Building an email list

By ElisabethKitzing

As an indie musician you love to share your goods with your community. And the more the merrier! I have had a very small, friendly and tight group with me now for a long time. Although I have a few that follow my homepage and many more "fans" through Twitter I really want to connect with people that need my songs/books.

Because I haven't released more than a few songs and music videos yet, you might think that I don't really have the collateral to expand.  But I am now going to look into the best ways to grow my community email list and we'll see where that takes me.

A disclaimer

I have been watching what other musicians do in the industry and getting inspiration from them. But I see how many are selling their souls to get fans. I see that artists are forced to or feel compelled to add some new post on Instagram as often as possible just to keep their stats up. I see that they go through the album cycle and push for sales. I don't intend to do that. It turns my stomach. I do want my fan base to grow, but I want it to grow at a pace where I am in balance.

Sharing news and posting when I feel like I have something great to share is o.k. though. It is not about fame or sales. For me, my music is about a life hack.

May 7th 2019: I have changed gears and have been more active on Instagram and Twitter because I realise that the release is going to be better he more fans I have before I release it. But I am still trying to be personal and keep my head. There was a period where I was working too hard at it but now I have to concentrate on getting the music done.

Social Media focus

I just want to let you know that I have been looking into social media tools for a long time and reading about growing an audience. But now I am starting to focus on a few of these. I have spread myself too thin trying to be everywhere. ReverbNation has been great because, from it you can post to Twitter and Facebook in one mighty swoop. That saves time.

Instagram has been great too. It is growing on me and my followers are picking up.

What are doing that works? Let me know in the comments.
