[ EXCERPT FROM “To Promise You,” Chapter One ]
“I was beginning to think you had forgotten about me," he hummed.
A fake laugh followed. "That's quite interesting, Mr. Midoriya Izuku. Especially since we made sure that you were unconscious for quite some time."
Izuku shrugged. "What can I say? I'm not like the other students at UA."
"That you aren't." The blindfold was yanked from Izuku's head, leaving him to look into a bright lamp. He squinted, ducking his head. A large hand fisted in his hair to bring him upward.
"Cute," was the only comeback that came to mind. Izuku attempted blinking, trying to adjust from complete darkness to too much light. "You know, for a villain group or whatever you call yourselves, you sure follow a lot of the police's tactics."
A woman came into his line of sight, her long red hair highlighted beautifully. "For a kid, you sure are cocky."
Let's make sure you continue to believe that, he thought. "What can I say." Izuku shrugged, a chuckle escaping past his lips. "You can call it a gift."
The woman hummed, crossing his arms. "Are you sure it wasn't given to you from a certain someone?"
"Who knows." Izuku watched her as she sauntered towards a table. "People tend to be like sponges. They soak up whatever's made available to them. For some, it's an advantage in certain situations."
"And for those few others?"
Izuku was struggling to hide his uneasiness when she picked up a syringe filled with black liquid. His brows furrowed. "It's a curse."
