Chapter four
What I Saw
Lunch ends with barely a word from me except, “Hi, I’m Marissa”. I’ve been concentrating on figuring out where Lydia can be. She wasn’t in the lunchroom. I looked all around and even walked. Is she hurt, captured, being punished? I can’t help but think negatively because this whole town is unjust, more like whole island. All students are rushing around to their next class.
While everyone’s distracted, I will look for Lydia. She might just be somewhere all by herself. Hope is all I have. Hope that she isn’t hurt, being punished, or worse. Jesse didn’t notice when I left his side. He’s busy chatting with his guy friends anyway. Here I go again on this lonely road with no one by me. Where do I even start looking for her in her classroom? I have to start somewhere. Walking fast, I try to find where the room would be. A scream makes me cringe.
“Stop it! Let me out! Please, someone help me!” That voice, I know who it belongs to. Lydia. No, how could this happen?
My legs run towards the screams, taking me to a closet, I can’t believe what I see. A whip is in someone’s hand whipping it against Lydia. Her back is torn up from the lash of it. I only utter out, “Stop!” The person backs up in astonishment. We struggle over control of the whip, the woman having the upper hand. I get hit on the side with it once, but it doesn’t deter me, I keep going after her. “Get out of here!” I yell to Lydia. She runs out fast to get help for me.
“You stupid girl, give me the whip now! You’re going to be in way more trouble than you want if you don’t give it to me!” That last sentence makes me put it down to run away.
