The alarm on your iPod began to go off. You had been watching the countdown and was ready to turn it off so it didn't ring for long. The Jane bot had been right. While the alarm rang the ship was landing. Now you could see crystal blue water and a calm sky outside of the window. The Jane bots came back into the room and began to usher everyone out the back ramp. You stood and grabbed your belongings before following Will, Rae, and Erin out.
"This is so exciting!" Erin chirped as she clapped her hands, "We're like on a whole other planet!"
"Took you this long to figure that out?" Rae scoffed.
You frowned at Rae again. You just didn't understand why she was so rude. Since boarding the ship you hadn't seen her smile once.
"Please follow us out and watch your step on the dock." One of the Jane's said. Your eyes widened at the sight before you. The ship had landed in a bay of sorts. The Island itself was gorgeous.
The shore's sand was soft and white. Every plant you saw seemed to be bursting with life. It was a tropical paradise. As you walked down the dock you glanced at the water in both sides of you. It was crystal clear and you could see the floor. The water was calm and waves gently brushed the shore line. Up ahead was a plaza of sorts. A white marble and tan brick area was built into the sand. It was in the shape of a huge circle and in the middle of that circle was a large fountain. The fountain was made of white marble as well, but it was turned off.
"Welcome to Moonlight Bay Plaza!"
Everyone stepped off the dock and walked the few remaining feet so they could stand on the concrete circle. Past the fountain there were many red gazebos set up with tables set underneath them. Beyond that there were other colored gazebos set up as well.
"The first test preformed is our medical screening. Please line up at one of the red gazebos."
You were pushed forward to one of the gazebos. It was one of the middle ones and you were second in line. The guy in front of you stepped under the gazebo and sat at the table. A man in a white medical jacket walked over and sat across from him. You were star struck for a moment at the man's charming good looks. He had a nice jaw line, sandy blonde hair combed neatly to the side, and site dimples every time he smiled. You glanced over at the other tables and noticed a trend. All the doctors looked the same. You frowned and let out a sigh. Dr. Handsome was just another robot.
About 10 minutes passed before the guy who was in front of you left and you were motioned forward. You set your bag on the ground and sat in front of him.
"Good afternoon miss." His voice was smooth, but after realizing he was a robot all appeal towards him was lost. "How are you feeling today?"
"Fine thanks."
"Your name is?"
"Oh", You said, "I'm [Name] [Surname]."
He nodded his head but kept his steady gaze on you. Just like the Jane bot who had interviewed you, it was like everything you told him he just stored in his robotic mind.
"Nice to meet you [Name]. I am Dr. Three."
"So they didn't even give you guys names? Just a number?" You asked.
He ignored you and took a hold of your hand. His hand was cold and you couldn't help but squirm in your seat uncomfortably. Finally he let go and frowned.
"Your health seems in check but I couldn't help notice the cut on your ankle."
"Yeah", You glanced down at Cid's handkerchief that was wrapped around it, "I cut it on the ship."
"That has brought risk upon Decoris Island. Blood is an easy way of spreading disease and sickness. You were not checked out before the cut meaning you could have brought danger upon the island."
"It was just a small cut." You reasoned, "And I wasn't even on Earth when it happened."
"By bringing danger upon the island you break Rule 9 Code 37. You will be forced to return home."
"Wait what?!"
"By bringing danger upon the island you break Rule 9 Code 37. You will be forced to return home."
"That isn't fair! It was an accident I didn't mean to-"
A different man jogged over and pulled Dr. Three out of his seat, "Go help Dr. Nine. That's an order."
"Yes Doctor." Dr. Three turned and left.
The new guy that ran over didn't look like the other doctors. His blonde hair was spiked up and he had bright blue eyes that seemed alive. He wasn't wearing one of the white doctor jackets, but he wore something similar to what Dr. Three was wearing underneath. A white button up shirt and red tie. His shirt sleeves were rolled up to his elbows and he also had on a pair of khaki dress pants.
"Hey sorry about that." He took a seat where Dr. Three just was.
"You aren't a robot are you?" You blurted out.
The man laughed and shook his head, "No I'm the head Doctor at Decoris Island Hospital. My name is Cloud."
You nodded, "I'm [Name]. Am I really going to have to leave the island?"
Cloud shook his head, "No of course not. Robots don't bend rules."
"Do you?"
He smiled and moved his chair so he sat right in front of you, “Let me see your leg."
You lifted your leg up so he could see. Cloud grabbed your foot and moved your leg so it was resting on his thigh. As he untied the handkerchief his fingers brushed across your ankle. You blushed lightly and thanked God that you had shaved your legs.
