Savannah Noel
The feeling of my mattress sinking down causes me to stir in my sleep.
"Sav, get up." A voice mumbles.
I make a small noise of protest and shift in bed, opening one guy to see who it is.
Liam.
Liam is actually in my room without me having to ask him first?
Confused, I move my eyes to the clock on my desk.
7:03AM.
"It's Saturday!" I complain.
"Come with me to breakfast." Liam says.
"But it's Saturday!"
"Please?" he asks. "Come with me. I miss you."
I huff, "well that's funny considering I've practically been the least important person in your life since Maria walked in," I practically spat her name.
He runs his fingers through his hair.
"Well I broke up with her. She was controlling," he says.
My eyes immediately narrow.
His eyes are shifty. Liam is always good with eye contact.
He's lying.
I open my mouth to call him out on his shit but end up closing it instead.
First of all, why does Liam feel he needs to lie to me of all people? Second of all, what does he mean? Maria is controlling? What did the bitch do?
That's my focus. What did she do to him?
I sit up, vaguely aware of Sofie sitting across the room.
"What did she do to you?" I ask, putting my hand on his back.
"She just didn't like when I wasn't with her." He shrugs.
I huff.
"Well I was here first," I begin, "and I'm way more important than she is." I pause. What if I'm not important to him anymore? Since he's barely seen me. I can't help it when I add the next part. "Right?"
Liam looks at me, holding eye contact. "Right."
Sofie snorts loudly and stands up, shaking her head.
"I literally can't watch this. It's hard to see and it physically hurts my mind." She opens the door to the dorm, walking out into the hall in her pajamas.
The door slams shut behind her, leaving me alone with Liam.
"What is she talking about?" I ask him.
"I don't know." He says. "Can you please get ready? I'm starving."
I rub my hands on my face and nod, putting my hand on his thigh as I hop down from my bed.
"I mean, what did she do?" I continue on about Maria. "Did she just, like, tell you that you're not allowed to see me anymore? God, what a bitch." I turn to him. "What's her room number? What residence hall is she in? I want to talk to her."
I can physically see his shoulders go down as he sighs. He rubs his temples, "please don't say anything to her. Please?"
I huff, pulling a pair of jeans out of my drawer.
"Fine. I won't say anything to her."
"Thank you."
I get out a pair of leggings to wear under my jeans, followed by a tank top and then a long sleeve shirt.
I grab a bra as well and turn to him.
"Turn around."
He flops down on my mattress with his face towards the wall.
I change my clothes, thinking about stupid controlling Maria and I brush my hair and walk to my closet, pulling out my winter coat.
I pull it on and lace up my boots.
"I'm ready," I tell him.
He hops down from the bed.
I grab my phone and room keys, walking out of the door with him right behind me.
He hits the button for the elevator and I glare at the floor.
"Did she let you see anybody else?" I wonder.
He sighs, "why are you so concerned with this?"
"Because." I mumble.
"Because why?" he asks.
"Because she took you away from me," I sigh. "And that makes me mad."
"So you're saying you missed me?" he grins.
I roll my eyes and step onto the elevator, punching him in the arm.
"Yes, jackass. I missed you."
"Awwww!" he coos, reaching out to ruffle my hair.
I catch his wrist before he can.
"If you ever want to have children, you better not mess up my hair."
"Oh please," he says. "You're not going to do anything."
"I might," I threaten.
The elevator opens on the first floor and I march out the doors.
He keeps up with me easily and I push the door to outside open and stop short.
It's snowing again, and there's more snow on the ground than last time.
"It's cold." I complain.
"I hope you're not surprised by that," he responds, gesturing to the snow covering the ground.
I roll my eyes at him and walk towards the café.
"We're not going there." He says.
I stop walking.
"Where are we going?"
"We're going to a real restaurant."
"Why?" I ask.
"Because I'm out of food points until Monday." He says. "Let's go." He points to the parking lot. "Can we take your car though? I need gas."
Shit! My car is broken!
Just say yes. Maybe it will start today.
"Sure." I shove my hands in the pocket of my jacket.
Car, if you don't fricken work with Liam, I'm going to kill you.
He walks with me to the parking lot and I unlock my Rav4.
The lights don't flash.
"That's weird." Liam says.
He doesn't sound very surprised.
Just go with it.
I unlock the drivers door with the key and lean over to unlock the passenger door.
He gets in the car and just watches me as I put the key in the ignition and turn it.
The engine sputters.
"Oh, what's it doing?" Liam asks.
"It's just cold." I mumble pathetically.
"No, your battery is dead, Savannah." He sighs. "When did this happen?"
I narrow my eyes at him.
"You already knew, didn't you?"
He shrugs in response and opens the glove compartment, sorting through it until he pulls out my car book thing.
He starts flipping through it, stopping on a page. I watch as he takes a picture of the page, flips the book closed, and puts it back in the glove compartment.
"That same birdie also told me you've been riding your bike to work." He says, shutting his car door.
I get out and shut mine, locking the car with the key.
He walks towards his truck and I scurry after him.
I feel my foot slip out from under me and I fall right to the ground.
"What happened?" he asks. His hands reach out, lifting me off the ground.
"I slipped on ice." I grumble, wiping the snow off my jeans.
"Are you okay?" he questions.
"I'm fine." I grumble.
He sighs.
"Why didn't you tell me your car was broken? When you close, you don't get off work until eleven. You should have told me your car was broken. It's freezing at night and you shouldn't be riding your bike alone off campus." He reprimands.
"Well every time I tried to contact you, you didn't answer the phone."
"I told you, Maria-"
"I don't care about Maria, Liam!" I exclaim. "I care about the fact that you let it go on for so long! You always say I'm your best friend and you love me, but if that's true, you would have put me before her. I thought you didn't care about me anymore. I thought my stupid parents were right. They said we would drift apart and I told them they were wrong. But, but then it actually started happening, and-" I shake my head. "You really hurt me, Liam. You really did."
I reach for the passenger side door handle of his truck, but he grabs my hand before I can.
"I'm sorry," He whispers. "I was an idiot and I'm sorry. I never wanted to hurt you. I promise I will never go anywhere ever again."
I look into his eyes for a few moments, and then I step forward and wrap my arms around his waist.
He wraps his arms around me and holds me tightly against him.
And I just...don't want to pull away.
