John's POV
Things couldn't have been any better. Well... (Y/N) could be here right now.
(Y/N) finally achieved her dream of being a famous scientist. Reluctantly, she left me and New York to travel the U.S about 6 months back. She had yet to return home. I missed her like hell, but I knew she was enjoying herself out there. We FaceTimed pretty much every night and constantly texted.
Now, I was out in Central Park with our four-year-old daughter, Frances. Frances was our everything. She looked more like me than (Y/N) but she acted very much like her mother.
Frances was perched on my shoulders as we walked down a path, giggling at all the autumn leaves falling around us. It was late September, and (Y/N) said she'd be home by October. Frances was ecstatic for her mother's return.
Frances burst into a fit of giggles. "Daddy daddy look! I caught a leaf!" I turned my head to see a fiery red leaf in her tiny fist.
I laughed. "Good job!" She cheered as I kept walking, a grin on my face.
We eventually reached an open field, where I sat her down and she started running around the grass, her pinkish-red dress flowing behind her. I laughed and she turned toward me, flashing a toothy smile.
I started walking toward her. "Imma getcha, Frances!"
Frances squealed and started running across the field. I chased after her, catching her rather quickly and scooping her up. She squeaked as her small hands grabbed my arms. "You weren't supposed to catch me!" I only laughed, spinning her around.
I didn't happen to see the special someone watching us from afar.
Your POV
"Imma getcha, Frances!"
I watched my husband with an amused as he chased our four-year-old daughter. He had sent me a text earlier that day saying he was going with Frances to Central Park.
Perfect surprise!
Frances squealed and grabbed John's arms as he picked her up, both of them laughing. "You weren't supposed to catch me!" I heard Frances exclaim.
John just laughed as he spun her around. Soon enough he put her down and he grabbed her tiny hand as they walked back to a nearby bench. I quickly hid behind the tree I was near. I peeked around the tree.
Frances, being the toddler she is, knelt down onto the grass instead of the bench. John chuckled and sat criss-cross next to her.
John pulled something green out of his pocket. "I brought something for you..."
Frances gasped. "Shelly!" Yeah... Frances had John's love of turtles. I recognized it as the small plush turtle I had bought her when I went out of state for the first time. It went everywhere with her.
John handed it to Frances and leaned on his arms. Frances studied the turtle and then looked up at John, smiling sweetly. John had a loving smile on his face and I couldn't help but smile as well, my eyes almost tearing up looking at them.
When they looked away, I snuck up behind them, bending down. Frances turned while John wasn't looking and her eyes widened as wide as saucers. I put my finger to my lips, signaling her to be quiet. Frances giggled quietly and nodded, petting her turtle. I snuck behind John and Frances's smile widened. "What're you smiling at, Fran?"
Frances only giggled. "I'm just thinking about mommy!" I smiled at her.
"You miss her, don't ya?" John asked.
Frances nodded, still grinning.
"I do too, Fran."
I grinned mischievously and went to wrap my arms around him. Frances started giggling like crazy. "I swear, Fran, is thinking about mommy really making you this excited?"
"Yeah yeah yeah! I'm just excited for her return!"
John laughed. "Of course you are, you and me both."
I wrapped my arms around John's waist and rested my head on his shoulders.
"Good. Because I missed you both too."
I let go of John as he turned around, startled. His eyes widened.
"I thought--.. How did.. what?!"
I giggled. "They let me go home early. Surprise~!"
An excited smile spread across John's face as his arms quickly pulled me into a tight hug. I rested my head on his shoulder as I looked at Frances, who giggled. I smiled widely and nuzzled my face into the crook of his neck. When we pulled away, his hands stayed on my waist, and his hazel eyes sparkled with faint tears.
Frances crawled over to us. She spotted his tears. "Don't cry, daddy!"
John laughed, removing a hand from my waist to pull her over. Frances wrapped her tiny arms around me, cheering.
"You're back! You're back!"
"Yeah! And I'm here to stay for a while. No more traveling for a couple months!"
Frances cheered again and John and I laughed. I wiped a few stray tears from his freckled cheeks. "Did you miss me that much, Freckles?"
John held the hand that was on his cheek. "Yeah. I did. The apartment wasn't the same without you, chickadee."
We sat on the ground a few minutes, Frances curled up in my lap and John's arm wrapped around me.
Eventually, we decided it was time to go home. Frances climbed onto John's shoulders and John intertwined our fingers. I smiled and leaned my head against his arm like we used to as we walked.
Frances was playing with Shelly and John still appeared to be slightly shocked. I squeezed his hand, and he rubbed my hand with his thumb. I smiled brightly and John did too.
"I have my two favorite girls again.. I can't believe it," he said, chuckling.
"I can," I replied.
"Me too!" Frances chirped.
John looked at me. "I'm glad you're back, chickadee. I love you."
I looked up at him. "I'm happy I'm home too, Freckles. I love you too."
With that, I looked back at the path ahead, a smile on John's face and mine as we heard Frances giggling at the world around us.
The world just seemed lighter around them. My childish, loving freckled husband, and my outgoing, silly daughter. This was our future, and it couldn't have been better or brighter.
