EASTERN-AFFILIATED COLONIES

***

(Inspired by (mostly) Eastern Asian countries and former Soviet countries.)

Oceanic and African countries are not affiliated with either 'side'.

["Tristan und Isolde, Prelude" | Melancholia Soundtrack | by Richard Wagner]

"功率--Gōnglu."

(Power)

"WE STAY TOGETHER, WE STAY STRONG: US AGAINST THE GALAXY, ALONE."

(This is very similar to Fidem! It'll be short because it's basically the same thing as that, but the Western version of it.)

o People from Gōnglu are called:

< Gonglusians. (Derogatory terms: Powerless.) >

o Species Breakdown:

< mostly human. 90%, with 10% otherwise. Supernaturals are pushed away from this society, hence them living secretly and whatnot. >

o Language:

< a very large mixture of languages--mostly Mandarin Chinese and Russian. >

o Culture (the arts, academics, sports, clothing, greetings, beliefs)

< similar to Fidem--elitist, cold people. They have been given everything and will never be willing to lose anything--they work for power, and are willing to push anyone else down to get it. They are spoiled, used to getting the best of the best, but are very well-educated and cultured, often pushed to become the top. They are pushed to homogeneity, to leadership--to be type A. They generally are the mold, though. They are also very cold and cruel, calloused to any pain or outside hurt. They're very similar to people from Fidem, but are colder, still staying close to families, though.

as for arts, there is a thriving art world (though most artists are swayed from pursuing any type of art). Most of it is inspired by futurism--clean lines, sharp colors, contrasted against cold minimalism. Propaganda posters like the style of the Cold War-era are posted everywhere in support of the President and against supernaturals, the West, war.

sports aren't very encouraged; instead, parents will generally push children to focus on their studies and to excel with those. Table tennis is very popular, as well as badminton and volleyball ("net" games), and figure skating and weight lifting. Swimming isn't very popular, due to many old cities being flooded on Earth.

clothing is minimalist, very conservative--and people bow to great, but do not make contact. No kissing, hugging, etc.

people aren't generally the most religious here, but do believe in spirits, balance, and whatnot. A small population are Eastern Orthodox Christian, though they are very few and far between. >

o Ceremonies:

< (not many ceremonies or celebrations.)

-The Chinese New Year (Spring Festival)--sales, parties, lion and dragon dances, fireworks, dragons moving in the streets, drinks, street food galore. People visit families for reunions, and give red envelopes as well. Dumplings, too--lots of dumplings.

-Lantern Festival--at the end of the Spring Festival, it's basically Valentine's day, but people set lanterns into the sky. Some have different riddles on them, and children try to solve them. >

o Geography/Climate (landscape/agriculture):

< the planet is covered in cities, and within those cities is a harsh clash of inspirations. One half is the harsh, stark-white concrete buildings, a return of brutalism--the other half, colorful yet clean, inspired by Soviet futurism. The planet is also small, full of mountains, walling different cities. The cities are all across the equator--the poles have icy mountains and large oceans, which house research facilities and factories. >

o Flora/Fauna:

< limited. With most of the planet being either over-developed cities or tundras, there's little in-between. Zoos house strange creatures and people have pets, but otherwise, what great beasts that ("supposedly") once roamed Gōnglu have been long-dead, or kept in captivity in secret. >

o Laws/Government:

< they have newly joined forces with the GO, but are still strictly communist. One party, an authoritarian regime, led by Gregory Sun as their president. >

o History:

< what began as the West's answer to a colony in space, this started as elite. The wealthy, political members, scientists, whatever, all flooding there to leave the hellhole that Earth became. Russian and Chinese men and women flew up, then people from other Asian countries, but it remains the second-smallest 'main' colony, behind Libidia. It is the planet for the wealthy members of the West, basically--quiet, safe, with clueless people who live in their ignorant bliss. Libidia and Gōnglu have clashed, as well as the people, but they truly do have more in common than otherwise. >

_______

"成功--Chénggōng."

