A home.

A shelter.

A refuge.

It's a place you find yourself coming back to no matter where life takes you. It's the place where your family is waiting. It doesn't have to be related to you by pure blood, but rather the people who care for you. It's where the people you'd give up your life for dwell.

I didn't have the chance to have a home ever since I turned into a winger. Moving from place to place was just another routine I had to endure in my crazy life.

Until I returned to Heaven Bridge.

This town is where the warmth of a home has found me. It's where Liam and I were finally able to find a home. It's where I have found Max and Delilah who unintentionally broke into my life. And I was more than happy for that.

They have become the people I relied on to feel human again. They were the people who reminded me of my past life. And day after day, I fell in love with their company.

This town is where I finally had the chance to meet Sam. And it all developed into something I never expected to be born. He had made me appreciate being alive. Whenever I remember his smile, a tear slips.

And look where he ended up, a puppet under the control of one of the most vicious creatures alive.

Flashes of all the moments I was able to stare at his beauty creep back into me, from the moment we officially met in the classroom, to the second I had to watch them move him back to his house with an injured leg.

And poor Elisabeth.

Elisabeth Jones, the woman who gave up her freedom ever since she became a mother. The moment I crawled back into her life, she had lost her memory, her lover and her son.

I have been nothing but a pestilence thrown in their life. And I didn't even get the chance to complete the task behind my return.

Now I get to leave stripped from my freedom, my family and my home, only to turn into something I have always despised.

I stare into the empty road at the end of Heaven Bridge and inhale the cold air. My eyes have dried up for all the tears have been already shed.

I will miss you, I speak to my hometown.

I will miss staring at the sky and going on roof dates. I will miss waking up at home to see Liam making me coffee. I will miss secretly visiting Sam. I will miss helping Max get over his drugs problems. I will miss hanging out with Delilah and listening to her crazy gossip stories.

I will miss all of that without an exception.

The fact that I am leaving Heaven Bridge forever is shocking and almost unreal to me.

Sacrificing my life would be much of a clemency than to sacrifice my freedom. But no matter what happens I won't get Sam or Liam out of my mind. And I'll come back for them even if it took me years to do so.

"Are you ready to leave?" Alex asks me closing the trunk of his car.

He picked up my luggage from the sheriff's office after the taxi driver dropped them off. I l clear my throat before I suggest something he will totally disagree on.

"Can I do one more thing?" I ask him praying he'd have mercy enough to let me do what's on my mind.

"What?" he shoots me a glance as he's holding the driver's seat door handle.

"Can I see Sam for the last time?"

"Get in the car." He immediately snaps. He didn't even think for a second about my suggestion. Hayden will probably punish him for it.

"Come on Alex. I know you're cruel enough to forbid me from seeing him. But I won't be able to see him ever again. You have to let me do it." I pause for two seconds then suggest something he won't be able to pass on. "You can come with me to make sure I won't run."

For the first time I see him actually considering my offer. He finally nods.

"No more than two minutes."

I break a weak smile and spread my wings into the chilly air.

~

My angel.

Sam is sleeping still in the coma Alex and the rest of the black wingers put him in. He doesn't feel a thing, he is just deeply sleeping.

I smile and look from the corner of my eye at the road. I see Alex waiting for me crossing his arms, in the same position I'd always find him in.

The window isn't locked and it opens easily when I pull it up to enter. It's a good thing his bedroom is in the second floor of the house otherwise it would be dangerous especially for him to sleep with the windowsill open.

As I slip inside without a sound, I stare at his beauty.

I'll miss that.

I'll miss you.

I sit on the bed next to him and caress his forehead. My deep breath is ice cold. I am scared and lonely.

"You know when I first came here, I never expected something like that to happen." I speak in a barely audible voice. A tear that I didn't expect, slips and slides down his pale cheek. "I always thought I'd bring Amy back home without anything epic going on. But then I was able to interact with you. And I fell for you the moment I saw you in the classroom."

My giggles end with a sob.

"You wouldn't know what I felt when we danced together in the masquerade party. I saw your life flash before my eyes, and I felt each motion you did. We connected, and now I'm going somewhere no one will be adept enough to find me. I'm going to the hometown of Black Wingers. Ironic huh?

"I'm sorry, that I left you earlier. And I'm sorry I'm leaving you now. I shouldn't do that to you, after everything that we've been through. But it's for your own good. Trust me. I'd rather lose my freedom and keep your life than the opposite.

"I know I should be saying that I'd love to see you happy with another girl, and that you should completely forget about me in order to have a normal drama free life, but I don't want to lie to you.

"I want to be the only one for you Sam. You know why? Because I'm selfish when it comes to you."

My heart pounds quickly. I never thought I'd reach rock-bottom that I can't stop crying because Alex has the final control over my life.

"Because I can't get you out of my mind." I add in a low whisper.

I wipe away my tears quickly and stand up.

"Now I have to go. Otherwise, Alex is going to kill me." I take a deep breath then add in a lower voice. "I'll be back. I promise. I won't leave you again. Keep that in your sleepy mind."

I smile dimly and bend to kiss his cheek.

"Goodbye Sam."

Sam's POV:

I wake up at the sound of the wind whistling through the window. My head feels a thousand times heavier and my breathing is shallow.

Why is the room so cold?

My eyes drift lazily to the window and I see it open. The curtains are flying with the gentle breeze. Slowly, I climb out of bed and close the glass.

I check the clock. It's 2 a.m. When did I fall asleep? I don't remember anything that's happened ever since the fight with mother.

And what's with this killer headache?

As I make my way to the kitchen, I check on my mother. She's deeply asleep in her bed. Thank God, it's been almost a month since she last slept well, ever since the death of Liam.

Jules will never come back. I look down at the floor. I can't believe the first thing that comes to my mind as I wake up is her.

As I drift my eyes down, I notice I'm still my jeans and shirt. And they're pretty dirty.

What the hell?

A hole covered in blood on top of my left knee catches my attention. It's like my leg has been shot. I touch my visible skin but there's no wound there.

Have I been sleepwalking?

I rub my eyes and retrieve an Advil from the cupboard. It must be enough to calm down the pain.

As I return to my bedroom to take a quick shower and change, the air is caught in my lungs and I almost choke out the Advil I just took.

"Fucking hell you're dead." My knees feel a bit weak but I manage to stand still outside my bedroom door.

On my bed, sits the man I witnessed his corpse in the arms of my girl. It's the man whose death was the cause of her departure without a goodbye. It's the man whose funeral was almost a month ago.

"There's no time to explain. You need to get your shit together. Jules's in trouble." Liam says.

To be continued in Black Veil.
