A few weeks later

Intelligence had caught the guy as the address Maddie had given them, Jay had IDed them as the guys driving and they went to prison.

Maddie did some digging and found out they worked with the human traffickers she had helped arrest a while ago so the information once again got passed up to the FBI who said the investigation was still open and most likely would last a while so she should still be careful.

Jay had been cleared to go back to work almost a week ago but Will was still being cautious about Maddie and didn't want her to go back to school, something Jay was okay about.

Becca was still bringing her school work over everyday so that she didn't fall behind but Maddie was bored of staring at the same four walls so she decided to go to the district. She didn't want to bother anyone so after throwing her laptop into her bag along with her work she put a coat on top of her leggings and hoodie before grabbing her bus pass, locking the apartment and heading down to the bus stop.

----------

Maddie was sat on her usual seat in the back corner of the bus, it was about half eleven so the bus was pretty empty, aside from her and the driver there was four other people, a mother with her young child, an elderly man and a guy in his twenties.

The familiar sound of breaks screeching filled the air and made Maddie freeze as memories of the car crash flooded her mind.

"Miss! Miss! Are you okay?" Maddie snapped alert to see the mother shouting to her.

"Yeah, I'm good." Maddie said, standing up and throwing her bag onto her back. "Get your kid out of here, go sit on the curb." Maddie ordered, something inside of her kicking into action. "Hey, are you okay?" Maddie asked as she moved towards the front of the bus.

"I think so." The old man replied, attempting to stand up but failing as his legs were too shaky.

"Stay there until the firefighters come, they'll help you to an ambulance." Maddie said as the other passenger caught her eye. He looked as white as a sheet and his jeans were stained red with blood. "Hey sir, can you hear me?" She said, crouching next to him. When she didn't get a reply she remembered how to take someone's pulse from her gym class and pressed her fingers into his neck until she felt a steady beat. "Hang in there." Maddie said, looking at his leg and seeing the white of bone.

Maddie had never been squeamish but she also had no medical training outside of a basic knowledge of the human anatomy and a few first aid classes she had taken at school. She pushed down on the injury in an attempt to stop the bleeding but she could feel the blood pumping out between her fingers.

If her knowledge of the anatomy was right that meant the broken bone had probably hit the femoral artery. She took a breath before pushing her fingers into the hole in his leg and felt where the blood was coming from and pinched.

"Squad, take that car! Gallo get the bus driver, Mouch and Kidd you're with me." Casey ordered as he got into the bus. "Mouch." Casey said gesturing to the old guy as he spotted the couple slightly further up the bus.

"What's your name?" Kidd asked as she went to help Maddie off the bus.

"Maddie, I need to stay." Maddie said, not moving.

"What's your boyfriends name?" Kidd asked.

"He's not my boyfriend, I have no idea who he is." Maddie said. "Matt right?" Maddie said, spotting the Captain approaching them.

"Do I know you?" Casey asked trying to remember where he recognised the kid from.

"You pulled me out a car crash a few weeks ago, Jay Halstead's kid." Maddie said.

"I remember you, but you need to get out of here." Casey said.

"I can't, I'm pretty sure I'm the only thing keeping him alive right now." Maddie said.

"Brett!" Casey called, in seconds the paramedic was by Maddie's side, checking over the guy.

"Can you keep your hand there for me?" Brett asked.

"Yep." Maddie said.

"I'll call Jay." Casey said as Brett tied a tourniquet above Maddie's hand.

"Please don't he'll kill me." Maddie said as Brett told her to slowly remove her hand but to stop if she felt any blood.

"We can drop you off at the district?" Casey offered as he helped Maddie off the bus after the guy.

"That would be great thanks." Maddie said.

"You'd rather face Platt than Halstead?" Kidd asked as she quickly checked Maddie over as the other paramedics were busy.

"Trudy's a great woman." Mouch commented.

"Mouch right?" Maddie asked. "Jay's more overprotective." She said, answering Kidd's question.

"You should probably go to Med just in case, especially after your crash the other week." Kidd said.

"I'll be fine, Jay'll get Will to check me over later anyway." Maddie said.

Casey helped Maddie up into the truck where she sat in between Gallo and Mouch.

"You ever think about being a firefighter or paramedic when you're older?" Casey asked.

"I think I'm gonna be a cop." Maddie said.

"Another one stolen from us." Mouch joked.

"I'll keep it in mind though." Maddie said.

"If you ever want to come to 51 for a day, our doors are always open." Casey said.

"I might take you up on that one if they don't let me go back to school soon." Maddie said.

"I'll take her in Captain." Mouch offered as they pulled up outside of the 21st.

"Randall! What a nice surprise!" Platt said, coming around the desk, not seeing Maddie. "Maddie? Are you okay? What happened?" Platt asked, rushing to the kid, placing her hands on her arms and checking her over.

"I'm fine." Maddie promised.

"Go get cleaned up, I'll explain everything." Mouch said, placing a hand on Maddie's shoulder who looked at him with a smile.

"Then come back down here, you're staying here so I can keep an eye on you until someone comes back upstairs." Platt said. Maddie was going to protest but knew there was no point.

She ran up the stairs to the locker room and shut the door behind her. She walked over to Jay's locker and unlocked it easily as he had told her his combination a while back. She grabbed the only hoodie she could find which was his black one and slipped hers off. She caught a glimpse of herself in the mirror and saw the blood that stained her hands. She stood in front of the mirror scrubbing at her hands for what felt like hours before all the blood was gone, then she slipped Jay's hoodie on and picked up her bag before returning to the front desk where Platt was stood, looking very proud of her.

Platt enveloped the teen in an extremely rare hug.

"You did good kid, you did good." Platt said.

----------

"Dr Choi, trauma 3." Maggie ordered.

"Unknown male, early twenties, broken leg, major damage to the femoral artery." Foster reported. "His heart rate's low but steady, stats are stable."

"I've got him from here." Ethan said, wheeling the patient into the room.

"Can you get started on the paper work?" Brett asked, spotting Will in the ED.

"Yep." Foster said, also noticing the red haired doctor.

"Will!" Brett called, grabbing his attention.

"What can I do for you Sylvie?" Will asked as he read over a patients chart.

"Nothing. I just wanted to let you know that Maddie did good today." Brett said. "She's the reason that guy made it to the hospital."

"Wait, what happened? She's meant to be at home all day." Will asked.

"There was a bus crash, she was checked over on the scene but insisted she was fine and that you would check up on her later. Dr Choi's patient is an arterial bleed and broken leg, Maddie was pinching off the artery, saved his life." Brett explained. "Casey took her to the 21st."

"I'll swing by their place tonight and check up on her." Will said, surprised at Maddie's medical knowledge.
