Hey there Demons, it's me, ya boy

Au

"But I wanna become friends with him!" Patton whined, pouting at his friend who sat beside his body which was sprawled across the grass. He looked up from his phone, exasperated as he turned to Roman who was silently going through lines for the next play he was acting in.

Patton had wanted to become friends with the new boy for weeks now, but Virgil and Roman thought against it. From their first encounter not only was he a complete douchebag, he also insulted Patton, the kindest fucking boy in the entire school. The new kid was nothing more than a cocky asshole who cares more about school work than other people's feelings.

Even so, Patton seemed adamant.

"Why him?" Roman spoke up to save Virgil from his suffering. "You could become friends with anyone!" He exclaimed, waving his arms around as a gesture to every other student who sat out in the field. "Why him?" He repeated. Patton sat up and shrugged, pulling his cardigan up his shoulders so it wouldn't slip off. Patton didn't entirely understand why he wanted to become close with the boy that had offended them all, usually he ignores mean people, but the new boy seems...different. Compared to any other mean student, he doesn't seem like he wants to be mean, he's forcing it, almost, and Patton wants to know why.

Unfortunately he couldn't do it today, as he had to leave school early to go to the hospital. His younger brother - Remy - had fallen into a car accident due to his babysitter at the time being a slight bit reckless for the young boy's amusement. Luckily, he was mostly okay, his arm was constricted by a cast, and he had a few cuts and bruises, nothing life threatening.

He was allowed to leave today, and agreed to the young boy's request for Patton to be there, too. So, once arriving at the hospital, Patton skipped in beside his two moms, waving at a few nurses and doctors he passed by. Naturally, he was an all-around nice guy, who would never dream of purposely making someone feel bad. Bringing happiness and joy to others always lifted his spirits and made him feel that much better.

"Remy!" He called out happily upon entering his room. The little boy perked his head up and waved, the sunglasses he stole from his mom a few months ago slipping down his nose. Patton giggled, skipping over to cradle the boy in a hug that wasn't too tight as to harm him.

"You arrived at a good time" the doctor who was tending to another child spoke up, crossing his arms behind his back while stepping over, nodding his head at Remy who sipped his juice from the straw in the large cup situated on the table beside his bed.

"He's been asleep all day" the doctor chortled. Remy only grinned, nuzzling into Patton who had sat next to him.

"He gets that from his mom" their mother spoke up, pinching both of his cheeks. Remy giggled, leaning forward to boop their noses together. They still had to wait a few hours so they could finish the last checkups with Remy, so to pass the time Patton explored the parts of the hospital he was allowed too, sometimes sitting on the balconies, other times playing with the kids who were in the waiting room.

While walking down one of the hallway's, he was pushed to the side by a few doctors and nurses who rushed down the hallway with a bed carrying a body. Due to the sudden forcefulness, he didn't have enough time to catch himself on the wall, so he collapsed into the room he was shoved into, groaning a little in pain as his head hit the floor.

"Hello? Are you okay?" A soft female voice spoke from above him. Cracking open his eyes, he saw a woman's face leaning over him from the bed she laid in. She looked frail, and had her long, glossy black hair in a loose bun sat atop her head. Grinning sheepishly, he jumped up, straightening out his clothes that became ruffled from the fall.

"Yeah! Sorry for barging in like that" he apologised, leaning on the bed frame. "It's quite alright, you had a nasty fall, want me to call in a nurse?" Patton shook his head, reassuring her he was completely okay, besides he wouldn't want to be a bother.

"What's your name?"

"Patton!" He replied cheerily, sitting on the seat she gestured to. "Such a lovely name..." she commented with a faint smile, eyes drifting to the window that she was able to lay next to, luckily the sun didn't shine in, so she wouldn't ever be blinded by the bright light of the burning star.

"I should think my husband will be here soon" she turned to Patton once more, "he said he'll only be a moment" she added, explaining a little further. "Oh! Want me to wait till he comes back? I can keep you company" Patton offered, and after she agreed they fell into a happy conversation about their favourite flowers.

