I didn't know until I saw him. There's just something about him that drew me in. Maybe it was his dazzling brown eyes, or his infectious laugh, or the way he can leave a whole room of people speechless just by being in it. I just know there was something about Dan Howell that grabbed me from the start.
He and I are polar opposites. He's the popular jock and I'm the quiet emo who sits in the back. He's something, I'm nothing. And so my dreams of being with Dan will have to remain dreams.
Or so I thought.
One fateful day, the first day of senior year to be exact, when I was just sitting in science letting Patrick Stump's magical voice whisk me away from the cruel reality, I felt a tap on my shoulder. I looked up to see a familiar dimpled smile and mess of curls.
"Is this seat taken?" Spoke the beautiful voice of Dan Howell. At a loss for words, I simply shook my head no, to which Dan began to sit down. I tried to return to my music but it was hard when I could feel someone staring at me the whole time. I took out an earbud and turned to see Dan looking at me with his gorgeous brown eyes.
"I like your shirt." I look down and realize I'm wearing my favorite Muse t-shirt. Dan smiles thoughtfully. "That's my favorite band."
"Mine too!" I exclaim. Dan chuckles at my outburst and I shrink back in embarrassment.
"I can tell. What's your favorite song?"
"Sunburn."
"No way, me too!!" He says with a grin. We spend the whole rest of the block talking and laughing like old pals.
As the end of class nears Dan and I have settled into a comfortable silence, him scribbling something on a piece of paper and me lost in my own thoughts. I never imagined that he'd ever want to be near me, let alone have a full on conversation with me. It turns out we have more in common than I'd previously thought. We both like Muse, Fall Out Boy, Pokémon, Mario Kart, and the color black. He's just as nice as I expected him to be., maybe more. It's must be a dream, nothing this amazing ever happens in reality.
When the bell rings, Dan hands me the paper he'd been scribbling on with a huge grin. "I'll see you around Phil." I wave goodbye shyly as he walks out the door. I collect my things and head to my next class.
Once I take a seat in my english class, I slowly unfold the paper with shaky hands. My heart almost stops when I read what is written on it

I quickly enter it into my phone and make a mental note to text Dan later. I do my best to ignore the way my stomach flutters as I read over the two kisses at the end.
I try to keep my thoughts off of Dan as I get through my school day. But it is exceedingly difficult as he's in 4 of my 8 classes and my lunch. I see him laughing with Chris and Pj in History, taking notes in Maths, chatting with the other football players in Lunch, I can't escape him. I try to avoid staring but it's extremely hard when he seems to emanate light on his own. I can't keep my eyes off of him no matter how hard I try.
At one point he noticed me looking and gave me a small smile and wave. I returned the gesture and turn back around with a blush blooming on my cheeks.

Over the next few weeks, Dan and I grow extremely close. We text 24/7 and he even moved to sit next to me at lunch. Everything is perfect, except one thing. My small crush on Dan grows the more we hang out. I can't get the thought of Dan's soft lips touching mine out of my head. God damn him for being so fucking attractive.

Confused, I open my window only to see Dan in the driveway, leaning against his black truck.

I quickly grab my coat and run to the kitchen, writing a note to my parents.

I stick the note to the front door at eye level and run out to meet Dan. He grins and opens the passenger door for me like a gentleman. I giggle at his shivalry and climb in, I watch as he walks around to the drivers seat. He starts the car and drives towards who knows where.
The drive starts in an awkward silence. To fill some of the space, Dan turns on a playlist titled "The Adventure Playlist". One of my favorite songs starts playing. Ride by twenty øne pilots. Apparently, We're both mouthing the words and nodding along.

When the beat drops, Dan starts going insane. Head banging and air guitaring. I burst into a fit of giggles at his antics. I start air drumming along as well. I'm the Josh to his Tyler. When the song calms back down we are both out of breath and panting. Dan rolls down the windows and the cool refreshing night air floods into the car.
I look over at Dan and see that his curls and blowing around slightly in the breeze. He has a huge grin plastered on his face, one of his hands is on the steering wheel and the other is tapping along to the beat on his thigh. He's a tantalizing sight. I've fallen hard and fast for the boy beside me.
Just then, my phone buzzes in my pocket. I see a text from my mom as the screen lights up.

I giggle at my mom's text, which causes Dan to give me a confused look with a hint of... is that jealousy? No, it can't be. I show him the text causing him to chuckle as well. It's a gorgeous sound. It's not too deep and it's not too high pitched. It's authentically Dan.
I send my mom a quick response and tuck my phone away.
We arrive at the location and I hop out of the truck. I look around to see that we're in a big clearing.
"Dan what the hell are we doing here?" I ask. Dan lays a blanket in the bed of his truck and holds out his hand for me to take.
"You'll see." He says mysteriously. I giggle and take his hand. He helps me into the bed and then hoists himself up as well. He whispers into my ear, "Just lay back and look at the sky." I can feel his hot breath against my neck, sending shivers down my spine. I follow his instructions and lay back. I'm met with a gorgeous sight. Stars, too many to count, speckle the sky and illuminate the night. I gasp softly and hear Dan chuckle next to me.
"Beautiful right?" He says. I nod without really registering what he says. This causes another chuckle to escape Dan's lips. "There's only one thing more beautiful than this." He sighs. I hum quizzically. "You." He says, barely audible. That statement caught me off guard. I turn to Dan in shock, unsure of whether I heard him right or not.
"What?" I say. Dan, the popular, cool as a cucumber guy, is blushing.
"I-I've kinda has a crush on you since sophomore year. I've wanted to talk to you forever but I was too nervous." He admits.
I'm left speechless. Dan, my crush of 5 years, friend of 5 months, has a crush on me?? But, how? Why? I do the only thing I can think of.
I. Fucking. Kiss. Dan. Howell.
My lips are on his and they're softer than I had anticipated. Slightly chapped but sweet all the same. He kisses back a few seconds later. It was just amazing. We pulled back only because we needed air. We smiled widely at each other.
The longer we stayed into the night, the colder it became. Though I spent most of it snuggled up to Dan, I was still shivering. He seemed to notice this and tugged off the black hoodie he had on and hands it to me. I thank him and throw it on, snuggling closer to him.
"I wish we didn't have to go to college. I don't want you to move away and forget me. I don't want to lose you." I say truthfully.
Dan smiles understandingly and places a peck on my lips before whispering, "You'll never lose me." I look at him thankfully before pulling him into a deep kiss.
