Chapter 43 - Broken Promise

Lin's P.O.V.

To say I was shocked and confused was an understatement. Those two words were not enough to describe what I was feeling at this moment.

All I could manage to do was stare blankly at Jake as he drove silently. I knew he was aware that I was staring at him, but he brushed it off.

"Are you for real?" I managed to choke out.

Jake slowly turned his gaze off the road to look at me. "What?"

I released a frustrated sigh.

"You're seriously taking me home?"

Jake's eyes were back on the road, but I could see that he was trying his best to hide the amusement from his face.

Why was he finding this amusing?

"After you actually proposed to me, you're taking me home?" I snarled.

Jake didn't answer and took a short turn. And soon, he was parked at our driveway.

I was heaving in anger. I was furious at this man!

"Are you for real?" I repeated my previous question.

"Yes, Angeline."

My eyes popped out of my sockets as if they were going to fall out.

What game was he playing at?

"I am this close to punching you right now!"

He chuckled.

He actually had the nerve to freaking chuckle!

I fisted my hand and was ready to sucker punch him, when his warm hand wrapped around my fisted hand.

"My love, what am I suppose to do?"

The way he called me 'my love' was enough to calm me down but burn my heart at the same time. How he was able to flatter and annoy me at the same time was beyond me. Maybe I was going mad. But I was mad ever since I was with him. That's what Jake does to me. He makes me mad.

And just like what Freddy McLair from Skins said, "that's what love's suppose to do."

"I don't know? Let me sleep with you tonight? Isn't that what couples do when they're finally engaged?"

Jake released my hand so he could caress my cheeks with both of his hands.

"Lin, your parents have a-listed me as a no no for you. And asking your hand in marriage without their permission is a no no. I have to earn their trust. So, I'm sorry for being old schooled and all, but I can't keep you in my house all night until we're married."

My jaw dropped. It wasn't just an expression. My jaw literally dropped. As in my mouth hung open.

"What?" I asked still dumbfounded.

Forgive me for being so shocked, but Jake being traditional and old school was like witnessing a donkey give birth to an elephant. It was that unexpected and unbelievable.

The Jake that I knew was fuck before love. He was the kind of guy that would screw at night and leave in the morning. But then again, he was that kind of guy that would be extremely unexpected. A guy who would profess his love at a burger restaurant a guy who would ask me to marry him right after we fight. He was that unpredictable.

"I'll be back here tomorrow, okay?" He asked with his hand on mine.

I was at lost of words as I stared at his brown orbs that was slightly shinning because of the moon.

"Promise?" I asked.

"I promise."

He pressed a soft chaste kiss on my lips before he went out of his car. He walked towards my side and opened my car door.

"My lady," he said with a posh accent as he opened my door wide.

I got out of the car and together we walked towards my porch.

"I'll see you tomorrow, Mr. Grey," I whispered as we came into a stop at our front door.

"Ditto, Ms. Wilson."

He leaned down and pressed his soft lips against mine. My arms snaked to his neck, bringing him closer to me. In a matter of seconds we were having a full blown make out session.

Jake immediately pulled away from me, make me release a groan.

"Don't groan, Angel. I might not keep my words about being 'old schooled' if we continue this make out session," he whispered with his lips still grazing mine.

With my eyes closed, I slowly nodded my head against his words.

"Goodnight, Lin."

"Goodnight, Jake."

-*-*-*-

The next morning I was already awake by 7 am. My eyes were red and my head was pounding because I didn't get enough sleep last night. And a certain Jake Grey was the reason for my little up all night session.

I got out of my bed and hurried in my shower. For the first time in months, I got myself to get out of my bed on my own free will.

As soon as I was all dressed I hopped down the stairs only to be met by my fuming mother.

"What time did you go home last night?" She snarled with her arms crossed against her chest.

I wanted so badly to scream at her saying that I'm already 20. And the way she acts makes me feel like I'm freaking 16.

"I don't know," I simply answered.

She looked at me up and down. "And where are you going?"

I shrugged and plopped myself on the couch where my dad my sitting. "Nowhere."

My mom's eyes narrowed. Her mouth opened but whatever she was going to say was cut off by our annoying doorbell.

My heart pumped in my chest. It was like I was going to my first date. I kept my cool and stood up with my palms sweaty.

"No," my mom snapped at me. "Sit down."

That's when I got nervous. I wasn't even sure if right outside our door was Jake since he didn't say a word about what time he'll be here.

My mom walked towards the front door and I heard the faint sound of our door opening.

And I was answered.

"Oh, Zach! What brings you here?" I heard my mom gushed.

Deep inside I knew that mom wanted Zach and I to be together so badly. She would treat him like her own child and make unnecessary comments about us having kids.

I can't blame her, Zach's hot. Blue eyes and lean body. A face to die to for. But has mom laid eyes on Jake properly? I mean, not to compare and all but Jake's tops every guy I know. His face wasn't only to die for, it was worth selling your soul. His body, damn his body, it was enough just to simply look at it.

"Hey, Mrs. Wilson. Just visiting Lin," Zach's voice erupted.

"Come on in," my mom insisted.

Few seconds later my mom showed up with her hands wrapped against Zach's arm. I couldn't help but laugh at how my mom was clinging to him and Zach looks nothing but uncomfortable.

If Zach was as old as my mom, she would quickly divorce my dad just to get a taste of this blue eyed boy.

"Hey, Lin," Zach said in subtle tone of help.

