Spot was in the habit of never owing anyone anything. If he needed something, he made sure to pay for it in full right away. But Racetrack never insisted on collecting a return, so a person's debt to him stretched on forever, giving Race all the power. If there was one thing Spot hated, it was a loss of power. And so he had vowed to never, ever be in the position of owing Racetrack a favor. No matter what.
