"YES?" A voice asked from behind me, A tall woman with brown hair stood behind me moving away from the people she'd just been speaking to with a notepad "oh" I cleared my throat
"Alic- Layla Berry" I politely put out a hand bending my fingers over slightly to look 'lady-like'
"I don't remember asking" She strode past me. I looked to the window where Tewksbury was and tried to convince him to let me leave but he only shooed me away
I sighed and turned towards the lady "I was wondering if you had any open spots for a job? I don't know mu-" "As a matter of fact; we are" She cut me off picking up some plates
"follow me" She ordered walking to what looked to be the kitchen. There were about 7 people sat on scattered chairs and 3 people cooking and washing up "What do you think?" I stepped forward and smiled but no one returned it so I wiped it away
"Average, Ask her some questions" A guy with deep brown hair shook his head to the lady
"Alright" The lady that brought me in dragged a chair to where the others were and sat on it backwards
"So you said your name was Alisalila or something like that right" I gulped remembering how I slipped up on my name "No, Layla" she crossed her eyebrows for a second then shrugged it off
"How old are you?" I let out a short breath "19 going on 20" I liked to think I looked older with shorter hair but it wasn't about what I thought
"Single? married? widowed?" A man with Blonde hair asked "shut up Thomas" The lady shushed him
"S- single" I felt slightly uncomfortable being asked that but I pushed the feeling aside "Any recommendations?" I shook my head "Any family with you?" "No, just my friend"
She nodded "and where is he?" "outside" I pointed my thumb awkwardly but luckily subtly enough to put it back down without being noticed
"any past jobs so far" I shook my head "any experience" I shook my head, I can't have the exact same description as myself
"Do you know the first thing about making a cup on tea" I hesitantly shook my head "You've got the job" She stood up
"Wait, really?" I blinked a few times in shock, I didn't think it was that easy
She hummed "Jasper here can teach to make the basic cakes" I turned around to see another boy with blonde hair wave to me nervously
(JUST PRETEND HE'S SHY FOR MY SAKE)
I smiled at him but he'd already looked away by that point
"And I guess Noah here can teach you how to make a cup of tea" A boy with more dirty blond hair and an arm wrapped around a small girl winked to me in a friendly way to show he was who she was talking about
"Then the others can introduce themselves I have to get this order to Rosie" She pointed to the back and nodded to me comfortingly striding off to the boy and hanging up the note she'd just picked up
"And I'm Marie but I'm also going to get my tea. It's lovely to meet you" a small brunette with a beautiful french accent shook my hand
"I'm Terry" The one who called me average a few minutes ago nodded "ah" I said quietly trying to show some interest and not come across rude
"I'm Delilah. Ignore that delinquent, he still thinks santa is real" The girl under Noah's arm rolled her eyes as Terry
Terry scoffed "I've explained this all to both of you many times, my parents were out all ni-" Noah Groaned "God don't get him started on that again!"
The two continues to bicker back and forth over santa so Delilah released herself from Noah's grip and came to sit on a sofa chair next to me
"So who was the lady that was just asking me questions?" I asked Delilah slightly bent over slightly
"That was Olivia, our boss, she's nice enough and let's us do whatever we want as long as we keep whatever we do back here or outside round the back and everything is still presentable out there" she pointed a finger outside. I nodded.
"You can sit down you know?" Delilah said to me over the noise "Thank you but I think I'm going to nip out and visit my friend for half an hour or so and just let him know I have the job" I slowly walked over to the door
"Oh, well um bye for now?" I nodded and smiled to her quickly walking out the door and down through the restaurant
I pushed the door open and smelt the polluted air and looked to both sides and on the left I saw him whistling to himself watching thing pass the street
I tiptoed over to him without him seeing and jumped putting my hands on his arm and saying "I got the job!" He jumped at first "Agh- Jesus what was that for! wait, you got the job?" I nodded rapidly
"you got the job!" he nodded too just as fast "right now I have half an hour, forty-five minutes at most till I have to go back so we need to make it moderately quick" He nodded
"Alright this way" We walked down into the market we'd come across before "Should I wait here?"
"Uhm, could you just wait with me?" I smiled and nodded. We walked through the market passing wonderful flowers as we went but blossoms have always been my favourite
"I think we should ask her" Tewksbury whispered to me looking over to a girl with curly ginger hair "then go ask her" I pushed him slightly and he started to fiddle nervously and whisper things under him breath "don't push me I'll get there soon" he said quietly
I rolled my eyes "Then I'll do it for you" "wait" He grabbed my arm lightly "how about I go with you, but you do the talking" I sniggered and nodded "alright"
I strode off towards the lady with Tewksbury following "Hi, I was wondering if you had any open job spaces? My friend here is looking for a place to work and he has a great passion for flowers so we thought we'd start here" The redhead turned around as soon as I began to speak
She looked up to 'Jonathan'
"Ah, well I'm not in charge but I could ask her and do a short interview with you?" He nodded shyly "that would be great" He managed to say
Once she walked away I placed my hand on his back comfortingly "Stop acting like a wimp" I said in a kind tone He shook his head "You try and do what I just did!"