(Success)

o People from Chénggōng are called:

< Chénes. (Derogatory terms: Bronzers, Rusted.) >

o Species Breakdown:

< a very large mix, with a good portion of supernaturals. People from here are neutral on the supernatural-human issue, and therefore, many supernaturals are free to travel without issues. Humans make up about 60%. Creatures from Asia--tengu, kitsune, oni, jorōgumo, and qilin make up about 30% of the population; the rest are for vampires, demons, sirens, werewolves, etc. >

o Language:

< most people speak conversational English and Mandarin, but the primary language is Japanese. Some will speak South Korean (or North Korean), but most have converted to Chinese or Japanese. >

o Culture (the arts, academics, sports, clothing, greetings, beliefs)

< beauty trumps above all. People are vain, clean, well-spoken, and often very judging. They are territorial, jealous. Still, they're extremely passionate, creative, and they stick to their guns--not literally. Any bad intentions they hold will not be spoken about--secretive and non-confrontational, they'll keep whatever they think to themselves, rather being polite than rude.

there is some hint of Feudal Japanese culture sticking around, or making a return--people pledge themselves as samurai, will commit seppuku if shamed, etc.

the arts are thriving, with different artists born from here spreading across the country and whatnot--but they still stick to their roots, to home. They create on gods, monsters, and spirits; they never break too far from the 'steampunk' look of their home, either; these people are similar to K-(J-)Pop stars, being sensations. Karaoke is very popular.

they also focus more on the arts than sports, but soccer is pretty popular. They also have e-sports, which have had a return, and 'robotic wrestling' is popular--people creating machines to duke it out.

clothing is a mix of Victorian and traditional Japanese clothing--silk with lace, kimonos with large hats, patterned suits, etc. While many were scared of tattoos due to ties with the Yakuza in the past, people have now embraced it. Most tattoo themselves for beauty standards.

people bow when greeting. Family, honor, and tradition is extremely important. People believe that their families are watching them, and that they must do them proud--they are very spiritual, some of the most in the galaxy; however, the land itself is nothing, easily wasted and destroyed.

while most are well-educated, some people are roped into, essentially, slave labor here. It's taboo to speak of, and is generally ignored. >

o Ceremonies:

< (there are many other smaller celebrations happening as well--fairs, festivals, places for people to show off their art.)

-Setsubun-- the first day of spring, where people throw beans and yell "Fuku wa uchi, oni wa soto!" (Fortune in! Demons out!). People flock to temples, and others dance in the streets, sheer ribbons following in their wake. They show plays of the gods and demons and have several performances at different times; fireworks that show some scenes play in the sky as well. It's an excuse for people to dress beautifully and to do themselves well, to impress the gods and spirits.

-Bon--(Festival of the Dead)--basically a festival to respect and visit the dead (All Hallow's Eve). People dress up like spirits, wearing costumes of yōkai and such, and visit graves. They send off bronze lanterns that fly together to create one large memorial--and then collapse later. Incense is burned in graveyards. People trade different spiced dumplings, some that have different types of fruits, some savory--the type of trick-or-treat that was once in Halloween. It's a three-day process; the last day is where okuri-dango (farewell rice dumplings) are offered to spirits on their path to Meido – the mysterious celestial world of the dead. The Bon Odori (Bon dance) is held too, people going into the streets with different flowers. >

o Geography/Climate (landscape/agriculture):

< varied. The planet has all four seasons, though its winters are short and rain is more common than not. It is reminiscent of the UK, weather-wise--cloudy days are common, with rain very frequent. Bad storms are rare, though.

the planet is composed of a series of island chains--people travel by boat (some looking like giant koi or dragons, able to sail at incredible speeds), or by airship. Things seem deceptively simple, old-timey, reminiscent of steampunk or the Victorian era in England around 1900. In spite of the rust and cogs and gears, technology is as modern as it can get (well--just a step behind Fidem and Gōnglu.)

some islands are larger and more populated than others--and more dirty. Surprisingly, Chénes haven't learned from Earth's mistakes--they over-populate in small pockets of land, and have unsustainable practices. They don't care, though; so long as they do fine, then it's fine.