I chuckled before standing up.

"Wanna go somewhere private?" I offered since I pity him.

He immediately nodded his head.

"Are you two finally together?" My mom gushed.

And I wanted nothing but to face palm myself.

"No, mom."

Her face fell.

I grabbed Zach's hand and pulled him upstairs towards my room.

Once we got settled, he started laughing.

"Your mom's still not over about us being together?"

I chuckled. "Yes. My gosh, when will it get to her head that you're freaking taken!"

"Thanks," he said out of the blue.

My laughter died down at his sudden change of mood.

"What?"

"For saying that I'm taken. Everybody thinks I'm single."

My heart broke. I knew he had moved on but his heart still holds one girl.

"Well, what do you think?" I asked.

He smiled softly with his eyes focused on my mattress.

"I'm taken."

"I don't know how you do this, Zach."

He laughed and looked up at me.

"I guess, when you find 'the one' you wont look anymore. Even that person is gone, you'd still feel her presence. And up until now, I don't even know how, but I'm still falling for her. Each single day, I just fall more deeply in love with Alex."

His words hit me. That's how I feel about Jake. I couldn't help but fall for him harder. Even though he would screw up, break my heart, and make me cry. I was still helplessly falling for him.

"Is that what you feel about Jake?" Zach asked.

And it was my turn to smile. "Yes. Hell yes."

"Yeah, that's why I'm here actually."

I looked at him, still confused.

"What do you mean?"

"I'm going back to New York tomorrow with him. And if you really do love him, you wont let him get on that plane with me."

I shook my head. "Sometimes, you have a really bad timing, Zach."

He looked at me with pure confusion.

"He's coming over tonight," I said with an ear splitting grin on my face.

I was expecting him to smile or whatever but instead Zach groaned.

"I woke up this early for nothing?" He grumbled.

I laughed. "At least be happy for me?"

He shook his head. "I'm happy for you, Lin. After all these problems and crap, you guys deserve every happiness."

"We still have one more crap though. My parents still considers Jake as a threat. I don't even know why."

"Maybe, they just really love me."

I rolled my eyes at his cockiness. "You can go now."

He laughed. "You'll get over this, Lin. You'll have a great life with Jake."

-*-*-*-

Zach hung out with me and before I realized it, it was already past noon.

"We've been watching this shit for 5 hours?" Zach gapped at the dvd.

I laughed. "I told you. Now, Delena or Stelena?"

Zach narrowed his eyes at me. "I'm going."

He stood up and brushed his jeans.

"I can't believe you made me watch vampire shit."

I followed his lead out of my room as he grumbled under his breath.

"Delena or Stelena?" I asked for the enth time.

"Fuck off, Lin."

When we reached the lounging room, I saw my mom with a wide smile on her face.

"Staying for lunch, Zach?" She offered.

"Thank you for the offer, Mrs. Wilson, but I have somewhere else to be," Zach declined.

My mom looked disappointed but that only made her more determined to get Zach to stay here.

"I insist, Zachary. Is it really that important?"

Zach nodded his head. "I'm going to visit my girlfriend."

My heart stopped. Zach has a girlfriend? Didn't he just say that he's single. I mean, it's not wrong for him to have a girlfriend, but the thought broke my heart. All I could do at that moment was think about Alex. What about my best friend?

"Girlfriend?" My mom asked in shock.

Zach had a goofy smile on his face. "Yes, mam. I shouldn't keep her waiting."

I was silent as I walked Zach out of our house. I didn't know why, but I was furious. It felt like I just found out that my best friend's boyfriend is cheating on her.

"You can remove that frown on your face, Lin." He chuckled.

His chuckle only made me furious.

"How dare-"

He rolled his eyes at me. "I'm going to the cemetery."

"Oh."

He laughed at my stupidity as he walked towards his car. Before he got in he faced me with a smirk.

"Delena."

As if out of instinct I fist pumped the air. "Yeah!"

-*-*-*-

Disappointment rushed in me as I sat at our dinner table with my family. It was past 8 and Jake has gone MIA on me. I tried texting him but he didn't reply and I also tried calling him but he never answered his phone. I was beyond furious.

He did say that he was coming over today right?

Had he changed his mind?

My mom was making small talks but my dad and I practically ignored her and just ate dinner.

I couldn't bring myself to even snap at my mother as she talked about getting Zach to date me. I was not in the mood to even make a comeback. My mind was still wrapped over the fact that Jake did not show up.

"Angeline!" My mother snapped.

I looked up at her with a dumbfound expression.

"What?"

Anger filled my mom's expression. I was readying myself to tune her out but my dad butt in.

"Do you want to be excused, Lin?"

My heart warmed. He was aware that I was distracted and was not ready to be taking my mom's crap tonight.

"Yes. Thank you, dad."

I got up from my seat, tuning out my mother's protests. As I was already out of the door, I turned back and walked towards my father. He looked at me in confusion but I leaned down and gave him a small peck on his cheek.

"I love you, dad."

It was my first time in months to give him any affection. The shock on my mom's face was priceless since I never gave her affection. So far, she's not receiving any.

When I got to my room, I tried to call Jake again, but it went straight to voice mail.

"Where are the hell are you, Jake? Please please have a reasonable excuse. I love you."

I placed down my phone and laid down on my bed. My gaze was on the ceiling for hours as I thought about Jake not coming. My eyes was starting to get droopy but one think was in my mind.

Jake broke his promise.
