In songs they always talk about that place. The meadow. The meadow where the sun shines down on your face and and the wind whispers a melody in your ear. Where the grass comforts you and the stream nearby assures you. The place where when you close your eyes, and you're safe. Where the magic in the world protects you.
Someday, I'll find that place. Someday I'll lay in the grass and whistle a beautiful tune. But this is now. This is the place where you trip. This is the place where you skin your knee. This is the place where every mountain you climb only leads to a bigger one. This is the place where you bleed. This is the place where you fall. And yet for some stupid reason, you get up. Every goddamn day I wonder If I will every stop climbing mountains. I look around at the people. There are people on their way to work, smiling at their phone. Or there are children on their way to school, laughing with their friends. But their smiles always fade. And I know, once I reach the top of the mountain, I'm gonna fall again, harder than last time.
Today though, today I won't let anything stop me. Now you may be wondering, what's so amazing about this cold September day? Well, today is the day I... No No I'm doing this all wrong, let me start from the beginning.
When a baby's born, their destinies are not written out for them. They could be or do anything. They could change the world. Few people realize how much of an impact they can make. Whether on their own, or by changing the life of someone else so they can reach the sky. And though almost no one realizes this. Some do.
Imperium Society. This group of "wonderful" people knows this. And they've dug their roots so deep they might as well be running the world. Few people know about them. This is a select group of people who have taken the destinies of children and twisted them for personal game. It started in the middle ages. Every year children were stolen from their families, and grown into leaders, warriors, and civilians. Each secretly making choices in the favor of Imperium. First this technique was used to control towns, then kingdoms, then countries. The leaders of Imperium have their roots so deep in society they practically run the world.
And the children and people who were manipulated by them are so brainwashed, they don't know they have a choice. They don't know they can become more than a puppet for others. They don't know they can think for themselves. They don't know they can be free.
I bet you can guess which side I'm on. I'm Seth Verdin. I'm fifteen years old and I've been a puppet for Imperium for as long as I can remember. I've watched them break my friends, and others. And they haven't broken me. Yet.
This cold September day is important because today is the day. Today is the day I escape.
