Tw: Drug use

Kenma's POV

Kuroo and I ended up at the cafe by my house, and apparently by his. I didn't have money on me though but he insisted he'd buy me a hot chocolate anyways. I felt sort indebted by taking his money but he assured me it was fine and that he wanted to.

"Is it good?" He asked once we'd gotten our orders. I nodded my head and continued to sip the hot drink. Again that stupid nervousness was back, it hadn't left since Kuroo met with me at the ice skating rink. I've always been an awkward person but I was never really nervous around Kuroo, what happened last night to change that? "Are you ok?"

"Huh?" I didn't exactly hear what he said, I was a little distracted.

"You look sort of red, did you get a fever?" Now that he mentioned it my face did feel a bit hot, I guess I could've gotten a fever I was walking around without a jacket earlier. On our walk to the cafe Kuroo gave me his jacket, he said his long sleeve shirt was warm enough although I doubt it. I had short sleeves though and I was freezing so I took it.

"I'm fine." By the time we got to the cafe it was already becoming dark, we took a long detour through the park beforehand, and I didn't exactly know what to do know. I defiantly didn't want to go home since she'd still be there, but I didn't really want to bother Kuroo with housing me after he paid for my drink, gave me his jacket, and stuck around me all day.

"Hey Kenma can I ask you something?" I looked away form my drink and up at Kuroo, I only noticed now but his face was pretty red too. Maybe we both got fevers? "What would you think about-" He was cut off by my phone ringing. I look at the caller ID, Mei, otherwise known as my mom. I just stared at the phone while it rung not really wanting to answer it, however, I knew I'd be worse off if I didn't. So I slowly hit the accept button and put my phone up to my ear.

"Hello?" I asked quietly.

"When will you be home Kozume? Are you still practicing?" Her voice was calm, nothing like it was previously, she almost talked like a normal mother, almost.

"I'm still practicing." I lied, I noticed Kuroo looked at me a bit confused probably because I defiantly wasn't still practicing.

"I'm going to leave at 11, can I see you home before then? I don't want to be the bad guy here but I never get to see you." Of course she'd play the lonely mother card. Acting like she doesn't have other kids living with her boyfriend somewhere she could so easily run off to. Honestly I'd prefer if both my parents just left, it'd be easier then her desperately trying to cling onto me.

"Ok." I wanted so badly to say no but I knew I'd be seeing her again in a few days. Unlike before there wasn't two weeks between visits anymore, no time for her to forget what I said or did the previous time. It'd be better if I just went along with it.

"Thank you Kozume, see you later."

"Bye." I hung up the phone and laid my head on my arms, which rested on the cafe table.

"What happened?" Kuroo's voice was very different then my moms. She acted like she cared and she put on a fake voice of concern but when Kuroo spoke to me it didn't feel fake. He actually was concerned.

"I need to be home before 11." I didn't lift my head up from the table once, doing my best to hide the worry that I'm sure was leaking into my expression.

"Kenma." I mumbled into my arm as a response. "Kenma." He said again causing me to lift my head to look at him.

"What?"

"Call me if something happens, I'll come get you."

I stood outside my apartment door at nine pm knowing fully well that she'd still be in there, yet still hoping she had left already. Slowly I creaked the door open and made my way into the small house, taking my shoes off as I entered. She was still sitting on the couch but this time hunched over and writing something on a small piece of paper.

"Oh Kozume perfect timing." She ushered me over to the couch frantically. I didn't know what else to do except listen to her. I sat next to her and she practically shoved the small yellow sticky note at me. "I was going to write you an apology I wasn't sure what to say so I wrote a few out but they didn't sound good so I threw them away." She was talking insanely fast I almost couldn't keep up. Surely enough though, on the side of the couch was a pile of discarded yellow sticky notes. "Anyways read it!"

Dear Kenma :),

I'm sorry that I yelled at you and slapped you when you were trying to go practice. I would never hurt you on purpose. I know I have a long way to go to be a great mother for you and I promise I'll work hard! I love you lots <3 I promise I'll be better by next visit!

It's just like the last note, and the note before that, and the note before that. They're always the same empty promises.

