CHAPTER TWO;
EASY LIES.

the dreadfully long football game was nearing the end of its fourth quarter.

having no interest in watching the final play of the game, el's eyes casually scanned the crowded bleachers only to land on mike. he was sat beside dustin, directly in front of the cheerleaders -- likely at candace's request.

el couldn't help but snicker at the irony of it all. she dated the quarterback, he dated the cheer captain. in any movie, it would be daniel and candace sneaking around, but her life was anything but a movie. if anything, it was more of a sleazy, mediocre romance novel.

she felt a forceful hand grabbing her arm. she looked to find that max had reached for her out of instinct, too enthralled in the sport to realize that el was in pain from her death grip. "you better throw that damn ball to him, you dick!" she shouted, going unheard to most due to the loud chants surrounding them in all directions. the student section was a loud, vile place on friday nights.

el's brows furrowed, "who?" she looked to the field to see the ball clasped in daniel's hands before he threw it to lucas.

again, max was very interested in the game and cheering on her boyfriend, "yes, that's my boyfriend, bitches!" el lightly laughed, shaking her head. she caught some girls a few rows ahead look back and glare. they caught el's eyes and quickly flashed fake smiles. she supposed that was a perk of dating daniel. people were kind of nicer, even if it was fake.

el smiled when the final buzzer sounded, ready to go. one thing of many things she hated about football games was how enthusiastic everyone else was. there were bleachers for a reason, yet all anyone wanted to do was stand the entire time. el's feet were really fucking sore.

max asked, "are you sure you can't come to jamie's party? i mean, it's not like your parents would even find out." el had formerly lied to her best friend, claiming that if her parents knew she went to a party when they were in another state, she'd be grounded.

el nodded. "max, my dad is the chief. trust me, he would find it." the lie was vague, but the ginger shrugged, accepting it.

"come on, let's go meet the guys," max clutched her best friends wrist, beginning to pull her down the stands. they pushed the crowds to the field gate where the team exited. el noted the redhead's excitement to greet her boyfriend, and she finds herself trying to mimic it.

minutes pass before the team began to leave the field, and she jumped when max screamed from beside her. she watched her fiery locks flash passed her as she runs to lucas.

"ellie," she heard the familiar voice of her boyfriend. she spun around the find him grinning widely at her. he didn't hesitate to wrap his right arm around her in a side hug, his left arm holding his helmet. "i'm going to go shower really quick, i'm gross. will you wait for me at my car?"

her mouth fell, really not wanting to stand beside his car for 20 minutes. "actually, i was just going to ride with max," she watched as his eyes seemed to narrow in disbelief. she silently sighed, "i'll just go tell her i'm riding with you, okay?"

instantly, his usual perfect smile coated his features once again. "i thought you would change your mind. i have to go, see you in, like, 10 minutes, 'kay?" she nodded and he jogged away, following the same route as the rest of his teammates.

the 10 minutes had passed..15 minutes ago. this is why she usually ride with max. he took forever to shower and get his things, most likely spending most of the time talking to his friends.

she blew her lips, leaning her back against the glass of the passenger window. her eyes were glued to her converse-covered feet as she pushed around a smooth, grey rock.

at the sound of a faint giggle, she looked over her shoulder to find a couple propped against a yellow volkswagen bug. she recognized the pitch black curls she'd threaded her own fingers through too many times to count.

she was sat on the hood of her car as he stood in front of her, holding her face in his hands. she couldn't help but grimace at the sight.

el and mike were adamant that whatever they had was strictly physical. no one had any reason to get hurt or hurt anyone else as long as feelings weren't involved.

and she held up her end. her attraction was purely physical. but candy beck is annoying, and she couldn't say she enjoyed the sight in front of her.

she averted her gaze, not wanting him to know she saw. that would be weird, her just watching them from about seven empty parking spots away. she looked back to her feet, hoping the rock could distract her from the shameless face-sucking occurring only yards away from her.

she exhaled deeply, wondering where the hell daniel was. she knew for a fact that the outrageously overpriced watch on his wrist worked perfectly well, yet he had no perception of time.

she reluctantly looked back up to the busy couple, and her breath caught in her throat. his mouth has against the cheer captain's, but his eyes were locked on el.

he was watching her while he kissed his girlfriend.

the girl against him was completely clueless to where his stare fixated as she continued kissing him. el's bottom lip wedged between her teeth, eager to go home. she wanted his lips on her own.

she was snapped from the intense eye contact when the vehicle her body was still slightly pressed against beeped, alerting that it was unlocked. she looked to the direction of the locker rooms to find daniel walking towards her, some smelly gym bag in his tow.

he beamed his perfect straight teeth to her, "sorry, i took a little longer than expected. i got caught up with my friends," he halfheartedly explained. his warm brown orbs flickered to the couple kissing on the bug car and grimaced.

el shrugged, "it's fine." it wasn't fine. her feet were killing her, and she waited for half an hour in a nearly empty student parking lot. "we should go, i'm kind of tired," she informed as they both got into the dark red 1988 corvette, a gift he received for his 16th birthday last year.

"tired? wait, you're not coming with me to the party?" he questioned, seeming to be irritated by the new information.

"daniel, my dad would kill me if he found out i went to a party when he's a state away. i cant risk the party getting busted and someone he works with seeing me there, i'd be dead," lying to daniel was as easy as telling the truth at this point.

he scoffed. "you're my girlfriend, el. i just won a big game against one of our rivals. do you know how i'm going to look showing up to a party alone?" she flinched at the raised volume of his voice.

she frowned, but she was too attached to her actual plans to forget about them. "i'm sorry. i really am, but i promise i'll go to the next one."

he revved the engine of his sports car with a sigh. "whatever." he sped out of the parking lot, but not before el could catch a glimpse as mike.

he had disentangled himself from the blonde, and was lighting a cigarette. she felt the heat within her, knowing she taste the smoke on his lips soon.

just not soon enough, it seemed.

/ / /

the car pulled to an abrupt stop just in front of her house.

"get out," he urged, not looking at her.

she huffed, "you're not actually upset that i'm not going to this party, are you? it's just a party, daniel!"

he shook his head, "i'm not in the mood to argue, not tonight." it'd become the norm for them lately. ever since el had become busy with other commitments, daniel's temper grew thin resulting in arguments. she tried to dismiss is because, technically, she's in the wrong. she's bringing it upon herself, but she knew tomorrow or monday, they'd be fine. he would be the cheeky and happy boy she fell for.

"okay," she conceded. her hand reached for his, not wanting him to leave angry, but she gasped when he hit her hand away. her brows furrowed as her mouth remained parted.

he threw his gaze to her fleetingly before inhaling deeply. "you should get inside if you're tired, el."

she nodded and exited the car. before closing the door she uttered to him, "drive safe, please."

he didn't reply. he didn't even look at her. his fingers flicked against his gearshift before he sped away from her, leaving her confused.

taking a deep breath, she walked towards her home, already fishing her keys out of her pocket. she shook away the thoughts of her and daniel's previous interaction, knowing they'd
be back to normal next time they saw each other.
