Prologue
When we're younger, our teachers in school would ask us what we want to be when we got older. I remember sitting in that classroom knowing who I wanted to be when I got older. I watched as one by one my classmates said what they wanted to be, some wanted to be a doctor, a firefighter, a dancer. But when I stood up, I said what I wanted to study the human mind. Why did people kill? Why did people see things that weren't there, why they go mad? I wanted to know, I wanted to see. To me, the mind is a mystery that can never be solved. Maybe... Maybe that's why I fell in love with her.
Because her mind was broken.

"No way Jack, you are wrong." I hear my partner Cash say to me as we were running on the track, getting ready for our next exam. "How can I be wrong? Margot Robbie is hotter then Jennifer Lawrence sorry man." I say with a laugh. In two weeks, we'd be taking our finally exam, in two weeks, we'd finally graduate from the Bureau and be Special Agent Carter and Special Agent Dream. We've both been dreaming of this day since we were kids, he was the only one in my class who didn't think I was crazy. But the only difference was I wanted to work at the BAU, The behavioral Analysis Unit while Cash wanted to go to the FBI, he wanted to be a sniper but I didn't want that. I knew how to use a gun, I was good at it but... I was still better with the human mind, how people worked. I was always drawn to the human mind, knowing that someone could be perfectly find but a second later could snap without knowing why.
"God you're the worse, Jennifer Lawrence placed Katniss Everdeen, the girl on fire!" "And Robbie is Harley Quinn, you can't beat that psycho." I say with a laugh. "Of course you'd say... That." He says as he starts to slow downing making me slow down with him. "You know Cash, I don't know how you gotten this far, you're so lazy, and you hate running." I say as I slap him on the back. "I take offense to that!" He says finally catching his breath. "I don't know why you find psychopaths so attractive Jack." He says as we start to walk. "I don't find psychopaths attractive... Just their minds." I say pointing to my own head. "You sure you don't find psychopaths attractive? Hasn't Sally been seeing a psychologist for the past few months?" He ask and I felt my blood boil making me stop.
"You know that already Cash, she is your sister." I say as I start to run again, needing to burn off this anger. "Hey! Jack!" I hear Cash behind me just making me run harder. I could already feel myself start to calm down, I liked running. I liked feeling the cold wind hit my face and moving through my snow blonde hair. It was relaxing. But it also reminded me why I was here, why I was working so hard. I wanted this dream but... It would also help Sally. "Jack." I hear next to me opening my eyes to see Cash next to me. "Jack... I... Didn't..." I hear Cash trying to struggle the words out. I let out a chuckle, " I know you didn't." I say stopping again so I don't kill my best friend. I watch as Cash bends over to catch his breath.
"But Sally isn't a psycho Cash, she's just..." I start but I didn't know what to say to him. He knows about Sally's problem, their siblings. But Sally's problem just started about four months ago. Sally and I started dating two years ago but we've known each other for years, we grow up together. Her and Cash lived next door to my family. Everything was fine but when we started but then... Then the nightmares started. They just gotten worse and worse over the months that now... She won't sleep.
So I did what I could and found someone who could help. Dr. James Connolly, a man I haven't meet in person yet but he seems to be helping Sally for the past two months and that's all that matters to me. But at the same time, I felt like she wasn't herself anymore either. Like what happened last night, it was like she was a different person. "Look, I know Sally is sick, but I was just trying to make a joke, I worry about her man." Cash says placing his hand on my shoulder. I sigh, "I know... It just, something happened last night." I say as he gives me a confused look, "What happened?" He ask. I move my fingers through my hair, "It was after I got home form the academy...

"Sally, I'm home." I yell as I close the door. God I was tried, today was hell but it just it was almost over. I take off my jacket and shoes trying to move slowly. Every bone in my body was sore and I felt like I was slowly dying. All I wanted to do was eat dinner and watch some Netflix with my girl. "Sally?" I call out again as I walk to the kitchen. I was hoping to find her there cooking, she loves to cook and bake because she liked to have dinner ready for me when I got home. And Sally is an amazing cook, I could eat her food all day long if I could. But she wasn't there, and the kitchen was bare.
I raise an eyebrow, this was different, normally should would text me if she wanted take out or even a date. I decided to go to the next place I would find her at, her study. Sally wrote music for a living, and she loved it. So I built her a study so she could be as loud as she wanted without waking up the neighbors. Before I open her door, I turn on and off her light showing her I was there in case she couldn't hear me. "Sally you in there?" I ask as I finally open the door to feel my eyes widen. The study was destroyed. All her instruments were broken to pieces and her sheet music was all over the floor but the walls... The walls would give me nightmares alone. Write on all the walls was just one word, "Jump."
