For the pasted 2 weeks, Lucy started to feel better with everything going on. She had a group of new friends who understood what she's been through thanks to Mario, she's mastering her training and in four months it will be completed, and her boyfriend and her continued to grown with their relationship. Today was Mario and Lucina's 23rd birthday. Every year on this day, Lucina surprises Mario with a special breakfast. This year, she wanted it to be extra special. Yesterday after work, she went food shopping and work up before sunrise for his special surprise. She made an egg and cheese souffle, blackberry and mint scones, strawberry-peach crepes, cinnamon-bacon glazed donuts, a cranberry crumb cake with almonds and two chocolate chocolate chip milkshakes.
It was now 9 am (which is when the duo gets up on weekends) and Lucy heard Mario come out the bathroom dressed and awake.
"Morning big brother!" Lucy said with the biggest smile. "Happy Birthday!"
"Morning little sister!" He said back just as cheerful. "Happy Birthday!" He then noticed the table was elegantly with the most beautiful food set up for breakfast. "W-what's all of this?"
"I decided to go big this year! You truly deserve it!"
"H-how? W-when? W-what-?" He was speechless. It looked so beautiful. So beautiful that it made him really glad about the dream that she chose to follow. He knew she was talented and thought she was wasting it when she became a plumber. This made him believe she was going to go down in history."
"I did the shopping after work yesterday. I started the cooking hours ago. Now, are you ready to dig in?"
"You bet!"
The two of them started digging into their food. To Mario, he always loves his sister's cooking, but something was different this time. This was the best thing he had ever tasted. He felt every bit of love like the usual, but also felt extra.
"This is so good!" He complimented with his mouth stuffed.
"Aww, really? Thank you!"
As the two finished breakfast, Mario heard his phone ring. He got up and answered his phone.
"Hello? Oh, Peach! Hey! What's going on? Uh-huh. Oh, we'll be there soon! Love ya too. Bye." Mario then hung up the phone. He then turned back to his sister.
"What did she want?"
"She said she needed us to come to the castle as soon as possible."
"Did she say why?" Lucy asked confused.
"No...this seems kind of...odd."
"Well we should go now in case she's in trouble!"
"Right! Let's-a go!"
The duo dashed out the door and ran to the castle. As they did so, they decided to cut through toad town. When they did, it was completely deserted. They looked around, but not a single person was there. After looking for about five minutes, they ran the rest of the way to the castle. Mario and Lucy pilled out their wrench and got into position. The door opened and...
"SURPRISE!"
"Huh?"
"Happy Birthday Mario and Lucina!" Peach appeared from behind the crowd.
"Princess!"
"We were worried about you Peach!"
"I'm so sorry guys, but I couldn't spoil the surprise!" Peach pulled out two boxes and handed one to each twin. "Open them!"
Mario and Lucy shared a look before tearing off the wrapping paper. Lucy gasped.
"Whoa! I've always wanted one of these!" Mario pulled out a portable drain auger. "Oh, this bad boy's gonna work in my favor!""
"Wow!" was all Lucina could say. She felt this was the best gift she ever received. She pulled it out of the box to see it closer. It was a custom made spatula with 'Lucina' in cursive carved into it. "I-I...love it!" Lucy's eyes started to water.
"Aww! I'm glad you like it!" Peach replied. "I heard about how well training is going, congratulations! Now, let's party!" In seconds, the music was cranked up. The toads all crowded around Mario.
"Whoa! Easy there guys!" Mario tried to calm them, but they came at him with questions.
"Mario, is that your sister?"
"Mario, I thought you had a brother!"
"Mario, why did you let him change his body?"
"Mario, don't you hate him for this?"
The last question made him mad. He took a breath and looked them all in the eyes.
"I could never hate her! She was never happy with herself until this transition. She's finally happy and others decided to ridicule her! She's always there for other people, but when she needed it nobody was there for her. People abandoned her. I...abandoned her. I'm doing everything I can to make up for it! If anything...she should hate me!"
