"So he just left without saying a word? That's the cruelest thing I can imagine."

"Well, actually, no. He did leave a note on our counter that said 'fuck you both. you ruined my life.' So, I guess he did say a couple words," I laugh humorlessly as I remember what my father did to my mother and I just a few short months ago.

"Well, God, I take it back. That is by far the cruelest thing I can think of," he smiles down at me and I can literally feel the sympathy in his eyes.

When I look up at him, I know I guessed correctly. His gorgeous, murky eyes hold sympathy in them, and while I would usually roll my eyes and get annoyed, I find his sympathy something I desire. I feel like maybe he could help me. And my mom, of course. She's the person I care about the most.

I have no idea how long I stare into his eyes before he speaks again.

"Adam," he whispers. I am just now realizing that our faces have gotten close enough to whisper without either of us noticing.

I scrunch my eyebrows at him. "What?"

"My name. It's Adam. That's why I laughed earlier. Adam and Eve? Like in the bible?" His eyes now shine with amusement. I find myself getting lost in them, for what feels like the millionth time today. I don't register what he is saying until he finally blinks and I am brought back to this earth.

"You're kidding me, right? Adam? This has got to be some kind of joke!" The volume of my voice increases greatly and I back away from him.

"Not a joke, Eve. It's fate!" He chuckles a little and reaches for my hand.

"Stay away from me!" I yell, and run away from him as fast as possible.

When I reach the corner, I realize I spent so long talking to Adam that I missed the bus. I think about calling my mom, but I remember that she has to work late tonight and I don't want to get in her way--again.

I sigh before beginning to walk towards my house. Today is just not my day.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As soon as I open the door to my home, I throw my backpack on the floor and head to the pantry. It's going to take a hell of a lot of Cheetos to get my mind off of everything happening right now.

Adam? Really? God must really hate me if he made the hottest boy to ever take any interest in me whatsoever have that name. I was just starting to like him, too! I trusted him with my family's secrets!

How could I have been so naïve? I should have been more suspicious when he refused to tell me his name when I asked. It's almost like he knew I was going to run away. Like he knew that I cannot stand clichés, and therefore cannot be with him.

This is crazy. What are the odds that I, Eve Norberry, would fall for a guy named Adam?

Not that I'm in love with him. I only just met him!

And I won't fall in love with him. That's not happening. Not after my parents. Romeo and Juliet? Really? You'd think they would know that considering they both die at the end of the fictional love story, the real life one probably wouldn't turn out so great, either.

I groan as I plop down on the couch and turn on the TV. Why bother giving this any more thought? I'm not putting myself through that. Or my mother. Especially my mother. I can't even imagine what she would think if history began to repeat itself? One badly ending love story to the next. I don't want her to worry. And, frankly, I don't want to worry either.

So that settles it. I smile to myself, a bit relieved, and dig into my Cheetos. Thank God I could clear my head before I developed any real feelings for this boy. This way, it's much easier to cut him out of my life. For everyone. This way, no one gets hurt.

I plop my head onto a throw pillow and begin browsing through channels. I'm looking forward to a relaxing night back in my old routine, especially after the day I've had. I need to get back to the way things were. I need to take care of my mother. No boy is worth giving up my routine for. Even a boy named Adam. Especially a boy named Adam.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A knock on the door makes me jerk my head away from Kim Kardashian and the drama that is her life. I glance at the clock. 9:00pm. Normally, my mother isn't home from her late shifts until at least 11, sometimes 11:30. Also, my mother has her own key. She would definitely just let herself in.

I quickly look around the house for something I could use as a weapon, if necessary. The only things I can find with this short of notice are my mother's golf clubs in the bag she left laying in the kitchen from her last outing. Without thinking, I jump up and grab one. Better safe than sorry, right?

I then proceed to tiptoe my way towards the front door. Looking through the peephole, I find someone extremely unexpected. Lowering my golf club, I open the door.

"Adam? What are you doing here?" I question as he eyes my weapon of choice.

"I think the question is why are you holding a golf club? Planning to beat me to death? Hate to break it to you, but that's a different bible story," he smirks at me. I look away to avoid getting lost in his stupidly gorgeous eyes again.

"What are you talking about, Adam?"

"Cain and Able? The brothers? One of them beat each other to death- I forget which one, though. Doesn't matter."

"You sure know you're bible stories," I point out.

He shrugs. "My parents are hardcore Catholics."

This causes me to quirk an eyebrow at him. "Your parents? What about you?"

"I have no idea. I'm still figuring who I am without the help of my parents," he states honestly.

Damn, I think. He's making me

A few moments go by before he speaks again.

"So, are you going to invite me in, or what?" He chuckles. It sounds beautiful, of course.

I move my body to block the door.

"How the hell did you find out where I live? I have only known you for a few hours, and I never even told you my last name. Are you a spy? Or maybe just a stalker? Do you have others that are coming soon to kidnap me? Are you going to rape me?"

"Woah, woah. Calm down, Eve. I followed you home from school in my car because I didn't want you walking home alone. I would have just offered you a ride, but I figured after the way you ran away earlier, you wouldn't accept."

"You thought right," I mumble.

He smiles down at me. I continue avoiding his eyes.

"I also happen to know that you are a bit scared and you are home alone until your mother comes home from work and I had nothing to do tonight. I thought maybe since you trusted me with your family secrets, I owed it to you to make sure you were safe. I don't know, it made sense at the time.

So, anyways, I left to get some dinner and then came back. And now I'm here. I thought about just staying in my car until your mom came home, but I got bored and I also have some questions for you. I figured now would be as good a time as any to find out why you ran away so fast when you heard my name. I hope that's okay?" He asks tentatively.

Finally, I peek up at his eyes. They hold hope, as well as a bit of protectiveness. I sigh. I'm going to regret this.

Moving away from the door, I motion for him to come in.

"You can stay. But only because I'm bored, too. And only until my mom comes home."

He grins at me, dimples popping and perfect teeth glimmering. "I'll take whatever I can get."
