Councillor Kenric screamed.
"No. Not again. No..." He moaned, crawling backwards away from Fitz and Sophie. "C-councillor Kenric?" Fitz stuttered. He hugged Sophie, who was trembling hard. Kenric rubbed his eyes. "Alden?" he asked hazily. "Oralie?" Sophie tensed at the Councillor's name. Her mom. "It's Fitz. And Sophie." Fitz told him. "You've been sedated, Councillor Kenric. And I think you need Elwin." "Elwin." Kenric repeated. "Sophie immediately took her Imparter out and hailed Elwin. She didn't explain, just mentioned her location and told him to come quick.
A short while later, Elwin arrived.
"What the-"
"Councillor... Kenric... is alive?" Elwin whispered. "Apparently." Sophie replied. "Vespera used soporidine on him, but we gave him the antidote. But his injuries look serious. Lady Gisela used a shamkniv."
"Hail Livvy, Sophie. I'll need as much help as I can get." Sophie did as she was told. When Livvy had arrived, Fitz went to notify Alden with Sophie. They stayed at Everglen; for once, they were both glad that they could just let the adults handle everything. Sophie and Fitz were exhausted and slightly traumatized - they wanted to sleep but couldn't fall asleep; their bodies just wouldn't shut down. "Sophie, I guess this is a bad time, but..." Fitz said. "Yeah?" Sophie prompted, too tired to guess. "I... don't care about the match and I'm sorry for what I've said before... I still like you."
Sophie's breath caught. That day she'd discovered several new things:
1. Kenric was alive.
2. Lady Gisela was alive.
3. Fitz still liked her.
And she still like Fitz. She had actually been planning to say that during the walk, but things got a little... complicated, what with finding a drugged Councillor and all. But at the end of the day, this mattered too.
And sometimes, that was all that mattered.
