Makaradhwaja

Emerged from its guts - a boy of glory

reddened by blood, with an untold story.

Hairs white on face but pristine youthful eyes

an infant at heart but a giant in size.

He leapt away from his unfitting womb

but the guards were keen on making his tomb

right then and there, with their brute and their tools

but he, quite quickly, outpowered these fools!

Tossed one right at the feet of the Seer

one was found hanging on the chandelier

two heads were clashed as to exchange their thoughts

vases were broken, broken were the pots.

As the guards flew off, his image was clear

he had a monkey's trunk but a fish's rear

his arms were brawny and body well built

his head, cool and calm and legs long like stilts

his mermaid-like tail billows like a flag

smooth like a gazelle and strong like a stag

the claws were sharp, of his hands and his legs

even with all his strength, for peace he begs

Ahiravana: Who are you, my Makara riding guest?

Such a strong lad, may your parents be blessed.

What were you doing inside of this beast?

And if you are willing, let's have a feast!

I don't know who I am, the boy said

I do not look like you, he crouched his head

nor like this Makara from which I came

I know not my parents, don't know my name

how come I happen to be on this ride

I am at a loss, the boy almost cried

Ahiravana: Do not worry, I will take care of you

you'll have a father in me, a life new

a mother too, the most beautiful one

you shall now live in the land of no sun.

I'll show you your ma, as bright as the east

our talk now is done, let's enjoy the feast.

Makaradhwaja will be your name from today

let us now go to the feast, right away!

The feast was set, the fishermen were fed

next day a sacrifice, chop went their heads!

The Seer also ate but not with his heart

new son was a bad omen in his art.

Makaradhwaja quickly climbed up the ranks

he was made guardian as a way of thanks

he was strong and swift on both land and sea

and hence was given the Patala's key.

He was now the guardian who always won

and kept safe Patala the land of no sun!

The end