Time passed, and before Patton knew it he was sitting opposite the woman he still didn't know the name of, playing games of chess he always seemed to lose, but he didn't mind, seeing the glee on her face each time was enough for him.

Patton looked over to the door after he heard it open, expecting to see the woman's husband that had been mentioned quite a few times, but felt shock course through him when his eyes met with the new student's.

"Logan" he breathed, quickly sliding out of the bed, suddenly feeling very out of place. The boy, who was still wearing the blue tie he adorns in school, looked Patton up and down with a blank expression, body more tense than it usually was.

"Oh, Doctor?" The woman smiled at Logan who breathed in deeply, placing a book down on a table, turning to Patton sharply. "Get out" he ordered icily, and Patton was about to do so when the woman drew in a sharp gasp, glaring at Logan who licked his lips and avoided her gaze.

"Do not speak to my dear Patton like that!"

"Mother, please" he begged quietly, turning to the woman that didn't stare at him like he was her son. It took him a moment, but when he realised what was happening, Patton covered his hand with his mouth and took a step back, feeling his heart being crushed.

"Just wait till my husband comes back" she crossed her arms, turning her head from Logan who ducked his own head down, rubbing his eyes after removing his glasses. Patton didn't know what to do, should he just leave? Would that cause more problems? Or...should he try and comfort him?

"Logan, I'm sorry" the cardigan-loving boy murmured gently, moving slowly across the room until he was close enough to Logan to touch him, but he didn't in fear he would make the situation worse. Logan stood up straight, staring at Patton with narrowed, cold eyes. Most people would see just that, anger, but not Patton; he saw past that, and could almost feel the pain that swarmed around in those beautiful night-sky coloured eyes.

Patton went to say more, but then felt like he could do better if he made the woman happy again. So, sending Logan a gentle smile, he sat himself back up on the bed and placed a hand on the woman's wrinkly one. She looked over and smiled right back at the boy who had fallen into the room an entire hour ago. "It's lovely to meet your son, ma'am" his voice was caring, proving that Logan's behaviour hadn't affected him in a bad way, unlike anyone else that had ever tried to communicate with the tie-collecting boy.

"Son? Oh...oh no, I don't have a son, you must be mistaken, me and my husband have a beautiful daughter" she explained, making Patton draw his eyebrows together in confusion, and stare at Logan who had taken a seat with his head titled towards the ground. Not a moment later, Patton turned back to the woman and carried on wearing his reassuring smile.

"What's she like?"

The mere question made the old woman go into a very long and enthusiastic talk about her daughter, about her achievements, her friends, everything she had done in life to get where she was today, with a husband, and a son. Although, not a moment too soon and the woman's daughter wasn't an adult anymore, and she has returned back to a child, living in the house with the woman and her husband that still hasn't arrived yet.

"She sounds wonderful" Patton complimented the unknown woman once she had finished her mini monologue. She nodded in agreement, holding both of Patton's hands together. "Where is she?" Patton decided to ask, noticing the woman go to respond, but her face fell, and her eyes clouded.

"Where's who, love?"

"Your...daughter" he hesitated.

"Oh, Abigail...is she here?"

"Um" Patton shifted uncomfortably, not entirely knowing what to say without further confusing the woman. Logan finally stood up, taking a place beside the bed, he stared at Patton with a look that almost broke his heart, the cardigan-wearing boy wondering how much loss this stoic boy has already been through at such a young age.

"She's not here, mother" Logan replied, gripping the bed frame tightly. "She is with her son at home" he forced through gritted teeth, waiting until she nodded and relaxed against the plush cushions. Afterwards, Logan turned his gaze towards Patton and gestured his head towards the door, indicating for him to leave. The boy agreed and slowly stood up, sending one more apologetic look at the boy who had already turned away.

