Chapter Four:
"I Just Wanted My Gum."
.・。.・゜✭・.・✫・゜・。.

Heather listened to the ringing of the bell as she entered Mr. Keene's pharmacy. She had one goal and one goal only.

Get her bubble gum.

Anything other than that? An unwanted distraction. She was not in the mood to deal with anyone today. Especially not Greta Keene's toxic ass.

Unfortunately, fate had different plans in mind for her day, and her summer.

Heather walked over to the candy aisle, her hazel eyes scanning across the variety of gum packets.

Her fingers grazed the packages as she read, waiting to find her usual pack.

"Stupid Mr. Keene.. always fuckin' rearranging.. how many damn times can you change up the gum boxes?" She muttered to herself, getting increasingly annoyed at her inability to find the package.  "Unbelievable. Just want some damn gum."

Seconds later, her eyes landed on the pick packaging. "Finally."

She left the aisle and began walking to the register. "Oh, hey, Beverly Marsh."

"Heather Scott." Beverly greeted, obviously nervous due to the aisle she was in. "How are you?"

"I'm good.. and you obviously aren't. Here, I'll help. Hold this." Heather spoke quickly, handing the pack of gum to Beverly.

Her eyes scanned the boxes of pads and tampons before she reached forward and grabbed a box. "Here. These are what I started with, so, you're good."

Beverly thanked her with a smile, "Cool. Thanks, Heather."

Heather nodded, continuing to talk with Beverly as they passed the next aisle, avoiding Greta Keene.

"Oh, hey, Bill." Heather greeted with a small wave. "Stan, Eddie-"

"Ouch! What about me, sexy face? I thought we had a connection!" Richie wailed, waving his hands in the air. Heather rolled her eyes and rose her middle finger towards the boy.

"What-What's wrong with you?" Bill stuttered out, his focus on Beverly.

"Nothing! What's... wrong with you?" She said slowly, glancing briefly at Heather for assistance, but she didn't get a response. Heather was already busy in a conversation with Stan.

"None of your business!" Stan paused his talk with Heather to speak.

"There's a kid outside.. looks like someone murdered him."

"Holy shit, I bet it was Bowers and his gang of psychos." Heather scoffed.

"Is that what all this.." Heather picked up a box from Eddie's arms before dropping it back onto the pile, "is for?"

"W-W-We don't have enough m-m-m-mo-mon-money.." Bill explained, his eyes trailing to Heather for a split second.

A smile crept onto Beverly's face as she nudged Heather. "We can help."

Heather squinted at Beverly, but stayed silent. Beverly briefly explained her plan to the boys, and Heather, before they both walked up to the register.

"I like your glasses Mr. Keene." Beverly flirted, "You look just like Clarke Kent."

Heather swallowed the vomit, "They really do bring out your.. your eyes.."

Mr. Keene smirked at the girls, winking at Heather as he leaned towards Beverly.

"May I try them?"

Mr. Keene licked his lips before slipping off the glasses and handing him to the redheaded girl.

Heather felt her eye twitch at this. If there was one thing Heather hated more than Greta Keene, it was her dad.

And here she was. Flirting with the man so some probably dumb boys could help a random kid out.

Heather didn't see her day going like this. No, no. She saw her day going easily.

She'd get her gum, avoiding Greta Keene and Henry Bowers, and ride to the park.

She'd swing on the swings while blowing bubbles with her gum. The wind would be rushing through her hair and hitting her face. It would dry out her eyes.

She'd sit at the bay, watching as the waves crash against the shore, wishing she was anywhere but this stupid town wasting her life away.

Maybe she'd be in New York City or Los Angeles or San Francisco or maybe even Seattle. Maybe even somewhere abroad like Greece or Japan or Italy.

She'd imagine herself living her life day to day. Sitting on her balcony, watching the sun rise.

But, no.

Here she was, walking out of the pharmacy and towards a group of loud boys who didn't know how to steal without the help of someone else. Which, Heather guessed, was probably actually a good thing.

"Th-Tha-Thanks, Guys." Bill stuttered out, glancing between the two of them. "O-Oh, uh, he-here."

He tried to hand the girls the money he had. Beverly smiled, raising her stolen cigarettes, "Even Steven."

"He-Heh.. uh, yeah." Bill raised his hand to scratch the back of his neck. He was about to say something else, but Richie's voice interrupted him.

"Suck the wound!"

"Suck the wha-"

"Ben from soc?" Beverly rose a brow, smiling as she quickly went to greet the boy.

"That-Tha-Thanks again, re-really. You didn't ha-ha-ha-have to do that.." Bill awkwardly said looking away from her to the buildings across the street.

To be frank, Heather intimidated Bill. And the nervousness only increased after he saw how angry she could get.

"Chill, it's no big deal, really. But we gotta teach you how to steal without getting caught." Heather nudged his shoulder, following him down to his friends. "I mean, I've only done it, like.. twice.. but I didn't get caught either time. So.."

Bill smiled, rolling his eyes jokingly.

"Hezza!" Richie shouted, "Come back for seconds?"

"Gross. In your dreams." Heather shook her head, crossing her arms as she leaned against the nearby wall to watch Eddie clean Ben up.

"Hell yeah in my dreams. My wet dreams. My very wet dreams." He winked, pushing up his glasses.

"Sh-Sh-Sh-Shut the fuck up, R-R-R-Ri-Richie." Bill scoffed, shaking his head.

"Woah, okay, sensitive today, huh?"

Heather rolled her eyes, deciding to stay silent.

"Thanks, again, B-Be-Beverly."

"Sure! Maybe I'll see you around? Oh, and thanks, Heather."

"Yeah! W-We were thinking of going to the q-q-quarry tomorrow.. if you wanted to go? Y-Yo-You too, Heather."

"Good to know, thanks. Heather? You wanna walk with me?"

Heather's lips turned off as she pushed herself off of the wall, "I'll be there."

Bill smiled as Heather waved goodbye to the group. Even if it was to all five of them, he couldn't help but feel that she was waving to him.
