A striking combination of blue and pink streaked with violet took its place in the sky. A bright yellow sun was setting just below the horizon. Despite the busy streets, the view was beautiful. Especially from a rooftop.
Too bad. This'll be the last time I see this...
A skinny girl of about 15 was sitting on a concrete rooftop, listening to the sounds of vehicles and people below. Signs of depression and anorexia rested on her frail figure: Her cheeks were hollow and sunken, her skin and hair was brittle. Cuts and bruises were visible on her wrists and her eyes had a dull, emotionless look to them.
From below her, loud voices can be heard as well as crashes. Her parents were having an argument again. She closed her eyes, trying her very best not to cry. But even as she did her best, tears seeped out from underneath her eyelids. They fell down, leavind dark marks on the concrete. She grabbed her headphones and put it on, trying to drown out the sound of shrieks and screams. She stood up. As she did, "Breathe" by Lee Hi started to play.
"Take a breath and let it go, until your heart feels numb, until everything... is falling apart and hurting within..."
She made her way towards the edge of the rooftop, allowing the wind to run its fingers through her hair. Halfway, the song broke into its chorus.
"Whatever you've gone through, whoever you long for. No I don't know you. But I see hou you feel and I know, I'm here to hold you... so let me be the one who can comfort you. I'm here with you... take a breath and let it go..."
More tears rolled down her sunken cheeks as she stood at the edge of the rooftop. She stared at the busy streets of her hometown, wondering what would happen if she was gone.
Probably nothing. If anything, the world might be better without me.
The wind continued to caress her figure softly, as if to say "Don't do that. You have so much to live for."
But I have to. I don't want to feel the pain. I just want this to end. I just want to die.
The wind ceased slightly, making sure its touches were gentle. "I know. But the world may not be as bad as it is. There are people willing to help you–"
I know that. But I'm just... exhausted.
The wind's soft breath touched her face, drying her tears.
I'll just savor my last moments then...
She opened her eyes just as the brigde started.
"If no one cares, remember me. Those tired eyes won't ever bother me coz I already know... that your day wasn't easy so you can release it–the breath no one heard... don't think of anything else right now. Breathe the air surrounding you... take a breath and let it go..."
She looked at the streets below, about to jump off. She took a deep breath, then lunged forward, ready to end it all. But before she could, she felt the wins close its fingers around her wrists. She suddenly stopped mid-jump. She noticed how close she was to the edge. The wind wrapped its arms around her, then guided her back to the safety of the middle area of the rooftop. She felt her knees give up and collapsed to the concrete.
Why did you stop me?
The wind wrapped its arms around her tighter. "I don't want you to end your life. Don't be like me. Continie and live your life with your head held high, ok?"
"Just know I believe... in you..."
The last notes of the song faded away, leaving her alone with the wind. Then, slowly, a smile crept up her face.
Ok.
The wind left her, leaving in its place a newfound will to live.
Smiling to herself, she stood up and made her way to her room below, where, thankfully, her parents had stopped arguing. She was ready to live a new life tomorrow.
Little did she know, the wind that had stopped her from commiting suicide was the spirit of her childhood friend.