"What are you doing?" I hear behind me making me turn to see Sally standing behind me wearing sexy red lingerie outfit. I could feel my heart beat faster but at the same time, this wasn't the Sally I fell in love with, Sally didn't wear red, it was to bright for her, she would wear a light colors. "Sally..." I say taking a breath, "What happened? Why didn't you answer me when I came..." I start to say when I watch Sally walk more into the light to see her hair. Her once long brown hair was now chopped into a pixie cut and died red. I could tell she knew I noticed her hair as she giggles, "You like it? I wanted a change and I thought this would be a little sexier." She says throwing her arms around my waist as she gets on her tip toes to kiss my neck.
I grab her shoulder pushing her back, this wasn't the sweet girl next door I grow up with, the woman I fell in love with not long ago.
"I.. I do like it but I loved your long hair." I say as I move my finger through her short hair. "And why red? You don't like red." I say as she shrugs her shoulders, "I wanted a change. I don't want to be the sweet girl next door anymore. The one I was when we were kids, I want to be wild and free." She says grabbing my hand making me spin her. I couldn't help but smile, "Oh yeah? And where did this attitude come form?" I ask as she pulls me away from her study. I couldn't help but look back to still see those words even as we reached our room.
She pushes me into our room and close the door. "Dr. Connolly said I need to change everything, not just my hair but my personality too. To stop being so good." She says as she walks over to me and pushes me on the bed. "You know like Violet." She says. "Violet? Why are you thinking about Violet, we haven't talked to her in years, not since she moved." I asked as she crawls on me. "Because she was your first love." She says making me sigh, "Sally that was in high school... You got to get over that." I say as I sit up and touch her cheek, "And I like the old you, the sweet Sally I grow up with." I say. She slaps my hand away, "Violet grow up with us, and she wasn't all that fucken sweet." She says crossing her arms.
"Whoa, when did you start to curse?" I ask. Who the hell was this woman? "I told you I changed." She says again. "Yeah but cursing? Jesus Sally, you're a good girl, a good Christian girl who never misses church every Sunday and even makes me go even though you know I don't fully believe in that. But I go for you." I say. "So... You can be the bad boy but I have to stay the good Christian girl? I thought you liked bad girls like Violet." She adds crossing her arms. I move my hands over my face, "Christ Sally I like you! God you're acting like I've cheated on you with Violet and she's not even here!" I yell. I see her eyes widen as her arms dropped. Damn it, I wish I could take that back but I just didn't know what else to say. I push her off of me and stand up. "Where are you going?" She ask.
"To gets some air." I answer and walk out the door.

"I came back after a run around the block to find her asleep in bed already." I say as we reach the school again. "I don't know why she brought up Violet after all these years, and why she's acting like this." I say. "God I haven't even thought about Violet since I broke up with her." Cash says making me laugh, "Don't you mean when she broke up with you?" I say seeing a hurt look on his face, "That's just hurtful man." Cash says making me laugh but not for long. "Look Dream, maybe Dr. Connolly can talk to her, get her back to normal. She has an appointment with him today right?" He ask making me nod, "Yeah, she should be home the same time I am." "Well how about I grab us all dinner, it's been awhile." Cash ask making me nod, "That would be nice." I say as I look at him to see a worried look on his face, "You're worried now aren't you?" I ask. "I just... I agree with you. Sally would never cuss, I mean I think I heard her say 'damn' one time and she got really embarrassed and apologized a million times." He says.
"And her study... Why did she destroy it like that? And what do you think her writing 'Jump' means?" He ask and I shrugged my shoulder, "I don't know... I really don't." I was trying to think of a way to figure out what was going on in her head but I just... I couldn't get my mind there. "Maybe I should try and find a different doctor. I just feel like a Dr. Connolly seems like trouble." I say as we walk into our locker room to change.
I grab my jacket as Cash takes his brown hair out of a ponytail to see it fall to his shoulders. "You should get a hair cut." I say making shake his head, "Not until we graduate, bad luck man." He says making me smile. "But.. I agree with you, maybe a new doctor would be a good idea. Let's talk to her about it tonight at dinner. Okay?" I nod, "Yeah, thanks Cash." I say as I close my locker but hear my phone goes off. I look to see Sally's name pop up. "Sally?" I answer.
