Bucky was a little off today when he came to visit Gwen. He’d had a nightmare and had taken a long time to get out of his Winter Soldier mindset, even having had to call Sam at four in the morning to talk him down. He was still attempting to adjust to being back to himself— he’d promised Gwen he’d come and see her today, though, and he was not letting her down, so here he was, knocking on the door. “Guess who?” He called playfully, forcing energy into his voice and a smile onto his face.
Bucky smiled and leaned into her small hands, reaching up to gently take hold of one of them in his own bigger, metal one. “That’s okay. I’m doing better now,” he promised, which wasn’t a lie; he was most certainly doing much better than he had been. His eyes softened and he glanced to the wolf on the bed, giving him a silent thank you in his head for helping the little one whom he’d come to care for so much when he couldn’t be there. “I’m glad he helps you,” he said sincerely, then laughed— and, admittedly, went a little red at the thought of having a stuffed animal, but he’d get himself one, if only for little Gwen’s peace of mind— then shook his head fondly. “No, kiddo,” he said, a little more serious, but not stern. “I am not gonna come over here and wake you up. I have grown-up friends and a therapist who are trained to help me with my problems— you don’t need to worry about them. You just worry about being a kid, okay? Adults and kids— they aren’t… friends. If an adult ever tries to be your ‘friend,’ you let me know, you understand? This… god, this is gonna sound mean, but we’re not… friends. If an adult wants to be friend with a kid, most of the time they want… somethin’ bad. You’ll understand when you’re older.” // she asks him something like “if we’re not friends then what are we?” and he brings up that he’s been thinking about fostering/adopting her-
[ @soldiersghost ] gwen frowned. it was hard for her to imagine bucky being afraid of anything, but she knew he’d never lie to her. it made her sad that he had a rough night. “ m’sorry y-you had a n-nightmare. ” she told him, reaching out to pat his scruffy cheeks with her little hands. “ i h-have nightmares t-too sometimes. b-but erik a-always makes m-me feel b-better, ” she said, gesturing back to the little white wolf he had given her that sat on her bed. “ w-we should g-get you a s-stuffie too! th-that way y-you won’t be a-alone when y-you wake up. o-or you can j-just c-come over an-and wake me u-up. i w-won’t mind. ” she paused. “ y-you might h-have to c-come in the w-window though. m-miss paige d-doesn’t let a-anyone in a-after dark. b-but you’re different. y-you’re my b-best friend, so y-you get to come i-in. ”
Bucky laughed, a little more genuine this time as he reached down to playfully ruffle her hair. He loved to see her, too; it was just, today had been a hard day. At her question, he bit his lip; he didn’t want to lie to her. Not only was it wrong, she could tell if he wasn’t telling the truth. “Today’s been kind of hard, for me,” he admitted, kneeling down in front of her once they were both in the room. “I’m a bit off my game. I had a bad dream last night, and I’m still trying to feel like myself again. But seeing you has already made me feel so much better.” He managed a smile, hoping being honest was the right choice. He wanted to show her that adults could and should be vulnerable and honest about their feelings.
It wasn’t often Steve took patrols— really, that was more Spider-Man and Sam’s thing, and occasionally Tony would pitch in, but tonight, he hadn’t had anything better to do, so here he was, stalking backalleys looking for anything suspicious and listening to his SHIELD radio as well for any new developments. So far, nothing interesting had happened— until he heard a little girl screaming for help. His eyes widened and he leapt up a fire escape, racing over rooftops until he figured out where the sound was coming from. Seeing red, Steve didn’t even have to think before jumping down, landing in a somersault and springing to his feet to slam his shield into her assailant’s chest, knocking him to the ground and sending his gun clattering from his hand. Steve placed one heavy boot on the man’s chest to keep him still, glaring down at him. “Not today,” he said, voice full of anger. He got really protective when it came to kids— and he was glad for it, once he had the man subdued and tied up and took a moment to look at the little girl. His eyes widened and flashed with recognition when he saw her face. “Gwen? Man, you just can’t keep away from these guys, huh, kid?”
