Chapter Eleven

Follow the leader

ʺI was never insane except upon occasions when my heart was touched.ʺ

- Edgar Allen Poe

ʺThat was freaky.ʺ Zach finally spoke. ʺHave you understood anything from the crazy women's riddles?ʺ

ʺNo, it was all gibberish.ʺ I slightly stuttered, not willing to tell him about my recent weary imaginations. He would think I was totally nuts and run to the hills.

Zach suddenly took my hand and began dragging me in the other direction.

ʺWhere are you taking me?ʺ

ʺWell, you still owe me a ride on the Ferris wheel.ʺ he justified in a sly tone.

Before I could deny whatsoever, his expression turned into a worried frown while he searched frantically his pockets.

ʺShit, I forgot my phone in the car.ʺ He said as he took a few steps back. ʺWait for me right here, I'll be quick.ʺ

Once he left me, I felt exposed and cold. I realized that I was all alone in a secluded part of the fair. Paranoia and another uneasy feeling submerged me, encouraging myself to quicken my pace towards the centre of the activities, where most of the people were enjoying themselves, playing games and wining prizes with young children running around with a lollipop in one hand and a big stuffed animal half their size in the other.

I thought of my trip and how much I savored it. The busy and repetitive city life persuaded me to take a vacation, an expensive ticket to freedom and a refreshing escape to a clandestine island. Hence, I wasn't oblivious of the various legends and made up rumors about paranormal happenings on the island.

As if on cue, a cold breeze sifted in my direction, giving me the chills down my spine.

To get my mind off the creepy things that could be lurking in the dark, I decided to nimble on some more cotton candy. Since I had forgotten how sticky cotton candy can be, I shortly left to wash my hands.

When I walked into the washroom, I saw a woman in the corner at the very last sink. She wore, what seemed to be a Halloween costume with an extremely tight corset which made her boobs look like they were about to fall out of their place. Furthermore, her petticoat ended quite short, right at her mid-thigh and she was in black from head to toe, including her eye makeup and lipstick, except a few pink strands of hair extension. She didn't seem too well, her eyes were red and bags sagged underneath them as if she hadn't slept in days or perhaps high on some sort of concoction.

I couldn't say that I looked any better than she once I got a glance at my reflection from the cracked mirror. The séance with the fortune teller made me uneasy and left my mind pondering. I was more than determined to truly believe and understand her sayings. Thus, I was certain that it has to be related to the sudden appearances of Sylvain and my vivid imaginations of an invisible man.

I got distracted by a sudden redness peeking through the collar of my coat. I moved the collar away where revealed a trail of more sore and red skin. It felt slightly hot and damp.

It didn't seem like something to worry about. Most likely a small allergic reaction, nothing too serious or maybe it was Sylvain's stained blood on my flesh.

The washrooms lights flickered and I turned my head to check up in the hellish looking girl. To my surprise, she was still there washing her hands carefully. I left quickly after cleaning the dried blood, feeling refreshed and ready to face a berserk ride on the Ferris wheel.

Where was he? I glanced at my watch quickly, worrisome. Zach should have been back by now. My eyes searched desperately for his person that turned out nowhere to be seen.

I decided to look for him at his car.

The parking lot was empty. His fancy car was still in the same spot, glistering in the moonlight. I gazed through the driver's window and found his phone vibrating on the seat.

If his phone was still in the car, then it meant that he still hasn't come to get it.

There was no way of contacting Zach since he didn't retrieve his phone.

Panic and worry. Those were my two irrational options.

My first reaction was to call out his name covering the entire ground of the amusement park but there wasn't a single sign of him.

All of the sudden, I heard footsteps nearby. Once I turned around, hoping it was Zach finally showing up, I spotted the young women whom I came across in the washrooms. I wondered where she was heading dressed like that and opted to follow her. Nonetheless, it wasn't worth my while waiting around for a boyfriend that seemed to have bailed on me.

I tighten my grip on my purse, getting ready for any unexpected things jumping at me or attack me in the dark.

I stayed a good 10 metres distance away from the girl, eclipsing myself in the shadows and keeping low since she was incisively looking around her.

Alas, she went into a tent, similar to the fortune tellers. I came close enough to hear low mumbling between two people.

I peered into the tent, tugging only slightly enough to get a shy glimpse of the interior. Inside the tent was mostly empty, besides an old trunk. I saw vertiginous heels and skinny legs of the Halloween girl and a cloaked man.

There was that sent again, very seducing and voluptuous essence. I couldn't help but breath it in which tickled my nose and made me sneeze without notice. I looked through the content of the tent once more. The girl has gone, but the cloaked man has stayed.

ʺCome in.ʺ he convoyed. ʺDon't be shy.ʺ

ʺShit.ʺ I silently cursed. To be honest, I swore only on rare occasions and those rare occasions were known to be the worst.

In a few seconds, he appeared right next to me, standing with great superiority and intimidating presence.

ʺAh, my sweet Tina.ʺ Sylvain stated impish.

ʺStop following me everywhere I go.ʺ I said loudly while pointing my finger at him. ʺIts already been the third time we've bumped into each other today.ʺ

ʺYou're the one found snooping around and listening to a private conversation.ʺ he remarked having the most of fun messing with me. ʺAnd you're mistaken.ʺ

ʺHow so?ʺ

ʺIt has been the fourth time that we have encountered this very day.ʺ he claimed.

Our eyes met, I couldn't help but be pulled into them. It worried me to catch my reflection in the depth of his eyes, as if my person was imprisoned in his gaze. He broke our contact first, but he only lowered his view to my neck .

ʺWhoa, wait just there.ʺ Sylvain spoke furtively.

He pushed my head to one side, holding my chin, to get a better view at my exposed neck. His two fingers circled a sensitive spot on my skin which felt a bit like a bruise.

"My blood must have given you an infection there."

Curiosity and intrigue took place on his face.

I ignored him, as I faintly wondered if what happened in my dream could stay with me once woken up.

ʺCome with me. It's getting late and the amusement park must be closing soon.ʺ Sylvain suggested.

I followed behind him through the almost empty park, mesmerizing his incredible dominant body structure. I never thought a Victorian suit could look so good on a man.

ʺHave you seen him?ʺ I asked, doubting his purpose at the fair.

ʺHave I seen who exactly?ʺ he answered slightly bewildered.

ʺZach of course. I have been searching for him. He has suddenly disappeared from me.ʺ

ʺNo, I haven't seen him.ʺ he said short and sweet.

We arrived at the parking lot when he whirled around to face me, feeling once again trapped.

ʺNow you tell me, is there anything that you would like to willingly share with a bloke like me?ʺ he questioned me with malicious spark in his eyes.

I couldn't help but think of the invisible man stuck in my apartment.

ʺNo, I got nothing in mind.ʺ

He took two steps closer to me, making me bump into the car behind me, trying to leave as much space between our bodies possible.

He came even closer to me until I could feel his slow and soft breathing on my cheek.

ʺHow about now, does anything come to your mind?ʺ he asked again.

I decided to not answer him, since I hadn't found the courage to speak.

All of the sudden, he stopped and let me go. I gasped for air, almost forgetting how to breathe.

ʺTell him that I'm also in that little game of his, and hope he considers this as a warning.ʺ he said precarious. ʺAnd that his sweet butterfly doesn't belong to him completely.ʺ

I haven't understood a single thing of what he meant, feeling dizzy and confused.

ʺNow rest my dear, it's going to be a long ride.ʺ he last said to me before I was knocked out.
