get it straight - spendtime palace
lucas and max walked me to lucas' house, which was in the upper class neighborhood. max sat me down on the couch as lucas disappeared behind a door.
"do you need anything?" max asked me quietly.
"a little water please..." i mumbled, staring at the wall.
numb. that's how i feel. numb all over, especially my heart.
max nodded and walked to the kitchen. i heard the sink running, and i put my head back. someone slammed their fist on the door, as lucas returned from wherever he went.
"who is it?" i murmured to no one in particular, putting my head in my hands. lucas looked out the peep hole as max sat next to me.
"it's will. he must've heard." the tall boy swung open the front door, revealing a very red faced boy.
"this is why i didn't want you to date that asshole! he goes and fucking cheats on you after he takes your virg-" will raged, storming into lucas' front door. max put her hand out in front of me as a barrier.
"dude, she doesn't need to hear this right now!" max scolded. will sighed and sat on the other side of me.
"i'm sorry sis." he whispered and hugged me tightly. i hugged him back, a few tears falling. max sighed and joined in on our hug. there was another loud knock at the door, causing will to pull away and stand up. "who's that?" he asked lucas. lucas glanced out the window and his brown eyes widended.
"oh fuck, it's him."
him. the boy who i thought loved and cared for me.
i stiffened, and max, who was still sitting with me, grabbed my hand and pulled me up the stairs. we sat on the landing out of view of the front door.
i peeked my head around the wall, so i could see the front door. lucas pulled the door open, revealing the pale boy who i fell in love with. his curly hair was sticking up at random angles, like someone ran their hands through it too many times.
i should have been the one to run my hands through that mess of adorable curls.
his leather jacket had marks of red on it, lining the collar and the shoulder.
i should have been the one to put lipstick on his collar. at least i have the decency to wipe it off, that jacket is his favorite thing ever, only coming after his music.
"w-where is she?! where the hell is my girl?!" mike yelled, trying to get past the two boys standing in the doorway. lucas stuck his arm out to prevent him from coming in.
"go away mike, she's not gonna talk to you. not after that royal fuck-up, rockhead." will growled, shoving mike backwards towards the street.
"don't talk to her, or us. you cheated mike. you broke one of the party's rules." lucas sneered. mike stumbled back, his eyes glancing to the staircase and me.
"elle..." he said, and i flipped him the bird.
"fuck you asshole!" i replied in a harsh voice.
that was scary. can i be scary?
"go fuck yourself!" max laughed as lucas slammed the door in mike's face. i began crying on max's shoulder again.
my first love. gone before i could even blink. i always assumed we would end up together, but i guess not.
i heard whispering as max rubbed my back in a steady motion.
"you know, break-ups can lead to other good things. i was dating this other guy, matt, but when he broke up with me i found lulu, and now we've been dating for six months!" she told me.
"but max, i felt like...like...like he was the one. lucas is the one for you, but...i could see us together in the future..." i whispered. max just hugged me tighter. i heard the front door slowly open, and then i saw my best friend standing in front of me and max.
"hey, i heard what happened. i'm sorry elle." he sighed. i shakily wiped my tears.
"thanks dusty..." i breathed.
"well, i'm gonna hang out with the boys. since we don't have a paladin anymore, do you want to be it?" dustin asked.
"the what?" i asked, making both max and dustin laugh.
"the paladin. in dungeons and dragons. come on, we can show you." dustin smiled, showing me the gap between his teeth.
~~~six months later~~~
will and i jumped out of dustin's mom's station wagon, both of us waving goodbye.
"bye mrs. henderson, have a good day!" i smiled. mrs. henderson waved back and drove away just as dustin got out.
"i swear, she likes you two better than me. and i'm her son!" dustin complained, making will laugh.
"but the real question is, does she know i fly the rainbow flag?" he asked, wiggling his eyebrows. dustin shrugged.
"i dunno man, i honestly don't think she cares." dustin said as we walked to the front doors. groups of kids stood together, talking loudly. there was one group i hoped weren't around.
"come on, we're already late enough. let's get to class before we see them." will shuddered, and i nodded in agreement.
"who's ready for some math?!" i cheered with fake enthusiasm as we made our way to class.
mike's in this class. crud.
i sighed and put my bag on the chair next to me, saving the seat for max as i watched the door for her arrival. a familiar head of curls walked through the door, and i quickly put my head down to avoid catching his eye. my bag was placed on my lap, and i breathed a sigh of relief.
"ma-" i looked up to see my ex-boyfriend sitting next to me. "what the hell are you doing?" i asked, crossing my arms.
"sitting here." he snapped, propping his feet up on the desk.
"asshole." i muttered, putting my bag on the floor next to me.
"oh, little baby elle swears now, aye?" mike laughed. i turned my head to face him.
"if you stuck around instead of kissing that whore, you would have realized that i've changed after meeting you."
"in a good or bad way?"
"both." i replied, picking up my bag and storming out the door.

what elle didn't realize was mike was there to explain. what mike told his new friend bill was correct; he was six months too late to fix elle's broken heart.
