You lied. Austin really did ask you to apply, and kept saying it would give all of you more views, but that wasn't the reason you left. There was something quite different with Alex's attitude-- and you felt it consuming you, too.
Something had shifted with him since the fight with Aksel, and you were suspicious that you were involved. Aksel wouldn't tell you, and you didn't want to bring it up around Alex, so you were stuck wondering what could've happened to cause such a big rift between them.
You really were considering applying to be on his Love or Host show, though. You'd never been on one before, and it could be fun. You would definitely have to host him. All the streamers gets hosted at the end and it's comedically melancholic— that was the whole point of the show. Alex's running joke was being desperately single and getting rejected by every girl; you couldn't possibly ruin that.
Since you were by yourself, you could be honest: you had been stalking into the depths of stan twitter at night when you couldn't sleep. They shipped Alex with so many other creators, finding suggestive clips of him and Karl or editing fancams of him with Aksel at Vidcon. It was all highly amusing, and you found yourself absentmindedly seeking out ships of him and you. You told yourself that it was just to make fun of, but did find some happiness from it...
And hope.
The option was weighing over your head: Love or Host? You knew the obvious option was to host him and write it off as a bit, but you felt yourself hesitating on the form. Choosing love would garner more views, right? Of course, you wouldn't mean it.
But you couldn't damage your relationship any further. Something was already cracking, and your ironic foundations were becoming too serious to handle. You needed to solidify that you were only friends and stop the twitter rumors before they infiltrated your account too much.
There was no way that you would degrade your account to a romance joke. It was already too hard to gain a following amongst the reigning champs of the Minecraft streamers; you loved them all but sometimes you felt a little... inferior to them. The Dream SMP could get hundreds of thousands of viewers with a snap of their hands, and you rarely passed five digits.
You'd seen quite a few female streamers get involved with a dating rumor and immediately be taken less seriously, written off as a "drama channel" and forgotten about. You were determined to make gaming your full-time career, and so you couldn't let romance scandals get in the way of that. The streamer lifestyle was definitely fun, but also you had to take it seriously if you wanted to get anywhere.
And Alex was a chronic simp; he liked too many women and never paid too much attention to one in particular. He had so many connections that you could barely keep up. He was either fighting Schlatt for Minx, retweeting all of Boze's pictures, or obsessively simping over the E-Girl Rejects on his stream. Maybe you were jealous— maybe you wished he gave you more attention than intermittent texting.
You knew you had to choose host but there was a nagging feeling in your chest: a slight pressure; a simmering heat; a true emotion. You grinned, logged back online, and sent Alex a middle-finger emoji.
You clicked "Love" and submitted the form without a second thought.