still, some islands near the poles do house plant life and animal life, but remain untouched for the most part >

o Flora/Fauna:

< the creatures on Chénggōng were magnificent and beautiful--but have been destroyed already in the last few years of the industrial revolution that's rocked the planet. Most don't know about the few strange, wonderful creatures at the poles--or the planet's history. >

o Laws/Government:

< they do much (not-cheap, skilled) labor; mostly in textiles and engineering. Most do work creating new inventions to spread across the universe, or to create patterns, fabrics, etc; fashion and art is very, very large there. They are trained, but are given the freedom to do their thing. After the war, Gōnglu had lightened its hold over Chénggōng, hence its freedoms now. They are closely allied with Gōnglu still, partners. Many representatives come from here. >

o History:

< a place for Gōnglu to host most of its dirty work, it became an extension for the poor who needed a way to escape (hence the 'rusted' look--at first it wasn't intentional). After the wars ended, Chénggōng had its freedoms restored, and people built up, in--and it became the strange, yet beautiful, world it is now. >

NON-AFFILIATED COLONIES [neutral or created in a joint effort]

__________

"Harmonia."

o People from Harmonia are called:

< Harmonians. (Derogatory terms: Cash Grabbers, C-F-OFfs .) >

o Species Breakdown:

< unclear (too new to tell), but it seems as though it has a relative mix of humans and supernaturals, about 70-30%. Of those 70% of humans, many are super-human; rumors have gone around the galaxy that there's "something in the water" they do to make people better. >

o Language:

< English is the primary language, but Mandarin and Russian are popularly spoken as well. People from Harmonia come from anywhere and everywhere, so most major languages are spoken, depending on where you are. >

o Culture (the arts, academics, sports, clothing, greetings, beliefs)

< people are driven by business, money, technology. They are driven, period. They might've not come from everything, but they believe that with a little grease, some smart thinking, and flirting, they can become anything. People from Harmonia are all about unity, peace...so long as they're on top. They're puppeters, manipulative, and with the genetic testing that can make sure all parents have the 'perfect' (or ideal) baby, they're often extremely attractive. They use that to their advantage--and they are sneaky, cunning, and very, very good businessmen (and salesmen).

parents will make sure that their children are perfect--like in the movie Gattica (if you've seen it), parents will test and perfect their fetus's genetics so they come out without a likelihood to be sick, and to make sure they look beautiful, are well-mannered, etc.

they are creative, athletic, and very intelligent people, though their artistry is aimed for advertising, innovation, inventing. Their athleticism is to show themselves off in dances, sports, for scholarships. Their academics shine through their knowledge in selling, buying, whatnot.

love, romance, attraction--they are the kings and queens of one-night-stands. It's never personal--it's always business. Most make it because they can do well in bed.

clothing is fashion-forward, business casual. Clean suits, pencil skirts, buns, etc.; technology is integrated into their limbs, bodies, very clean-cut, sharp; flat colors, etc.

they aren't the most religious people. Harmonians believe in unity, work, and above all else, business. It's always business.

most people living here are young, hip, rich, and smart--when they want to settle down and live in the suburbs somewhere, odds are they'll go to Gōnglu or Fidem.

ultimately, people here are sharks--you gotta be strong and confident (and have something to offer), or else you'll be eaten alive. >

o Ceremonies:

< no ceremonies, no days off (except what you're off for in work). >

o Geography/Climate (landscape/agriculture):

< pockets of cities are safe by giant forcefields. Most people don't own their own transportation to get across the small planet--they do rent different, exclusive spaceships, but they use teleporter pads or sky-ways (subways in the sky) to get across the city, or in different cities. Cities are tight, layered; skyscrapers stretched into the clouds, technology everywhere. It's teh most advanced planet right now.

they have three moons, which keeps the tides steady. >

o Flora/Fauna:

< diverse, but kept restrained in parks and outside of cities. The planet is almost unlike any other; all of its flora and fauna seems to be built of metal. The planet is stone and steel, and creatures reflect that--birds with feathers made from thin plates of steel, plants with ragged edges like saw-blades--it's dangerous but beautiful. People are generally warned to stay clear of the 'wilderness'; parks are safe, with only adorable creatures and non-lethal plants inside. >

o Laws/Government:

< this is where all meetings are currently held, so many are politically evolved. They have varied opinions, though, in almost every way--people come from all over, though most are wealthy and want to stay that way--but they're all businessmen, so they will act in their own best interest. There are silent politics in play--the most powerful people and families, like the Marshalls, Royces, Lis, Smirnovs, Hernandezes, and Nguyens. >

o History:

<this began as a memorial, and a place that was symbolic for unity--but people flooded in. Harmonia evolved, becoming the core tech/business center for the galaxy. Now, people come here for politics, business, and for a good night. >

"The Down Under"

o People from The Down Under are called:

< Underlanders. (Derogatory terms: Trashers, Scrappers, Sanders.) >

o Species Breakdown:

< anything and everything, though with a heavy African-Oceanic prominence in supernaturals. Those who are superhuman have evolved to also survive the elements--if they have elemental control, it's to manipulate sand and to be able to see in sand-storms, if it's fire, they can withstand the heat and not need water, etc. >

o Language:

< tribal languages rule. Main ones are (but not limited to): the Aboriginal language, several Khosian languages (like Khoe, Tuu, and Kx'a), as well as Xhosa and Zulu. Most can speak English as well. >

o Culture (the arts, academics, sports, clothing, greetings, beliefs)

< people are warm, hardworking, and very personable. They are giving, yet firm and tough--they like to hit the ground running, with energy bounding within them, stronger than the heat of their desert suns. Underlanders are a varied people, though; they fit no stereotype, coming from extremely diverse backgrounds, yet they seem connected to their world, and to each other. Very family- and friend-oriented.

the arts are thriving, some of the best in the galaxy. Many Underlanders looked to the past and use tribal influences in their artwork, and afro-futurism is growing as well. People use glowing paint and dyes for their hair, skin, whatnot; food is rich and refined.

clothing is colorful, bright--head-dresses will glow, have patterns that move on them, shifting like sands or seas. Jewelry is very common, and very showy--generally, nothing is subtle, yet it all works. Goggles or sand-blocking glasses (or strange-colored contacts contacts) are common

academics and athletics are both growing--especially the latter. People have to be strong to weather the tough storms and the heat; their most popular sports are sand-sailing, where people will use their own strength and robotic boards to skate through the sand and race. Some will also ride sand-snakes (see flora/fauna) for show. People hunt and poach the strange animals (or train them), too. Soccer's popular, too.

People will greet with touching foreheads, hugging, kissing--Underlanders are very warm, and that reflects in their greetings and beliefs. Large family dinners and parties are frequent. They have a variety of beliefs, mostly draw from ancient tribes mixed with Christianity or Islam, but most respect the world and each other. >

o Ceremonies:

< (people love to celebrate from here. There are countless celebrations and ceremonies, each picked from a different tribe, or ancient ethnic group, etc.)

-Th

o Geography/Climate (landscape/agriculture):

< hot, arid, hard to live in. The Down Under is a desert, and their life reflects that. Some cities are built underground, with glowing water that has healing properties; others have recently been built above the storms that plague the middle. (There are some middle-cities, with walls all around.) While it's hard to find food, people have created greenhouses and gardens; they're smart, and life finds a way.

The 'sky-cities' are for the wealthy, some being crime lords, others being politicians and such. Those underground remain the poorer, common folk--but they're all free, now. Their color and joy shows it. Mountains separate spaces, with cities being far away--there are subways, busses, and camels that take people around (it's unsafe to fly).

at the extreme poles, there are icy mountains. Few people live there. >

o Flora/Fauna:

