Chapter 12

The Desolation of Smaug

(Fili POV) (BEFORE THE ELVES GOT THERE)

Kili...I think he is dying! I don't know what I would do if he were to die... we ask around Lake-town but no one seems to care. Finally we go to the Master of the Men of the Lake asking for help. I can hear him talking to his second in command, Alfrid. He was blabbing on about how we were finally off his hands and either we would be eaten or he would "make a pretty penny." I feel like we came at the worst time.

"Help us...my brother, he's sick!" I plead.

The Master only replies, "Is it infectious? Get back! Alfrid! Alfrid! Don't let them come any closer!"

"Please. We need medicine!" Ori says making one last stand.

That rat Alfrid, with his disgusting face says, "Do I look like an Apothecary?" By my beard I hate that man so much. My blood is boiling! Why the hell were they so nice to us! Now that the rest of the company is gone we stand for nothing...I know why. One simple little word can tell the story of this man, Gold. All he wanted was gold, didn't care for anything else. Alfrid continues, "Haven't we given you enough? The master's a busy man. He hasn't got time to worry about sick Dwarves. Be gone. Will you go on? Clear off.

As we turn away I mutter something that I only hope I hear....actually let me amend that statement. I hope Alfrid and the Master hears it too, "Ishkaqwi ai durugnul (I spit upon your grave; not in elvish...its in Khuzdul the language of the Dwarves).

There is only one other place we could go...Bard's house. He was probably going to send us off like everyone else did, but he is our only hope. Oin knocks on his door and Bard opens it, "No. I'm done with Dwarves. Go away."

"No, no, no! Please!" Bufur begged, "No one will help us. Kili's sick. He's very sick." Kili looked up at him and I was giving him puppy dog eyes...I can't live without my brother.

(Thorin's POV)

We sailed closer and closer to it. The Lonely Mountain. I can only imagine what Adrianna would look like if she was here right now...

She is probably off with that stupid princeling having the time of her life. Oh, Adrianna there is not a second that goes by that I don't regret what I said onto thee. I just want to sweep her off her feet and cradle her in my arms. With that Elfie Legolas it's going to be much harder. Mark my words, he is going to get what is coming to him. I will have Adrianna....she will be in her true place. With the Dwarves.

We were now approaching shores and soon we would be on foot. We trudged up the hills, and went past rocks, and just kept on walking with haste. Only the sounds of our feet marching upon the solid earth were heard, everything was quiet. Too quiet. I remember in the days of old when you would have merchants and wanderers climbing up and down this terrain. I 'twas always busy, the hustle and bustle never slept it was on going forever.

Finally Bilbo piped up, "So quiet..."

"Wasn't always like this you know. Once these slopes were lined with woodland. Trees filled with bird song," Balin joined in.

I finally speak to Bilbo, "Relax Master Baggins, we have food, we have tools, and we're making good time," I assured. I jogged forward and jumped up on a rock I was looking over dale.

"What is this place?" someone spoke up, I could not decipher who.

"It was once the city of Dale. Now it 'tis a ruin. The Desolation of Smaug," Balins words stung in my mouth. Smaug kept repeating over and over and over again inside my head. I could barely stand it.

"The sun will soon reach mid-day, we must find the hidden door into the mountain before it sets. This Way!" I call to the group.

"Wait...is this the overlook? Gandalf said for us to meet him here, and on no account were we t--" I cut Bilbo short.

"Do you see him? We have no time to wait upon the wizard. We'll go on our own. Come!" I instructed.

 ''''''''''''''''''

"Anything?!" I call to the crew.

Dwalin answers, "Nothing!" My heart dropped. We had to find the doors soon.

"If the map is true, then the Hidden Door lies directly above us," I look up from the map scanning the surrounding scene.

"UP HERE!" Bilbo calls. Thank goodness for our little Hobbit.

My smile ranges from ear to ear while running up to him. I picture Adrianna's smile, her lips soft and tender. Snapping back into reality, I congratulate Bilbo, "You have keen eyes Master Baggins."

We climbed the ongoing stairs that lead to a small platform. I couldn't help but smile when I looked on the outer walls of Erebor. What would my father think, what would my grandfather think. Surely they would be by my side in tears. Welcome home, Thorin. I couldn't help but have a single tear drip out of my eye. "This must be it," I said very anxious to see inside again, "the hidden door, let all those who doubted us rue this day!" cheered and lifted the key up in excitement. I cannot believe it! We waited a short second and we all bersted in merry cheer! This is a happy day...It will go down in the books. A Historical Marker for Erebor.

"Right...we have a key," Dwalin stated approaching the door, "which means somewhere there is a key hole!"

"The last light of Durin's Day will shine upon the key-hole," I chuckle knowing the time is approaching. Everyone stood there watching, waiting, anticipating. I slowly watched the sun go behind the horizon....and nothing had happened. "Nori," I gestured for him to use what ever method necessary to get that door open. Dwalin banged up against the door trying to break it down. Nothing was working. No key-hole, no breaking it down, no whatever Nori's technique was, nothing. I stood there and absolutely nothing had happened, I was loosing hope...maybe we were wrong. Did we read the map wrong? Did the Lord Elrond read it wrong on purpose to us so we could not come with a victory? That's it we lost the light....we failed. I turn around in defeat. the look on Bilbo face was that he was flabbergasted. He could not understand why we were leaving. Bilbo tried to say some words of encouragement but this did not work.

I dropped the key and left Bilbo to stare at the wall. What he did not know is I didn't go too far. I knew Bilbo would stay determined. If anyone could figure out what we missed it was him.

"The key-hole! Come back! Come back! It's the light of the moon! The last moon of autumn! Where's the k--? Where's the Key? Where's the--? It was here. Come on it was-- it was here. It was just--" clink Bilbo had kicked the key. It was about to fall to its doom when I placed my foot on the string to stop it. I slowly bent down making sure the key would not come out from under my foot. I practically sprinted to the door and shoved the key in...turning and then...It opened I took one step inside in awe. "Erebor."

"Thorin," Balin's voiced broke several times while he was in tears. I placed a hand on his shoulder to comfort him. He nodded and I took another step in.

"I know these walls, these halls, this stone. You remember it Balin. Chambers filled with golden light."

"I remember," He said tears streaming down his face. I couldn't help but think of how Adrianna would react to this. I always dreamed she would be with me when I opened up the mountain. When I took my rightful place as king...and she....she would have made an amazing queen. Right now we have a dragon to deal with...we must get the Arkenstone.

"Herein lies the seventh kingdom of Durin's folk, "Read Gloin, "May the heart of the mountain unite all Dwarves, in defence of this home."

"The throne of the King," Balin explained to Bilbo.

"And what's above it?" Bilbo asks.

"The Arkenstone," My heart pounded at the mention of its name.

"Arkenstone," Bilbo confirmed repeating Balin, "And what's that?"

"That, Master Burglar...is why you are here," I informed him. The company huddled around Bilbo in antisipation. He was to get the King's Jewel. Then I could summon the great Iron Fist to sleigh that horrible monster that makes thing ever so harder.