"What do you think?" I looked over at my mother who was smiling at me widely, anticipating my response. I noticed something different though, her eyes were extremely dilated. Looking at my mother now I notice a lot of things different from her visit a week ago. When she first arrived I didn't notice how thin she'd gotten or the small burns on her hands, but now watching her wait for my response everything was clear. It's pretty obvious to see now, she isn't even trying to get better. She's hyperactive, her eyes are dilated, and she's all twitchy.

"It's good." I responded emotionlessly, she eagerly took the note from me and continued writing. I'm not sure what drug she's on exactly but whatever it is has put her in a rather good mood. Although she wasn't this happy when she first arrived, quite the opposite actually, her moods done a full 180. I sighed and decided it'd be best to let her ride whatever drug trip she was on alone and head to my room. However, when I tried to get up I was quickly pulled back down.

"Where are you going?" She asked nervously, her eyes darting to different spots around me.

"I'm going to go to sleep." I tried to get up again but she repeated her actions and pulled me back down.

"You can't go to sleep! I need to write your letter before they take you away!" She protested still tugging on my arm but not with all that much force. I could easily have gotten away but I was more interested in what she was talking about.

"Who's gonna take me away?" I asked sitting back down and finally giving up on my escape plan.

"The government!" She sounded erratic, her happy mood quickly switched to something more paranoid and anxious. She turned back to get note and began scribbling out words.

"Mom." I called but she didn't answer. "Mom."She whipped her head around and glared at me without saying anything. "What did you take?"

"What are you talking about?" She asked frantically before turning back to scribbling out her note. It was silent for the most part, the only sound echoing through the apartment was the scrap of her pencil on the paper. After a while of aimlessly scribbling she shot her head up at the door. "Did you hear that?"

"Hear what?" I heard nothing.

"The knock on the door." There wasn't any knock on the door, what ever she took must be making her hallucinate. She grabbed my arm and pulled me towards the kitchen. "Kozume come on they're coming to get you." She dragged me behind the kitchen counter and forced me to 'hide from the government workers' who were coming to take me away apparently. After leaving me there she went to open the front door, quickly jogging back over. "They must've left."

"They must have." I responded blankly not exactly sure what to do in this situation. I'd never been with her during such a bad period, I don't even know what she took so I can't exactly help much. She grabbed a knife from the kitchen cutting board which immediately put me into alert mode.

"Kozume get behind me I'll protect you." She ushered me behind her, holding the knife in the direction of the door.

"There's no one here you don't need to protect me." I tried to reason with her but she wasn't having any of it. Instead her eyes fixated on my hand.

"Give me your hand." She instructed sternly. When I didn't move she reached out and grabbed my hand in her own. "There's a chip in your hand, that's how they track you." Still holding onto my right hand with her left, she moved the knife towards my hand. "I need to get it out." My eyes widened realizing what she planned to do as I tried to yank my hand away. Her grip was tight and not matter how much I pulled or hit her with my free hand nothing worked. She sliced the knife across the back of my hand swiftly but deeply before examining the wound.

"Mom there's no chip, no ones tracking me!" I tried to keep my cool but at this point the fear and the stinging pain were causing my brain to panic.

"It's must be in the other hand." While she was trying to grab my left hand I quickly pulled away and ran towards the front door.

"Kozume wait I'm just trying to help-" I slipped on my shoes, slammed the door shut, and bolted for the bottom floor while trying to text despite the pain.

You
Can you pick me up at the rink asap

Kuroo
Got it omw

It only took five minutes for Kuroo to met me at the rink, he even brought an extra sweatshirt of his to lend me, since I'd given his back before walking home earlier.

"Hey what happened?" He asked once he'd jogged over to me. I held out my hand and he took it immediately examining to the gash. "Did she do this?"

"She was going on about some chip the government put in me." I explained, grimacing at the events playing back in my head. He sighed rubbed his thumb on the uncut part of my hand still looking down at it.

"Do you need a place to stay for the night?" He asked clearly worried. I knew she said she'd be gone by 11, technically I only needed to be out till then. However, I didn't want to just go home around midnight, crawl into my bed, and pretend none of this was happening. I think I'd much rather be around Kuroo for the night, as uncharacteristic as that sounds for me.

"Yeah." He pulled me towards his car, eventually letting go of my hand and allowing to climb into the passengers seat. He got into the drivers side, started the car, and headed off down the dark road.
