When I woke up and looked about it took me a couple of minutes to figure out where I was. I was in Matt's bedroom.
"Morning sleepy head" I looked over at Matt who was on his phone probably scrolling through facebook or instagram
"How did we get back here?" I asked rubbing my face
"We walked" He shrugged putting his phone down and turning to face me
"You walked, I walked, We walked" I said trying to piece it together in my head
"Yeah. Here" Matt handed me a glass and some painkillers and I took them
"Thank you" I smiled and he nodded
"Why are you so kind?" I asked turning onto my side to look at him
"Because you're amazing and if I didn't your twin would kill me" I shrugged
"At least the second one is true" I looked down to see I was wearing Matt's lieutenant t-shirt.
"Cindy phoned me. She's taking all the kids including Alex to the zoo. I think she said" I nodded
"Sounds fun for a non hungover person" Matt chuckled
"You okay to walk?" He asked as I sat up. I reached over and slapped his arm and Matt chuckled
"I'm hungover, not drunk" I rolled my eyes after getting out of bed. Damn it, it's cold. I looked over at Matt who was throwing his hoodie towards me. I caught it looking at him
"Was warming it up for you?" He smiled. I could tell he was lying but it was sweet anyway. I kissed him before opening the door and walking out the room as I pulled the hoodie on still shivering
"And the devil rises" I rolled my eyes
"Haha that's the funniest thing I've ever heard" I sarcastically replied rolling my eyes as I walked through to the kitchen. I poured myself a cup of coffee before
"Katie texted me cause you know she likes me better" Kelly said and I rolled my eyes
"I don't get how anyone can like us better except mom and Benny" I replied
"I was their favourite" He shrugged
"No way. You were always in trouble"
"You went against dad and became a firefighter" He replied
"And if I didn't you wouldn't be standing here right now" I reminded him
"Oh come on Jamie" He said giving me that look
"No Kelly. I always push myself to be better than you or when it comes to firefighting and someone sees the name Severide they always compare me to you or Benny. So no. I am not going to stand here and listen to you act like you are better than everyone else around you. I am fucking good at my job and I might have my flaws and I might not be as strong as you but that doesn't mean that I'm not god damn good at my job and you also have your flaws Kelly. Everyone does. You're not perfect" I ranted
"Jamie" I could see the sorry look on his face and I didn't care
"No you don't know what it was like being at 19 or in LA being the only female firefighter. No one listened to me and I pushed myself until I broke and then I came back here to get away from being compared to everyone else and to come somewhere where there are female firefighters that continue to risk their lives everyday. But maybe it wasn't the right choice. Maybe I should have taken up the Indiana job offer"
"Jamie I'm so sorry" Kelly said getting up and I took a step back
"I love Chicago. Chicago will always be my home but maybe Chicago isn't like me. Maybe I'll be like mom"
"Jamie we all love you" Kelly said and I noticed Matt nodding out the corner of my eyes
"That's not true and we both know it" I said and Kelly frowned
"What?" He asked
"Benny was on his deathbed and I was in LA probably downing a bottle of vodka while Jamie slept"
"You couldn't get here in time Jamie. Everyone knows that no matter how much you hated Benny you would have been here if you could have" Matt said walking over as I wiped the tears from my eyes
"Jamie can we please just move on? I love you and nothing will ever change the fact that you're my sister. Twin. And we are always meant to be together" I sighed as Matt handed me the cup of coffee.
"Well Elouise and I are going out for breakfast" Kelly said and I nodded
"Enjoy" I muttered ignoring the look from Elouise. Kelly walked over to the door Elouise following him
"Kels" I said and he turned around looking at me
"What?" He asked
"Aren't you forgetting something?" I replied
"No? I don't think so" He frowned
"Your keys?" I asked
"Oh yeah. Thanks" I nodded sitting on the couch.Kelly and Elouise left and soon it was just Matt and I. I cuddled into Matt's side and he wrapped an arm around me
"What are you thinking about?" He asked, looking down at me. I glanced up at him
"Just how Kelly will kill us both"
"And that's what you spend your days thinking about?" He asked and I nodded
"Pretty much yeah" Matt chuckled
"Do you want anything?" He asked and I hummed thinking about it
"You?" I asked and he chuckled
"I was meaning something to eat"
"Oh. Then no" I replied
"Kelly and I are due to help intelligence today" Matt said and I looked up at him
"I've not seen Voight in a while" I nodded
"What kind of case is it?" I asked sitting up a bit
"Arsonist. Burning people to their death" I looked at him
"That's a fun case" I nodded and he shook his head
"What?! It is. You get both sides of it. Police investigate the murder and Fire investigate the arson" I shrugged
"Yeah I guess you're right" I nodded.