The toads were all silent. They didn't expect their hero to fall apart like that. The felt sorry for making him uncomfortable.
"Another thing..."
The toads all looked back at the hero in red.
"It's she and her. She's a she, not a he. If nobody can accept that, then that's their problem." Mario then looked over at his sister. She was smiling and laughing with friends. "Some call it weird, but I call it a miracle."
Lucy was with her group of new friends and having fun. Nancy (her trans friend) then handed her a gift.
"I wanted to give it sooner, but then it would have spoiled things. Happy birthday!"
"Thank you." Lucy then opened the gift and gasped in excitement. It was a new purple dress.
"It's beautiful! Thank you so much Nancy! I'm gonna go put it on now!" Lucy hugged Nancy before rushing off the the restroom to put her dress on. Right after Lucy left, Bowser walked to her friends.
"Sorry to bother you, but have you seen Lucy anywhere?" He asked them.
"She went to the restroom to try on her dress." Connie answered.
"Thank you." Bowser thanked before walking off.
"Is that her boyfriend?" Connie whispered to Olive.
"He sure is! Cute couple!"
Lucy came out the restroom in her new dress and hair in a high ponytail. She looked around for five minutes before bumping into...
"Bowser!"
"My love, don't you look beautiful today!"
"You're very sweet."
"May I have this dance, gorgeous?"
"Yes you may!" She grabbed his hand and lead him to the dance floor. Bowser placed his hand on her waist and grabbed her other as Lucy put her hand on his shoulder. Then, their song played.
The love they felt was real. It was her dream, and his everything.
"Lucy...I-I have something for you." Bowser pulled out a small box and handed it to her. She opened it, and didn't know what to say. "We are still young, and you have a dream you're working for. So, I will wait as long as it takes, but I wanted to give you something that symbolizes my love for you!" It was the most beautiful thing she had ever seen. It was...
...a promise ring
"I hope that one day, you and I could become something more. I promise to love you, for the rest of our lives."
"And I...promise to love you!" Lucy responded, unable to hold back her tears. Bowser proceeded to hold Lucy close. Lucy felt so lucky to have him in her life. She never thought she could ever be so happy and find love.
Mario was watching his sister and her lover. Then, he started to feel something...it was...uncertainty.
"What's the matter, hun?"
"Oh, Rosalina!"
"Not enjoying the party?"
"It's not that."
"Lucy and Bowser?"
"Yeah. I still don't trust him."
"Mario, you worry too much! Lucina is a strong young lady. She'll be fine. Just have some faith in her."
"You're right. I guess at this point all I can do is support the decisions she makes."
"You know, the two of them together never would have happened if it wasn't for you."
"What do you mean?"
"..."
"Rosalina?"
"I didn't tell you yet?"
"Tell me what?"
"Well...Lucy's wish..."
"What about my wish?"
"Oh, Lucina! I didn't see you there hun!"
"Rosie, what about my wish?"
"Well...your wish...it...didn't come exactly true..."
Mario and Lucy looked at each other and busted out into laughter.
"Guys, I'm serious!"
"Her wish didn't come true?"
"Then, how am I a girl?"
"Because it was someone else's wish!"
The twins then stopped laughing.
"What do you mean?" At this point Lucy was confused.
"Who's wish was it?" Mario wanted the truth.
"It was yours, Mario."
"Huh?!"
"Mario's?"
"Yes. The wish was given to the one of those with the purest heart. Many people qualified, but it was given to Mario because...his wish was for someone he loves."
"Lucy...my wish...was for you to be happy. I truly believed your gender reassignment would do that."
"..."
"Sis?"
"Why would you waste your wish on me?"
"It wasn't a waste." He then placed a hand on his sister's cheek. "You mean more to me than anything in the world. I wasn't exactly the best brother before your transition. Once I saw the pain you went through on a daily basis, it hit me. Maybe I could make things up to you."
Lucy pulled Mario into a hug. She started to tear up and shiver. Mario started to rub her back to sooth her.