"Jackson, can you come home now?" She asks. Her voice seemed off, like she was speaking monotone. I look at Cash and put her on speaker, "What's wrong baby?" I ask as Cash looks at me, worried about his baby sister. "Just come home Jackson." She says as she hangs up. "That wasn't my sister." Cash says looking more worried. "I got to go, call the cops, something is wrong." I say as I start to run to my car.

As I get home I could already see three cop cars at my house making my heart beat faster, either they were close when Cash called or... Someone else called. I got out of my car the same time Cash parked his car as I go up to one of the police officers. "Excuse sir, what's going on?" I ask. "Sir, you have to stay back..." "Stay back? The hell I do, my girlfriend is there! This is my house!" I yell as the cop push me back gently. "Are you Jackson Dream?" He ask making me nod, "Yeah... Where's Sally?" Instead of answer he starts to walk to my house. "Your girlfriend called us about ten minutes ago." He says, that was about two five minutes after she called me. "She's on the roof, she won't talk to anyone but you." The cop say. I could feel my hands start to shake. I've learned to negotiate form the academy, it's part of my job to talk down anyone who wants to jump or to not shot. I was the highest one in my class who hasn't 'lost' someone but I never thought I'd have to negotiate Sally.
I locked my door and step in, it almost seemed like the place I was walking in, wasn't my home. It was dark, there was no lights were on and it was quite... It was to quite. Even the staircase looked longer, taller. I climbed up them though to the second story where I already found the stairs that lead to the attic was open. "Damn it Sally..." I whisper as climb up the stairs to feel the cold air hit my face. I already knew it was from the window with will have the ladder to take me to my girl.
It felt like a lifetime had past when I finally reach the roof to see Sally sitting on the side of the edge. She was wearing the white dress she wore on our first date, I would never forget that dress. "Sally." I say making her turn her head and I see a broken smile and make up running down her face from crying. But at the same time, it looked like she didn't really have emotion in her at all, like she was just a painted doll with that looks on her face. "I knew you'd come." She says turning her head back away from me. "Of course I came Sally. Why are you up here?" I ask. "You used to come here some time didn't you?" She ask making me stop moving. "Was it to get away from me?" She ask.
"Of course not." I say taking a step, I had to move slowly but fast at the same time. If I moved to fast, she might jump, if I don't move fast enough, she will jump. "Why don't you... Step away from the edge and let's go downstairs and talk. I'll make your favorite drink." I say taking another step, I was getting closer and she was still not looking at me. But I hear her laugh, "Do you want to know what my nightmares are?" Sally ask. She never told me what her nightmare were about, she either didn't remember or was to scared to talk abut them. "I would be up here... Looking over the city, seeing the lights. But... It would feel so empty, like nothing mattered." She starts and I can see her hands shaking. "I was so alone... And cold... So.. I stood up." She says as she starts to stand making me more nervous as I take another step.
"And I would jump." She says turning to me making me freeze, I was close if I jumped, I could grab her and pull her off but I had to be quick and wait. "Sally... Please come down, you are not alone. You have me, Cash and your family." I say making her eyes widen, "Cash... Is Cash here?" She ask making me nod, "He is... And he is worried sick." I add. She turns her head and looks down at the ground. "All those people down there... They are worried for you Sally, they want you to come with me." I say. She looks back at me tears falling form her eyes again.
"Do you love me Jack?" She ask taking me by surprise as I take a step to her, "Yes. I love you Sally. I love you so much." I say as I watched her eyes, her brown/hazy eyes glaze over. "He made me do it Jack." Sally says as she opens her eyes and falls back. "Sally!" I scream as I jump at her only to touch her dress, just missing her. I felt my hand and body hit the roof top before I hear a crash and a car alarm going off. "Sally! No!" I hear knowing it was Cash crying for his sister. I didn't know if I wanted to get up, because if I saw her body... I would know it was real, and this can't be real.
But I felt my body get up as I walked over to the edge of the roof and look down. Laying on the hood of a car, was Sally with glass in her hair, blood on her perfect face and a look of no emotion on her face but her eyes were open and they were just looking at me. I felt my knees give out as I fall to them feeling all the emotion she didn't feel. Sadness, anger, pain and the words she said to me echoing in my head. He made me do it Jack. I hear making my hand go into a fist as I hit the roof and scream.
People dream about being doctors or firefighters. My dream is to figure out what that meant, who made her do it and maybe... Just maybe help the next person who minds breaks.
