Chapter 3: Discovery, Part II

I awoke the next day, and found Drew already gone. Garner was sitting next to me in a chair, reading a book.

“Hey.” I said sleepily.

“Hey missy, glad to see you’re awake.”

“You could have told me, you know…”

“Huh? Oh. No, I couldn’t have we’re not allowed. It’s a vow.”

“Whatever. Is Maureen a fairy too?” He nodded. I’ve been told to tell you to go change into loose clothes, and to pick a tee shirt you don’t mind ripping. I’ll show you how.” He helped me up, and I got dressed once he left the room.

I picked a black concert tee my mom used to have. She had given it to me a few years ago. Garner showed me how to rip little slits where my wings would pop out.

“Never,” He said sternly. “Ever, wear this inside the vault. Carry it with you in your bag until we get outside. There are changing shacks we put up for the women to change in once we get out there.”

“Got it. Hey, where’s Drew?”

Garner smiled knowingly. “He woke a while before you did, and he’s already out there learning to fly.”

“I see.”

“Hey Em, did he tell you?”

I hesitated, then nodded.

“And?”

“And I blacked out before I could answer.”

“Ouch. That sucks. Poor Drew.”

“Yeah, I have to find a way to tell him….”

“Listen, I’ll distract the others once you guys learn the basics. They’ll send you on a flight test together. I’ll stall and give you guys some time.” He smiled.

“Did I ever tell you how awesome a big brother you are?”

He grinned. “Nope.”

“Well now you know.” I hugged him and ran out the door, smirking as he tried to catch me. I always was the fastest.

*~*~*

I stood in the door way, waiting for Garner to open the doors. “Ok, shield your eyes at first, then slowly lower them so your eyes can adjust.”

I did as he said. I heard a bang, the doors opening. A bright light lit up the inside of my eye lids, and in winced. I slowly lowered my hand, and opened my eyes. I gasped. The sky was so beautiful!

I jumped out of the door gazing above me, not looking where I was walking. I tripped over something underfoot, and a pair of strong arms caught me. I recognized the celtic tattoo on the wrist right away. Drew.

I smiled up at me, and his responding grin took my breath away.

“Quite a lot to take in, huh?” he said cheerfully.

“Um yeah!” We walked over to the adults, his fingers grazing mine, letting me know he wanted to hold hands.

We got to the adults, who welcomed us. They showed us how to change our wing color, retract and open our wings on command, and finally, how to fly.

At first, I could only hover a few inches off the ground. My wings were like extra muscles, and I had to condition them and learn how to use them properly.

After a few hours, I was finally zipping around, chasing Drew and playing tag with him and Garner.

Drew zoomed off behind a tall building in down town Houston, and I followed. Garner turned back, thankfully.

I followed Drew through the empty streets, trying to catch him. He finally stopped and waited for me on the top of the tallest building.

“Hey, what do you think?” He asked as he gestured to the vast view.

“I think it must have been a gorgeous view…before the attacks, I mean.”

“Yeah…..”

“Listen,” I started.

“Wait, if it’s about before, about what I said…..listen if it’s going to make things awkward if you don’t feel the same, I understand. We can just pretend it never happened and go back to being best friends, ok?”

“Well, I would agree with that. If that’s how I felt.” I smirked.

“What?”

“Drew, I-“ Before I could tell him, he was suddenly very close. Then, to surprise and delight, he kissed me.

A bright flash blinded us and we looked up.

“GARNER YOU ASS HOLE I’m GETTING YOU FOR THIS!!!!!!!” Drew screamed at me brother as he flew away.

“Anyways, you were saying?” He laughed.

“I was saying I love you too.”

“Finally.” And his lips were back on mine before I could agree.

*~*~*

“Where have you two been? We’ve been looking everywhere for you!” My dad exclaimed when we landed next to them a few minutes later.

“Sorry, we just went and got lost in the city. Garner found us and helped us back.”

“Oh, ok. Glad you’re alright. Well listen, we’ve got a lot to explain, so let’s get back inside, it’s almost been 3 and a half hours already.”

We went back inside and gathered in the main office.

Dad opened a safe in the wall and took out a hunk of sheet metal, and handed it to Drew and I.

“Here. Read this.”

“In 20 Years We Shall Return. Learn Your Powers Well.”

“What is this?” I asked.

“We found it outside. It’s part of the bomb casing the aliens dropped, probably from the very bomb that gave us these powers.” Max explained.

We were all silent. I glanced at Drew, and knew we were thinking the same thing. He finally voiced it. “So, what does this mean? They’re coming back?”

They all nodded.

“As far as we can figure,” Maryanne stated. “They viewed us as some kind of experiment. Who would survive with the bomb and abilities, and who would not? I don’t know if they’re expecting some kind of war or battle or even a fight, We have no idea. But we all need to be ready.”

“When?” I whispered.

“In 9 months.” My mom answered.

“How many more teens will undergo the changing?” Drew asked.

“About 5 or 6, we think. You both will be taught by Garner, he learned quickly and is an excellent fighter.”

We both nodded.

With that, we were dismissed to go to dinner. We changed out of our flight shirts and into normal clothes again. I met Drew outside my door, and we walked hand in hand to dinner.

We entered the dining room to Garner hooting and cat calling. “Look who’s finally got around to getting his girl!” He shouted. Everyone cheered and clapped.

I felt Drew’s grip tighten on my hand and I blushed deep red. Had all these people really known it but us? We made our way through the line and got our food, sitting with Garner and Maureen, who were making lovey eyes and it was obvious they shouldn’t be here.

“Ew, get a room already you two!” I said, throwing my straw wrapper at Garner’s face.

He sneered playfully, then kissed Maureen right in front of everyone.

Drew and I burst out laughing. I have no clue why. It was just funny. The evening ended with a bunch of the teens playing board games in the game room. Drew walked me back home and kissed me good night. I went inside, sighed, and tried to fall asleep. Not easy when my mind was replaying all the craziness from the past two days.

***Ok, I didn't realize this until afterwards, but I didn't name the character Maureen after the "Forever Your's" character. I was thinking of girl's names and it just kind of popped into my head :) Although if you haven't already, go RIGHT NOW and read "Forever Yours" its the best story on here, seriously! :D

And Please don't forget to Comment :D THanks!!