< it's a dangerous world, full of dangerous, untamed creatures. Sand-snakes--giant, 50-foot-long and 5-feet-thick, with ten rows of razor-sharp teeth, dig into cities on and below-ground, eating everything in sight. Monstrous gorillas with skin like stone can attack. Scorpions are the size of horses. Camels can carry 5 people at a time, with bodies as long as cars. And plants, though sparse, can either save your life or end it. Regardless, people have stayed alive, and some have even trained animals (and domesticated them)--their resilience is impressive. >

o Laws/Government:

< they aren't recognized universally, but have their own rough government--a royal family, and a group of other representatives, each for a different ethnic group and part of the Down Under. There are crime-lords that have a lot of power, but...well--most try to ignore them. >

o History:

< they said it would fail--Underlanders said otherwise. It began as an abandoned planet where people were once to do slave labor (by the West: enslaved people, mostly from Africa and Oceania). It barely lasted--people fought back immediately, gained independence. But they were forgotten by everyone else, and Underlanders were glad for that--they created their own culture, people; they unified, hardened.

their independence isn't recognized, and neither are they as a state or a people, but they are legitimate--they have built their own ships, cities, whatever; they scrapped the mining materials and created a world from it.

some criminals have been exiled to the Down Under (lol like Australia)--and they've made a life for themselves there. Traffickers house here, sure, but most people are good and honest, fighting back the darkness that resides under the sand. >

(These won't have the whole spiel because they're either not too important (the Academy) or will be covered in the next chapter (The Arboria Institute))

"Sook City"

< it began as a neutral grounds for people to trade--it remains the same way now, with giant bazaars posted in every corner. The illegal trading that happens deep in tunnels underground is still...less spoken-of, but it's a by-product of having no eyes posted on them. With many people coming from the Middle East and North Africa, they have a very rich cultural background--it's there. Mosaics on the ceilings, patterned gold and bronze, patterned fabrics.

magic is imbued with the ground, as is technology--narrow streets with men and women selling what they have, with maze-like paths layered all around the world, underground to above. It may be a desert, but it's anything from dead--it's alive.

and it's also .a very, very dangerous, lawless place. The Al-Ardhs rule, with a golden palace in the center of it all. They have a deal with the GO--silence, for payments.

this is a center for drug trade, human trafficking, and many mysterious potions and materials. Apparently, all your wishes can be granted here.

Sooks (people from Sook City) are protective, stubborn, and tough. They'll do anything for a buck and are very frugal, lacking connections to anything--they do see the worth in everything, but struggle with commitment. They speak English and Arabic, primarily, though some speak Hindu, Urdu, Farsi, etc. >

PIRATE TERRITORY

***

["12 Years Later" | Treasure Planet Soundtrack | by James Newton Howard]

"(Space-) Shanty" (called Shanty for short)

o People from Shanty are called:

< Pirates. (Derogatory terms: Scumbags, Assholes, Hooks, [insert name here].) >

o Species Breakdown:

< anything and everything. It's unclear what the ratio is, but most are human. Still, pirates don't discriminate. >

o Language:

< a very large mixture of languages, but most speak English as their primary language. Many speak Mandarin as well. They do use a lot of pirate terminology. >

o Culture (the arts, academics, sports, clothing, greetings, beliefs)

< pirates! Adventure! Action! Life on the seven spirals (of the galaxy)! People are free, wild, careless, and they love to live on the edge, with danger being their middle (or sometimes maiden) name.

their fashion is a mix of traditional pirate getup--blouse-y shirts with puffed collars, earrings in one ear, buckles and buttons, mixed with neon. People will shave their hair, color it; facial hair is strange as well. If it's weird, they'll do it. They want to be pioneers in every way--that includes fashion. They love to dress up fancy on casual days, and to just...stand out. They love attention--the more eyes on them, the better, and because of it, they'll only grin and make it better.