"Think I could come along?" I asked and he nodded
"I don't see why not. Voight obviously trusts you" He shrugged and I smiled cuddling back into his side. I fell asleep quite quickly, obviously still very hungover and tired. When I woke up it was Kelly throwing things at me. I groaned rubbing my eyes as Matt cursed him out for waking me cause I 'obviously needed it'
"What the hell was that for?" I asked sitting up
"Because if you want to come you need to get ready now" I flipped him off
"Your overnight bag is still in the jacket cupboard" He said and I nodded while getting up. Last time I visited I left a bag with Kelly just in case I ever had to quickly leave LA. Which I don't think I'd ever have to do but it was always nice to just have a plan. I grabbed the bag walking into the bathroom. I took the outfit out which consisted of a black sleeveless turtleneck, black jeans and a maroon blazer before getting changed into it. I removed last night's makeup before walking out. I gave Matt his shirt and hoodie back. I threw in the dress and put on my shoes from last night.
"How much do you remember from last night?" Kelly asked and I looked at him seriously
"Nothing after the sixth shot" Kelly laughed
"You only had a beer after that" Matt shrugged as we walked out to Kelly's car
"Didn't you take the police exam?" Kelly asked and I nodded
"Yeah. That's how I met Hank. Why?" I asked getting into the back seat
"Just heard he was looking for another officer to make the team even" I nodded.
"I'm happy being a firefighter. Yeah I miss the cases as a detective but it's so much safer running into burning buildings than running towards bullets. But if they ever need an extra set of hands then throw me a badge and a gun" I shrugged
"No absolutely not" Kell said
"And maybe a bulletproof vest" I added
"That's better" He nodded
"Remind me how you became a detective again" Matt asked
"I got shot on the line of duty and when you get shot you get to pick where you want to go within the department, if you want to change that is, and I picked Hank's team and he promoted me" I shrugged and he nodded. When Kelly parked the car I climbed out looking at the district. Matt's hand brushing against my thigh as I glanced at him. He was engrossed in a conversation with Kelly. We walked inside Matt and Kelly still talking as I followed behind them like a little lost puppy.
"The Severide Twins?" Trudy asked looking up from her papers
"Randall said you two were reunited but I didn't believe him" She said walking out from behind her desk and wrapping me in a hug without giving me a chance to even move away
"Morning Trudy" I smiled, sending a look to Matt and Kelly to be rescued but they just shook their heads. Trudy quickly rushed back behind her desk as to not be seen with emotions
"Now how can I help you lovely lovely people?" She asked
"Voight needed help on a case and Jamie's just tagging along"
"I'll walk you up" She said walking over to the gate. How I miss the days of Trudy having nicknames for everyone. We followed trudy up the stairs
"Voight" She said and he walked out his office
"Jamie you're functioning?" Ruzek asked and I rolled my eyes
"Thanks Ruzek. I wasn't that drunk"
"Jamie Severide" Hank walked over giving me a hug
"Hey Hank. Good to see you" I smiled
"How long are you in town? Where's the little one?" He asked
"I'm in town for good and Alex is on a trip to the zoo" I replied and he nodded
"Okay listen up. You all know Severide and Casey. This is Jamie Severide. Severide's twin" Voight announced and I looked down. There is nothing more awkward than a group introduction
"Who's older?" Ruzek asked, now sitting on the edge of his desk. Kelly and I looked at Ruzek at the same time
"Kelly" We replied at the exact same time. My favourite party trick was being able to pull that off without even looking at Kelly
"Did you do that on purpose?" He asked
"No" We replied once again at the exact same time. We did. Twice. But what he doesn't know doesn't hurt him.
"Back to the case" Voight said and I looked at the board. His handwriting still sucks. I took it all in. Looks like they had a suspect so why was Kelly and Matt here?
"Jamie, you still got your gun licence?" He asked and I nodded
"Renew it every year" I nodded
"Catch" I looked up as his gruff voice said that and caught whatever he was throwing at me. I looked down at my hands. A badge. My old badge to be precise. But why did he keep it and not give it to another member of intelligence?
"I'm not great use, in heels" I shook my head and Kelly gave me a look. I knew he hated me doing all these dangerous jobs but I was indecisive back then but he knew when I was lying probably just by the tone of my voice.
"Now. Severides and Casey are our fire experts. If we find any accelerants or anything that may be used for a fire then you call them in. Halstead goes and gets Jamie a vest. Rip the name off" Jay got up walking away
"Our suspect, Leon Beck, has a record for both arson and aggravated assault. To make things equal and safe Jamie is going to enter the property with us" I looked at him still shaking my head
"Let's move to the basement" I followed Hank down to the basement looking at Kelly who was smirking a little. He was enjoying this. He was enjoying me not being able to argue back to him or Voight. I rolled my eyes
"Voight I don't have a gun" I said and he nodded
"Still got your shot?" He asked and I nodded
"Never missed" I replied as we stood around in a circle Jay handing me a vest as everyone else was putting theirs on.
