SUMMARY
Emily Byers has already been through a lot in her young life. Suffering from abuse from her father and then witnessing her parents' nasty divorce as a small child left some lasting negative effects that she must work through.
When she is just twelve years old, her twin brother goes missing, leaving little to no clues as to what happened to him. As her mother, older brother, and her town's police chief go about trying to figure it all out in their own ways, Emily is left to do the same.
She joins forces with her twin's best friends, three boys she is very familiar with yet has had little to no connection with in a very long time. However, their shared worry for the boy who has vanished causes them to put their differences aside and stick together for his sake, eventually leading to Emily becoming a part of the group.
Together, the four pre-teens discover some sinister secrets about their town that they had previously thought was the stuff of science fiction. Because of this, even after the mystery of the youngest Byers boy's disappearance is solved, nothing is ever the same.
