israel, turkey, armenia, georgia, azerbaijan aren't technically in europe but they're close enough to the continent so they're allowed to take part i guess. but australia takes part because they happen to be really big fans of the eurovision song contest (esc)???

it's actually true. Darude did represent finland this year
madonna performed as a guest this year and her vocals were uhhh. debatable. the 'european avengers' are the some of the most iconic former esc participants who came and performed together. Conchita Wurst is on the very left, and all five of them sang harmonically.
ukraine was not able to participate in the esc this year because the ukrainian representative, maruv, held concerts in russia but ukraine and russia have this war going on hence striking up large political controversy. a contract was given to maruv, something about her representing ukraine in the esc this year, and apparently it seemed to be threatening, and she had to do what is right so she did not sign it and did not come to the esc. which is sad because maruv's song Siren Song is actually pretty good, the music videos may be slightly sexual but ignore that, the song is great and could have scored high.
