"Jesus Christ," I sighed as my teacher lectured the class on a new lesson. Math had never made much sense to me, even in middle school and much earlier life, the concepts of using numbers and somehow connecting that to real life just... didn't click. So, you can only imagine what it's like taking Algebra 2 as a person who didn't even understand Algebra one. Sure, I can remember a formula, but I have no idea how to use it in a practical, or you could say classroom, setting.

His words practically went in one ear, mixed around my brain like a sock in a dryer, and then came right out the other. None of if stuck. All I could do was write down what he was saying and look at it later and pray. Pray to God that I could miraculously learn math and not fail this year. However, I had a sneaking suspicion that that would get me nowhere.

"Anyone have any questions?" Mr. Dannis asked, to which nobody responded. I, of course, had lots of questions. I could probably ask a hundred just about the last five minutes, but because I'm the wuss I am, I stayed quiet and shook my head just like everyone else in the room.

God I wish I didn't have any questions.

He began talking about the homework next, as kids started chatting amongst themselves. Kristy was on Instagram on her phone across the room, but Mr. Dannis didn't see or care in the slightest. As long as you're passing his class, he doesn't care what you do while you're there.

"Your homework tonight will be pages 279-282 questions 1-14, 17-30 even, 42-48, 50, and 60-79, due Friday." I groaned just at the thought of doing all those problems, writing it down in my planner quickly.

Kristy didn't pick up her fancy pink glitter pen that she always used a single time the whole class. To be honest though, I can't say I'm surprised. All she does at school is go to class to be on her phone doing God knows what on her phone, make out with her boyfriend, the captain of the football team, during lunch, get the homework answers and notes from other kids, and then be a complete ho during cheer practice.

Like, seriously, does she not realize that the point of practice is to get better, not make everyone look at your ass. Sure, it might be a good one, (as embarrassed as I may be to say so, she actually had a very nice body), but it got kind of annoying after a while- her trying to show it off all the time. Like honey, at this point, I've seen much more of you than I ever wanted to. And yet she keeps trying to show us more.

I pack up my stuff as the bell rings and people run out the door, boys yelling and flinging stuff at each other as they raced to the lunch lines. Mr. Dannis just sighed and sat at his desk, beginning to grade the quizzes we took yesterday.

"Sawyer, could you come over here for a second?" He asked, not looking up from his papers. My stomach dropped. I knew this was about my grades. I was barely clinging onto a D, which by the way, is not a passing grade. I stepped up to his desk.

"I'm sure you've already realized, but you have a D in this class. Just barely, too. I know you've been struggling all year, but this is exceptionally bad. Even for you. Is something going on at home or anything you need help with that is hindering your academics?" I sighed quietly.

"No. I'm fine. I'm just not doing well this semester." I stared simply. It was the truth; partly at least. But he didn't need to know the other half of the story. He nodded.

"Ok. You can go now."

"Thank you sir." He didn't respond as I walked out the door, slowly making my way towards the cafeteria. I reached the doors and could already hear the noise from the outside. I pushed the doors open, allowing the sounds of people yelling and screaming, fighting, throwing things, and making overly loud obnoxious noises was over me and fill my ears.

It took a few moments of scanning over the various types of people in the crowded room- from cheerleaders acting like ho's at their table to the quiet kids doing their homework and giggling across the table at each other, to your typical jocks who were being bros and talking loudly and shoving each other, and everything in between- to find my squad. A bit of a misfit bunch, but we were thick as thieves and like a real family. I let out a gentle sigh as I began walking over to them, passing a group of couples being overly touchy for a school setting.

Then again, what can I say? I lived in a typical teen movie town and went to your typical movie school with your typical movie cliques; I guess you could say I'm your typical lower school rank class main character, but that would imply that I was pretty and was an 'unexpected' love interest for a hot jock boy, and that was totally out of the picture.

I gently sighed again as I took my seat next to my friends.

Welcome to Brookfield high.