Since the full moon when the two had found each other, Steve had been visiting Gwen as often as he could in the girls’ home, finding her company the best he’d shared in a long time. Today, he’d brought her a watercolor painting he’d done, of a big black wolf sitting on a log, surrounded by a happy forest, little animals skittering around its paws and an amused but fond expression on its face as it watched a little white pup play about a clearing full of brightly colored flowers. He hoped she’d like it— he’d discovered that he liked making art just for fun, instead of picturing it going towards a profit. The sketch had bloomed from the tip of his pencil, and the piece had slowly come to life from there— but most importantly, Steve had thoroughly enjoyed making it. This little girl was really starting to bring out the best in him; he could see it. Strangely, he wasn’t opposed. Steve knocked on Gwen’s door, having already spoken with Miss Paige. “Gwen? Hey, kiddo, it’s Steve. I’ve got a surprise for you.”
[ @grinninghowls ] gwen bounced happily on her toes, a bright smile lighting up her face. “ i l-love it! th-thank you! ” she chirped, throwing her little arms around his neck and hugging him tightly. she had grown very attached to steve in the time he had begun to come visit her. every time he came to see her, it seemed like their time spent together got shorter and shorter and she found herself wanting to go with him when he left. she would definitely consider him to be her best friend.
Steve smiled broadly when he saw that she liked it, sitting down on the floor in front of her to be closer to her eye level as he watched her reaction with a proud feeling in his heart. He was glad he was able to make her happy. “I did,” he said with a big grin. “Thanks, kiddo. I’m happy you like it. I painted it just for you.”
[ @grinninghowls ] a tiny gasp escaped her little lips as she gently took the painting into her little pants, examining it carefully and holding it was though it might shatter in her gasp if she wasn’t careful. “ d-did you p-paint this y-yourself? ” she asked him, looking up at him with bright eyes. “ it’s s-so pretty! ”
“Woah! Child— in the way—” Jamie yanked hard on his web, ending up flying way over the little girl’s head. He tried to shoot another web but missed, yelping as he hit the ground. “Ow,” he groaned, now lying on the sidewalk staring up at the dark sky. Suddenly, the little girl’s face appeared in his field of vision, and he held up a peace sign. “Hey, kid.”
[ @howlingspiders ] gwen had watched the boy swing out of seemingly nowhere and instead of feeling afraid, she was rather curious as to what he was / doing. / she hovered her face over his when he fell to the ground, cocking her head. “ are y-you okay? ” she questioned, her brow furrowing. “ s-sorry, i d-didn’t see you o-or i would h-have gotten out o-of th-the way. ”

“Gwen,” Bucky called, a grin on his face, “guess what?” But he paused in the doorway to her room, finding her sitting on her bed, looking upset. His demeanor changed within an instant and he was walking towards her, reaching out a hand to hover over her shoulder but not touching just yet. “Hey,” he said softly, voice gentle as he crouched down in front of her, “what’s wrong, kiddo? Did something happen, are you alright?”

“What the— whoa! Hey, kid, what’s wrong? What happened to you? Do you need help?” Steve couldn’t help the questions that tumbled from his lips as he knelt in front of the bloodied little girl that had just run into his legs, eyes wide as he looked at her sweet, tearstained little face. His heart ached for her. “Who did this to you, sweetheart?”
[ @brooklynspunk ] at that, gwen shook her head rapidly. “ th-they found m-me at the h-home, ” she whispered. “ m-miss paige t-told me to r-run. i c-can’t go b-back, they’ll c-come back for m-me an-and i d-don’t want m-miss paige an-and my friends t-to get hurt b-because of me. ” she told him as a couple more tears made their way down her cheeks.
Steve gave her a gentle smile, though his blue eyes were sorrowful and looked almost pained. He wanted nothing more than to pull her close and keep her safe from the harsh world around her— but that was ridiculous, he told himself. He’d just met this kid. She probably had a family waiting anxiously for her to come home. But at her next words, he realized… maybe she didn’t have a family at all. Still, he forced his smile to stay. “Yeah… I’ll keep you safe,” he promised. “Do you know which way they went? What they look like? I can call in the police and they’ll take care of ‘em,” he said, voice remaining even and calm. “In the meantime, do you have anywhere you can go? Do you know where you live? I’ll walk you.”
[ @brooklynspunk ] gwen sniffled pathetically, her lips trembling as she tuned her hearing into his heartbeat so she could see if he was lying to her or not. when his heart didn’t skip, she looked back up at his face and suddenly realized who she was taking to. “ i kn-know you, ” she choked out, wiping her little nose with the back of her hand. “ m-my mama u-used to l-like listening t-to you t-talk on th-the news. ”
