Nearsightedness runs in the Germanic family.
Gilbert has it particularly bad though, since albinos are born with terrible vision.
He thinks glasses are unawesome, so he wears blue contacts in public. This is why somethimes we see him with purple eyes.
.......Ludwig, however, thinks the purple eyes look stupid and just sticks to regular contacts.