"I'll go grab your jacket," Kelly said, kissing my head before walking out. I pulled the vest on
"You're one of those people" Jay said shaking his head and I frowned
"What do you mean?" I asked as he tightened the vest
"Vest then jacket?" I rolled my eyes
"Let me guess. Jacket then vest?" I asked and he nodded
"Only way" I shook my head
"What do you do if you get too hot then?" I asked
"Suffer?" He frowned
"Thigh or hip holster?" Voight asked interrupting our disagreement
"Thigh all the time" I nodded and he gave one
"Some things never change" I saw a smile creep onto his face but I'll never admit that as I put it on
"Gun" Ruzek handed me a basic glock and I put it into the holster. Kelly handed me my jacket and I squeezed it under the vest with a smirk. I was just annoying Jay about putting it on top. I just liked to do things the complicated way
"We're not going this the correct way but as long as this guy is off my streets I don't care" Voight said. He never cared but I'll skip past that for the moment
"Severide and Ruzek, Atwater and Casey, Halstead and Upton. Severide and Casey number twos meet us there" I chuckled at their faces from being called number two. Kelly handed them a slip of paper and Kelly glared at me. I got into Ruzeks car and looked out the window as he drove. When he parked the car I got out walking over to Voight
"Severide, Atwater, Casey take the back, everyone else take the front" I nodded to Kelly to let him know that I was okay as we walked around to the back
"You're brave" Amaile said and I nodded
"Trust me there's nothing I want less right now" Amaile chuckled
"On my count 1...2...3..." Atwater kicked the door down and we all rushed inside
"Chicago PD" I shouted clearing the rooms
"Clear" I called as I nodded to Jay who was standing at the bottom of the stairs. I followed him up
"Chicago PD stay where you are" Jay shouted walking into a room as I cleared the other rooms
"Clear" I called walking back to Jay. The man was previously counting all his money but he wasn't our suspect
"Suspect in custody" Voight said through the two way as Jay and I walked downstairs with the other guy
"Voight he was counting money" I told him
"Atwater take him to custody. Upton, Halstead go bag upstairs. Casey and Ruzek go downstairs with the Twins and Casey" We walked downstairs Kelly and I whistled at the sign of all the arson related stuff he had in his basement, starters, accelerants, newspaper cutouts of the victims, pictures of the victims this guy was not right in the head. We soon walked back upstairs and I got in the car with Ruzek
"So didn't know you were a detective" He said and I nodded
"I was indecisive. Joined the fire academy then the police academy, got shot, promoted because I got shot and here I am" I nodded taking the holster off as he parked the car
"Quite cool though" I shrugged
"Can be" we walked inside and I gave everything back to Ruzek before walking upstairs to the bullpen. It was just Hank in there for the moment
"Jamie, thank you for today" He said and I nodded giving him the badge back
"It's okay" I smiled
"Keep it" He said and I shook my head
"Hank, I loved being a detective but I'm happy as a firefighter and I've got Alex to think about now"
"You said the first part once before and you were a great detective Alex" He said sitting on the edge of his desk and I sighed
"Like I said. I've got Alex to think about"
"Take weekends off, work when we need you on scenes unless you desperately want to come in" I looked at him. He wasn't going to give up and I did miss it. I can't deny that
"I'll think about it"
"That's all I ask" He nodded and I put the badge in my pocket.
"If you decide to say yes I'll get everything personalised" I chuckled a little with a nod
"Okay"
"Thank you again for today Jamie" I nodded walking downstairs and meeting Matt and Kelly
"Cindy called. She's going to drop Alex off on her way home but she's almost asleep anyway so you won't have to deal with her" I chuckled a slight bit. A quiet home sounds good. Matt and Kelly dropped me at home. Kelly going to see Elouise so Matt stayed with me
"So what are you hiding?" He asked and I looked at him confused as I handed him a beer
"What do you mean?" I asked
"You've had your hand in your pocket since we left the district"
"Hank offered me a job. My days of and not working weekends" I said and he nodded slightly. I took the badge out my pocket and placed it on the coffee table
"Told me to keep it until I made my mind up"
"Go with what you want. If you want to work two jobs like most of us do, then do that but remember you've got to make time for Alex which means the weekend is perfect for when you get Alex enrolled in a school" I nodded. He made a good point. Many firefighters do have jobs on the side and it'll be lonely come July when I have to send Alex to school during the day
"How do you always know what to say?" I asked to get up as there was a knock on the door. I opened it to Herrmann
"Hey mini Severide. Brought mini mini Severide up" He smiled. Alex was asleep in his arms thumb in mouth. I thought I had stopped that
"Thank you so much Herrmann. Will you thank your wife for me?" I asked taking her
"Of course I will. She said that if you ever need a babysitter just let her know and she'll do it. Alex was perfect" I smiled
"Thank you again Herrmann" I shut the door walking to Alex's room and lay her down in her bed. I took her shoes off before tucking her in. I didn't want to wake her. I grabbed her bag from the front door where Herrmann had placed it and put it on the kitchen counter. I sat down next to Matt again
"I should head back home" Matt said finishing his beer and I nodded
"Okay. Do you mind getting Cindy to watch Alex again? Tell her I'll pay here as well" I said and he nodded
"Okay. Remember to set your alarm, to get sleep and I'll pick you up in the morning okay?" He asked kissing my head and I nodded
"I will. I'm going to order some dinner" I smile and he nodded
"I'll see you later" He said walking out and I did just that. I ordered a chinese takeaway and had a couple more beers before getting changed for bed and getting into my cold bed. I very much wished Matt had stayed with me for the night mainly so I could take his body heat but he was already at home and it was too late for me to ask him to come back now. I soon fell asleep after a long while of scrolling on my phone
