why is it so easy for people
to let the words i love you
fall out of their mouths
without even hearing it?
imagine you spilling wine
on your kitchen counter,
you bring out a wet rag
to wipe away the mess
cleaning it in one sweep
is i love you like that?
a salve to put on the wounds
you have left on somebody
hoping to make them feel better?
a punctuation mark to be put
at the end of a phrase
hoping to complete it into a sentence?
i love you is always followed by i'm sorry
why does love always sound like an apology?
