CHAPTER SIX
THE PROSPECT OF TWIN FLAMES

WREN HAD ALWAYS been interested in the prospect of twin flames. The idea of there being someone who shares your soul, the most personal thing a person could truly feel and conjure, and to have a part of that person's soul aswell. It was a concept of home in many ways, and Wren liked to think someone had part of her soul out there, and that's why she felt so hollow inside. Maybe, she had given the best parts of herself to someone else when she fell from the stars and landed in her mother's once caring arms. She wondered if they were happy —— she hoped they were —— because maybe not all of her had to be. . .terrible. She just got the short end of the game of souls.

"I can tell it's bothering you," Regulus noted, commenting about the letter Wren had held in her shaky palms. It was the letter her mother had sent her about the Christmas party, and the fact that it was now December sent chills along the girl's spine. The two were sitting in a quiet, quant section of the dreary Slytherin dorms. She had spent he Fall break at Hogwarts, playing a nice game of wizards chess with Regulus as he stared at her in adoration. She'd never get used to someone looking at her like that.

"No, I'm bloody brilliant Reg," Wren sarcastically replied, the stress finally getting to her. She couldn't face the Dark Lord, or her mother, not trusting herself with the burden of keeping the secret that she was actually trying to take him down. Wren wondered if he could smell betrayal, if it reeked off her like her Rose perfume. Was it even betrayal if she'd never been a follower in the first place? The brunette didn't know, but she didn't care to find out.

"I'm so gonna get murdered," Wren whispered, a slight humorous tone emitting from her as she tried to brush off her fear. She hated it when she felt fear, it made her feel quite. . .weak.

"Hey, I won't let anything happen to you. I promise," Regulus spoke, placing his thin hand over Wren's own, a comforting warmth taking over the girl. A sense of home coursed through her veins, and all of her nerves screamed at her to never let go, to grasp onto his hand and never let him leave her side. And, that part of her almost managed to convince her that he had gotten that good part of her soul. That he was her twin flame. But, it was so easy and familiar to focus on that hollow part of her soul, the one that was left to dwindle her down. The one that made her into the monster she thought she was. A blush creeped onto the apples of her face as she slowly moved her hand away from his, her heart tearing in two with each movement.

"I can't— I have to— Reg, I have to take him down," Wren frantically whispered, her heart pumping as fast even after being split into two. She spoke so quietly, in case someone was listening. Regulus looked at her with a concerned —— understanding —— look. A look Wren found herself getting lost in. As much as the brunette tried to press down the tears she felt pooling behind her emerald eyes, one stream of crystal drops made it down her cheeks and out of her sunken in eyes. Regulus wiped it away with the pad of his thumb, a rare, gentle look in his eyes that he only ever seemed to save for Wren.

"I don't want to do it alone, for once, I don't want to be alone," Wren whispered truthfully, and Regulus swore he felt his heart clench and collapse. Because, he had always been alone. Never truly having a family, the only affection he got was something he had to earn, had to buy. And, maybe, he didn't want to be alone anymore either. He didn't want to feel that numbness inside him the oceans swirling through his veins cause, he wanted to feel more then bitterness. His grey, golden speckled eyes locked with glassy emerald's and Regulus Black swore he had gotten lost in them. But this was another type of lost, the one where he could get out anytime he wanted. Get back to the real world, but he didn't want to.

Regulus Black found he liked being tangled up in Wren Stonem's limbs on the plush couch in Slytherin dorms. "You won't be alone, My Star, I'm with you every sorta miserable step of the way."

Even if it was a death wish.

"YOU'RE TELLING me you knew about Voldemort making Horcruxes and you didn't tell me?" Wren scoffed in a hushed whisper. She had already placed a charm on her and Regulus that made it to where any other students couldn't eavesdrop, just in case. Regulus shrugged, shaking his head slightly to move the ebony coils away from his dark, sunken in eyes. The two had been working together for a bit now, and by a bit they meant a month. A month of sleepless nights, and strange feelings swarming the two like bitter thoughts and mornings after rain.

"Didn't seem important at the time, plus I didn't want to put you in any danger," Regulus explained shyly, the caring tone so uncharacteristic for him that it made Wren almost falter. But the brunette was never one to dwell on feelings or strange tones.

"Whatever— this is crucial, Reg! Bloody hell, this is the key to. . .everything," the girl whispered, suddenly very interested in the sleek, shiny flats she wore until she focused back on Regulus with wide eyes. This was her chance to finally put an end to this, and keep the ones she loved safe. Wren didn't know much about love, or any feelings for that matter, but she did know that feeling. That feeling as if a limb has been attached to you, as if that person was so close to your mind and soul they connected your organs together, and without them you would simply tear apart. That's how she felt with Severine and Regulus, as if she were just scattered pieces of ash sprinkled over them, never really gone but never really fully there. Wren was terrible at loving, but loved with every piece of her.

"Do you even know what a horcrux is?" Wren asked in annoyance, noticing the boy's confused look.

"I mean yeah— I've been reading about it or whatever. Yes, I know what it is," Regulus dryly chuckled, clearly tired out by this whole situation. They were both just kids forced to hold the prophecy of life in their cracked palms, and slowly the heat from life was warming and burning their skin. Not even Wren was used to this heat.

Wren playfully rolled her eyes at the boy, that childish glow he only seemed to get out of her pinching at her skin as her emerald eyes seemed to glow a bit brighter. "Brilliant," Wren sarcastically spoke, as Regulus sent her one of those sickly sweet smiles that made her feel like her stomach was erupting with sparks of fireworks and fireflies. Stupid boys, she thought. But, what comes after that moment of free falling comes the tense atmosphere. It always seemed to be lurking over the pair, eating away at their pre made corpses. Because what they were planning —— doing —— was certainly a death wish, and only one of them was beginning to realize it.

"Promise me," Regulus suddenly spoke, his eyes melting into Wren's confused ones. "Promise me you won't leave. . . won't become a ghost," the boy spoke as if he were seeing phantoms in his line of sight. The Stonem girl was slightly taken aback, but nevertheless slowly went to grab his hand. She thought it was strange at first, that she was feeling the heat of his palm and that she was cold, when she was the one born with fire in her veins. It didn't matter, because that warmth felt nice, it felt familiar but alien all at once and it sent Wren in a spiral of wanting to let go but wanting to keep that feeling forever.

"I won't— I'm not a ghost, Reg. I never will be, you want to know why?" Wren asked softly, as Regulus slowly nodded, squeezing her hand even harder. Wren was scared that he was going to shatter into millions of pieces in front of her. The atmosphere felt fragile. She wondered if that's what caring things were supposed to feel like, fragile, but didn't dwell on it.

"Because my soul is scattered into millions of pieces, in you. You have all the good parts of my soul, and even if for some reason I'm gone one day, my scattered soul will still be there," Wren pressed her palm to his heart before continuing, "Not everyone is a ghost in your life, Regulus Black. Not everyone has to leave, and not everyone will," she whispered, hoping her words made sense. That for once, Wren Stonem could offer a gentleness she never had ever explored. And when Regulus brought her in for a rare hug, Wren was brought back to the prospect of twin flames.

She wondered if she had found hers.

AUTHOR'S NOTE
i know there relationship is rushed and messy and stuff but that's how i imagine them. i just want to say this story isn't going to be perfect, and i'm writing this because it's a comfort to me and yeah.
also not the foreshadowing in this chapter 😁🤨
and i've finished writing for this book so expect
frequent chapters. also, a sirius black book is coming soon that connects to this book and a third book in the golden trio era so that's kinda cute
