Alex walked down the street with a bouquet of flowers he had just bought at a nearby petrol station. He saw Joanna waiting at the corner they had discussed and smiled.
"Hey." He came up behind her and wrapped his arm with the flowers around her so she saw them first. She gasped and clasped the flowers in her hand.
"Thank you, Alex." She turned around and kissed him quickly. "Did you miss me?" He couldn't help but laugh.
"Since this morning?" He wondered but when she raised her eyebrows he realised she was serious. "Every second." He changed his answer. She smiled and wrapped her arms around him to give him another kiss.
"So what are we doing?" She wondered. He shrugged.
"I figured we could just talk or summat. Nothing too exhilarating, I'm a bit hungover." He replied honestly. She frowned slightly but shrugged.
"Okay. Do you wanna get coffee?" She asked. He nodded and threw his arm around her as they walked to a nearby coffee shop.
Alex ordered and paid for the drinks before bringing them over to the sofa that she had chosen to sit at. He put his arm around her and sipped his coffee. It was already starting to get dark outside.
"So, do you think Arctic Monkeys will go far?" She asked, batting her pretty eyelashes at him. He shrugged.
"Hope so. We're putting in enough practice and we've got a bunch of gigs coming up now that we've done one. I'm excited." He told her. She kissed his cheek, her breath smelled like coffee beans but he didn't mind.
"Written any more songs?" She followed up. He nodded. "Any about me?" She added. The answer to that, was no but Alex was afraid he would offend her if he said that.
"Maybe." He decided on and then watched her nervously. Letting out a sigh of relief when she giggled and kissed him in response.
"They better be good." She replied. Alex chuckled and sipped his coffee. "So how long have you and Matt been friends for?" She asked.
"Since before primary school. We've lived next door to each other since we were five. He's really my best friend." He sighed.
As the end of sixth form slowly approached Alex was slightly worried that him and Matt would be forced to go their separate ways. The band was a long shot but it could be the way to stay friends for their whole lives.
"That's so sweet. I wish I had a best friend like that." She smiled. Alex pulled a confused face.
"What about Luna or Kate?" He asked. Alex always thought that they were really close friends but the way she was looking at him made him think she had never thought of it.
"Well, they're my group but like they're both so obsessed with their own lives that I don't really think I could tell them my problems. I'm close with my sister, she's the one I talk to." Alex couldn't believe what he was hearing.
"Luna? Really?" He shifted his body, ready to defend if needed.
"Well, I guess because her and Brian's relationship is so one sided she's always consumed by that but I give her a break because of her dad." Alex didn't like Joanna very much when she was talking about Luna. He sat there awkwardly.
"Maybe if you spoke to her about your problems she would listen. She's helped me out before." He tried not to tell her she was wrong, he knew not to do that.
"How did you two even become friends?" she looked almost bitter. He cleared his throat and sipped his coffee.
"English. We sit next to each other." He answered simply. She nodded.
"Makes sense. You must be good at English since you write all those songs." Alex shrugged in response.
"I'm doing ok so far." She shuffled closer to him and smiled sweetly. He smiled back to her and kissed her quickly.
"Is it your favourite subject?" She asked.
"Music is." He answered quickly. "But inEnglish I met Luna and in Psychology I met Harry so I'm grateful for my other subjects." He shrugged.
"Ah, I like Harry." She smiled. "He's cool but not in the conventional way, you know?" Alex nodded because that's exactly how he saw Harry.
"Me and Matt went to a concert with him a Miles not long ago. It was truly the most fun I've ever had." He grinned at the memory. Joanna raised her eyebrows and placed her hand on his thigh.
"The most fun?" She questioned. Alex realised what she was suggesting and laughed.
"Did I say the most? I meant a close second." He grinned, she grinned back. Alex turned away and looked outside.
"Do you wanna walk around for a bit?" He asked. She nodded and they left the coffee shop hand in hand.
They walked down the high street, towards Sheffield city centre. There was a lot of people around, odd for a Sunday night. Alex saw a glow of lightly coming from near the centre and Joanna's gasp only confirmed what he had assumed.
"Oh my god it's fair week!" She squealed, running forwards and dragging Alex towards the lights. "We should come here next week with everyone."
"Yeah that would be fun." Alex agreed.
They did all the normal couple stuff that you do at fairs: going on rides, playing games and eating shitty food that's covered in grease. Alex didn't mind the cringe of it all since he managed to get off with her multiple times throughout.
"Was I your first time, Alex?" She asked as they were drinking hot chocolate on a bench in the middle of the fair. He wasn't expecting that question and it took him a moment not to choke on his drink.
"Well, yeah." He answered awkwardly. She smiled and gave him a firm kiss. "Was I yours?" He asked back.
"No. I shagged Jimmy Bates last year. Wasn't any good though." She spoke casually. Alex tried not to look affected because he had no right to not be okay with that. He just didn't know how to reply.
"I don't know Jimmy Bates." He decided on. Joanna saw his awkwardness and placed her hand in his hair.
"It's ok, Al. You were better." She grinned. He leant down and kissed her deeply. They sat getting off for a while before running out of breath. "I should probably get going. My parents will want me home." She smiled.
"I'll walk you home." He offered. She nodded and they stood up to leave.
It was freezing. Alex couldn't wait to get home, have a warm shower and jump into bed. He had had fun with Joanna but he couldn't feel his nose anymore.
His hands were too cold to hold hers so he wrapped them in his jumper and threw his arm around her shoulder for body warmth. It was dark and cold and uncomfortable to say the least.
They reached Joanna's house and she stopped outside the gate and leant against it. She pulled his coat so he flung towards her and pulled his neck down for a kiss.
"I'll see you tomorrow, yeah?" She asked. He nodded, kissing her quickly again.
"Looking forward to it." He smirked. She licked her lips and opened the gate, separating their bodies. Alex watched her walk up her steps and into her house, waiting until she was inside before making his own way home.
The first thing he did was call Matt as he made his way home.
"Y'alright mate? How was your date?" He asked. Alex grinned.
"Went well. We talked and went to the fair. It was class." He beamed. Matt let out a chuckle.
"Sounds good. What did you talk about?" He wondered.
"Friends, the band and other random stuff. She's alright y'know." He nodded as if he had just seen something decent.
"You on your way home now?" He asked.
"Yeah just walking down Hargrove now. She doesn't live too far away if I'm honest." He looked behind him to see how far he had walked.
"Ah cool. Everyone left not long after you did this morning so you didn't miss anything." Matt let him know.
"That's good. I think we're all gonna go to the fair next week. It was quite good today." He replied, shoving his other hand in his coat pocket to keep it warm.
"Ah that'll be class. Let's do it."
"Good. I'm just walking down the road now. I'll see you tomorrow, yeah?" He licked his chapped lips.
"Course mate. Have a good night." He replied before hanging up.
