once upon a time
under the darkest blues
the skies could offer
a grandmother settled us
on a cold persian rug
atop sands that smelt of sea
lit a candle, despite the moon
to melt her words into sounds
that were carried far and wide
by the winds and pages
she taught us about dreams
when souls truly meet
for as long as our eyes
remain closed in the night
the soul wanders in search
of things beloved
perhaps, she said, with a chuckle
it is to chase the sleep
to let it taste the wonders
and miracles in the du'a of
the last third of the night