With a heavy heart, he left the room and down the hallway, spotting Remy being carried out of his room by their mother who teased him and pinched his cheeks. He plastered on a smile, cooing at his brother who giggled and grabbed his large pair of sunglasses, wearing them with pride. Everyone who passed commented on how adorable he was, Remy sucking up the compliments for his already spiked self-confidence.

Patton wanted to leave, but he couldn't, for when he passed by the room he knew Logan to be in, he felt his heart pound with pain, and throat clog up at the thought of him and how hurt he looked. He told his mom's he'd meet them at the car, waiting until they were out of sight before peeking his head into the room, seeing Logan pressing a gentle kiss to the woman's forehead - she appeared to have fallen asleep.

Grabbing his book, he turned to go and flinched when he saw Patton standing in the doorway. Timidly, he pushed the door open wider and fiddled with his hands messily while explaining himself.

"I-...I didn't-" taking a breath, he lowered his gaze. "I'm sorry, I don't..entirely understand but if you need anyone I'm here..." he drifted, all he wanted to do was help Logan in anyway he could, but it all depends if Logan will allow him to.

The boy was silent for awhile, tapping his book. "You wish to help, yes?"

Patton nodded his head eagerly.

"Than do these three things; one, never talk to my mother again, two; do not speak about this to anyone, and three; never speak to me again" Patton flinched as Logan headed by in a storm, head ducked down, not looking up at the boy who stopped in the hallway, feeling the need to apologise, because all Patton wanted to do was help, but all his past friends had abandoned him and opted for bullying instead, so how could he trust this stranger?

Pushing on, he left the hospital as fast as he could, but once he made it outside he let out a grumble at the sight of rain pouring from the dark clouds that had appeared out of nowhere. He tugged out his phone, ready to call a taxi when a soft voice stopped him from doing so.

"My mom could give you a lift...if you want"

Patton. Why? Logan couldn't understand, his behaviour couldn't be more of a hint that he didn't want to become close with anyone, or obtain help from anyone, so why is Patton so persistent? Can he not gather a clue? Although, a ride would be very useful, as he didn't have any spare change, and he was sure his foster family wouldn't pay for the fare.

"Please" He murmured defeatedly. Patton nodded, but he still looked hurt from Logan's previous words, so he didn't say anything else, only hurriedly led Logan across the carpark to their car. Patton explained to his curious mother's who this boy was, and he needed a lift home. They both agreed and once Logan told his address they set off through the rain. Due to Remy having a car seat, Patton had to squash himself in the middle with Logan on the side. The close proximity only made this more awkward than it needed to be, in the end Patton had to rest his arm on Logan's thigh, as he couldn't cross his arms if Logan was, too.

"Who's that?" Remy questioned once he looked up from his toy phone. Patton beamed at his younger brother, gesturing to Logan who didn't look pleased. "That's Logan; he's my friend" Patton added quietly, but Logan heard, turning his head to raise an eyebrow at Patton who giggled behind his hand. Remy peered closely at Logan, slowly turning his head to the side.

"Friends like Mom and Mom?"

Patton blushed, shaking his head furiously. Their parents shared knowing looks, but decided against teasing their son who was already an embarrassed mess. Logan was able to stifle the dark red that wanted to rest on his cheeks, focusing more on his hands that clenched his shirt tightly.

"No-no!" He squeaked, "not like that..."

"Not yet" Remy corrected, sliding his sunglasses up his nose. Patton covered his face to try and hide his embarrassment, Logan turning his head to stare out the window, in case he did seem as flustered as Patton. They arrived at Logan's house, Patton insisted he led him to the front door with his umbrella, so that was exactly what the boy did.

"Patton..." Logan sighed, standing in front of the door. "Why are you so kind? I do not deserve it" Patton shrugged, smiling cutely. "Everyone deserves kindness" Patton excused, "even you" tapping his nose, Patton went to leave when Logan gripped his arm.

"I apologise for my behaviour"

"Don't worry, Lo! Say, why don't you hang out with me and my friends tomorrow?"

Logan hesitated. "How can I trust you?"

"By saying yes"

So, he did.