(still, pirates are cutthroat--they'll leave the weak and the wrong-doers on planets that will kill them. This is called marooning. Others walk the plank and are shot into deep space.)

with regards to academics and sports, they aren't taught classically in school, but they're taught how to fight, survive, fly a ship, and how to make a good cocktail. Sports involve fist-fighting, swashbuckling, cannon-firing, etc; drinking competitions are popular, too.

people are a mix of backgrounds and cultures, but complex handshakes are the usual greeting between friends or allies, or some vulgarity or space-shanty (song) they created for other people. They're lovable, admittedly. They believe in space, in coin, and in a good fight.

those who join the pirates lose their name, their pasts--they take a new name, get a dog-tag (a pirate's ID, with a glowing skull and crossbones on one side), and they learn to embrace danger. >

o Ceremonies:

< (pirates love their festivities. They're countless.)

-Grog Day--(once a month) grog, another word for alcohol, is served all day. Biggest drinker without passing out will get an award. Other awards? Massive hangovers. It's an excuse for everyone to go back home and just get drunk together. Lots of hangover food served the day after as a crew.

-The Hunt--an annual event hosted by Neon, it's where a treasure map is handed off to everybody. First one to find the treasure wins a chance to be on his crew--and to have one of his kids on your crew. His kids have chosen to partake in it, against his wishes. However, with Neon-Beard missing for the last few months, it's unclear what will happen--but rumors are going around that there will be a Hunt...from beyond the grave. Or wherever in deep space he is...

-Culture Clash--an event where 'fresh meat' (new members of piratehood) share their talents and culture. Top pirates are shuffled into the best ships. It's highly competitive, often ending in shootouts, fistfights, whatever, but it's fun to watch. It's a pirate olympics of sorts, and not everybody always wins--or lives--in the end. >

o Geography/Climate (landscape/agriculture):

< the planet itself is pretty cool, with dead ground. Once inhabitable, now very inhabited; it's a mixture of all different cultures, with buildings filled with anything and everything. It remains stable with a steady amount of imports, thanks to pirates doing their pirate-ing. This is a part of their taxing--to give what is needed to good ol' Neon and they'll be even. (Along with a portion of their treasure).

house-ships are very popular; the planet is stacked, with layers rising up to the sky. Skyscrapers have bridges connecting places together. Parties with drugs, sex, whatever--it's all there. People love to live by their vices and be free--there are communities on the planet for people to settle down as well, with pirate dating apps (like Pirate2Pirate).

there are two seasons--warm spring, and cool autumn. Mist often blankets the world, too.

there is also a 'red light district' and a 'glow-market' (black market, except for pirates). The suburbs are for pirate families, though...they're very rare. >

o Flora/Fauna:

< none, besides zoos and pets. >

o Laws/Government:

< pirates. What's a government? (Jk, they're lead by Neon-Beard, and his sons and daughters.) They have their own pirate code to follow. They're actually very organized, with each ship having its own hierarchy and such.

o History:

< pirates needed a home, a base of operations--the dead, overlooked moon (now called Shanty) was the perfect place. They put down anchor, dragged things over, built; pirates gathered what they needed (and it was easy--they had so many things to put down). It became a beautiful neon mish-mash of everything, and now, it's a fortified planet with a rich culture and many people beneath, a safe haven for anyone and everyone.

Neon-Beard rules, but he's gone missing (and has been with the rest of his crew and his ship, the Neon Pearl, for the last 9 months); his many sons and daughters, each from different women, are now vying for that 'crown' of sorts. It's unclear what will happen to them. They're basically royalty. >

"Beaut."

(formerly Pulchritudo)

(Used to be named the Latin word for beauty, but it was renamed to "Beaut" as in, "She's a beaut, isn't she")

<a planet once ruled by the East, representing a mix of Europe as a whole, that was taken over by pirates in a standoff. Turns out pirates loved it so much that they never gave it back.

it's a beautiful, fairytale-like city, full of marble and intricacies and culture. It's the center for arts and broadway, with stained glass churches and magic everywhere. The "Beautians" are unhappy with the case--they fought back at first, but pirates slaughtered them in the street. Now, the rest are quiet and "happy" to have the company.

The planet has four seasons, mostly cold ones, and is rainy and cloudy--but the small period of summer once had tourists come. Now, it's for the pirates; they're taking what they can, but keeping the beauty. The entitled (now-)'Beautians' have fled, for the most part, leaving the city a husk of what it once was.
