickering as each intake of breath began flowing through them. As a child, I had once asked my mother if they were to celebrate my birthday. To which she said no, that we had no money left to celebrate.