I scoffed "And what exactly did you do?" "I spoke to a female!" My eyes widened appalled
"I'm a female, Enola's a female, your mother step-aunt is a female, your nana-" "Yes well I'm forced to speak to my step-aunt and nana they're family and when I first spoke to Enola I thought she was a boy!" I frowned
"and what about me?" I stuck my bottom lip out "You're just different, we just.. clicked. And I've never felt that with anyone else" I smiled admiringly looking into his eyes
"And it's not as if you act like a lady anyways" He looked away. I licked my too top of teeth "you just had to spoil it didn't you" I shook my head and sighed now in a grouchy mood and turning away from his side
The lady came back to us being careful not to knock over flowers and she walked "So I can take you for an interview now but I'm going to have to ask you to wait here.." The lady said turning to me
I bit my bottom lip "That's fine" I turned to Tewksbury "Of you get the job come back to the café when you're done or they're closed" I gave him a quick hug and began to walk away
"Wait" He called me about 4 steps away "What if I don't get the job?" I smiled and turned back around "then don't bother turning up" I walked out of the market not even listening behind me to if he'd said anything else
I finally got back and opened the door the bell going off when I did so. The lights were out but I could still see my way round the room as I passed the clean tables and got to the cold, silver door that had a circular mirror
"She back!" Delilah shouted cheerily when I walked through the door "hi" I said slightly lowly waving to everyone that was here: Delilah, Marie, Noah, Terry, Olivia and Thomas
I sat on a cafe chair which was one of the harder ones but also the only one free
Marie pulled out a Lolly "want one?" She put a blue lolly out to me "Sure, thankyou" I thanked her and unwrapped it and popped it in my mouth
Thomas pulled out a book. I felt his eyes on me as I ate my lolly so I glanced over to him and made direct eye contact I quickly looked away but I knew he hadn't
"so;" I pulled the lolly out for a second to speak "how long has everyone been working here?" I ask breaking the comfortable silence
"I've been here 3 years coming up to four" Terry said putting one leg on Olivia who shoved it off herself violently and wiped down her legs "12" My eyes widened at Olivias answer "someone had to keep Rosie in a good mood"
She laughed and everyone else seemed to too "I've been here forrr" Marie thought for a moment "6 years now I think" She stuck out her bottom lip
"Me and Noah started at the same time which was around winter 2 years ago" "Oh god I remember that" Olivia said as if reminiscing on something awful
"what?" I asked intruigued Noah laughed and shook his head "It's snowed overnight and instead of melting down the back alley the whole floor of this area" He put out his arms to demonstrate the space "Flooded" The all began to laugh again but my included this time
Everyone except for Thomas who would flick a page and stare back at me for five minutes until he looked down to his book again
"What about you thomas?" I leaned forward in my chair and shuffled a bit to get comfortable "A few months" He looked back down to his back flicking the page. I could tell no one else like the vibe he was giving off since everything had now gone quiet
"I think I'm going to head out here's the keys for whoever wants to close up tonight" She lifted her head up "Oh and tomorrow I want everyone here by 8:30, any later and you're doing the dishes the rest of the day"
I nodded but everyone else groaned "Layla I don't know if you know but that's not a good thing" Noah said to me "I know but I usually wake up at 6:30 so I'm alright" I smiled
Terry stood up "I'm making hot drinks who wants what?" He looked around. At the point Thomas stood up, grabbed his coat and left but no one seemed to mind or care
"I'll have a hot chocolate" Noah put his hand up
"Herbal tea for me thanks" Marie responder looking up from her book "what kind?" "peppermint"
He looked at me and raised his eyebrows "Could I have a hot chocolate too?" I gave him a tight lipped smile and he returned it. He headed off into the kitchen
Once the drinks were made and we'd all sat, talked and relaxed and nearly finished our drinks Noah stood up "Right I'm going to head home, do you want to come now lilah or do you wan fro make your own way?"
She looked to me "I mean I'm ready to go but I don't want to leave Layla to lock up her first time"
Terry helped out "Well I'm not leaving anytime soon my tea is still too hot" He said picking up his drink and blowing on it "yeah I'm fine here. My friend should be here within 15 minutes" I added on checking the clock
She sighed "Well I'll see you both tomorrow" She stood up and went to go grab her coat "bye" She waved good us and we waved back
Seconds later she walked back through "there's a boy waiting outside asking for you" I laughed "I'm coming" I stood up and looked around me to see if I forgot anything because I always seem to but I was alright
I walked across to Delilah and she opened the door for us and I could see him at the end and I smiled "you never told me the your friend was a man" She nudged me
I scoffed "hardly, he barely knows how to get himself dressed" I shook my head. I turned to her and she looked rather confused "we live together" I stopped her from getting any ideas
"Anything.. there?" Now it was my turn to look confused "romantically" She put it simply
"uh- no. never. absolutely not. We're just not like that" I continued to shake my head
She laughed and nodded "what does that mean" She shrugged "nothing"
"There you guys are, see you later" Noah patted Viscount on the arm and waved to me taking Delilahs hand and walking away with her "may I?"
Tewksbury put an arm out to we could link ours together. I paused for perhaps longer than I should've before taking his arm but not I seemed to now find myself rethinking my whole relationship with him; and what I really feel towards him.