"Is this Cid's?" He asked.
"Yeah I was walking with him when I got cut. Do you know him?"
"Yeah", Cloud chuckled and set the handkerchief on the table, "We're from the same world. He's a close friend of mine too."
Cloud was quiet for a moment as he examined your cut. You glanced at it and your eyes widened again. It had healed shut completely and was now only a faint pink line.
Cloud looked over at the handkerchief and saw all the blood. He frowned.
"When did you cut your leg?"
You shrugged, "Like an hour ago at the most."
"Do you have a healing ability?"
"Cid mentioned something about asking a doctor if I had one. I don't know if I do though."
Cloud gave you a soft smile, "I think you might [Name]."
"What is it exactly?"
Cloud set your leg down and pulled a pocket knife out of his pocket. You straightened yourself and tensed at the sight of the sharp blade. Cloud held the blade in the palm of his hand and closed his hand around the sharp metal. When he opened his hand again all you saw was his bright red blood. You blinked and cleared your mind of your bloody flashback.
"Keep watching." Cloud murmured. You glanced up at his eyes to see him staring straight at you. You tore your gaze away and watched in awe as his wound healed itself.
"That's amazing." You breathed.
"That's what we think you have." Cloud smirked. He wiped the blood away with Cid's handkerchief. "That's all for your health screening though. I'll mark down that you passed."
You stood and shook Cloud's hand, "Thanks Cloud."
"No problem. It was nice meeting you [Name]."
A Jane bot walked over and folded he hands neatly in front of her. She smiled her bright, creepy smile and said, "Dr. Strife, you're needed at Station 2."
Cloud nodded and began to leave when a female voice grabbed his attention from behind you. You turned around to see Rae smiling sweetly at Cloud. She gracefully stepped forward.
"What about my health screening, Dr. Strife?" Rae said in a sickly sweet voice. She batted her long eye lashes and took a step closer so she was right beside Cloud. Rae reached out, set a hand on his shoulder, and then looked up at him though her eyelashes.
"Oh well um-" Cloud coughed as a spray of pink splashed across his cheeks, "Dr. Three should be back soon. I'm sorry."
Rae put a pouting look on her face and nodded, "Ok well maybe we can see each other later?"
Cloud paused before shrugging, "You do realize I'm 23 correct?"
"Dr. Strife, you're needed at Station 2." The Jane bot repeated then she turned to look at you, "You can follow me to the measuring station."
Cloud gave you and Rae one more passing smile before leaving. Rae's smile fell and it was then when you realized how good of an actress she really could be.
"Please follow me." The Jane bot urged. You grabbed your stuff then followed her away from the red gazebo to a blue one a few yards away. There was another Doctor bot waiting there. You dropped your stuff on the ground by the table again.
"Good afternoon. My name is Dr. Thirteen. What is your name?"
"I'm [Name] [Surname]."
He nodded and ushered you forward. You stepped under the gazebo nervously. Dr. Thirteen came forward checked you out. Even though you knew he was a robot you couldn't help but squirm under his unread stare.
"I believe you are exactly [Your Height]. Does that sound correct?"
You nodded your head. He kneeled down on the ground and laid his hand on the ground flat. "Take off your shoes and please stand on my hand."
"Excuse me?" You questioned.
"Take off your shoes and please stand on my hand."
You slipped out of your shoes and hesitantly stepped onto his hand. You stood there completely still for a moment before he pulled his hand out from under you nearly making you fall backwards.
"You weigh [Your weight]. Does that sound correct?"
"Umm yeah. It does." You slipped your shoes back on. Suddenly he reached out and grabbed your ankle. You let out a cry of surprise. Just out if natural reaction you used your other leg to kick him onto his back.
"Ow!" You yelled as you pulled your leg back. It felt like you just kicked a metal block which wasn't very surprising now that you thought about it.
Dr. Thirteen sat back up but looked unfazed. He kneeled back down in front of you as if that hadn't just happened. "Please let me see your foot. I need to measure that as well."
You slowly lifted your foot off the ground nervously. You were hoping that robots didn't feel the need for revenge because you wanted your foot back in one piece. He took your shoe off and gazed at your foot awkwardly.
"Size [Shoe Size]. Does that sound correct?"
You quickly nodded and pulled your foot away. In one quick motion you slipped your shoe back on.
"Last thing I need is a picture and your signature." He smiled at you, "Say cheese."
You waited for him to grab a camera but he didn't. You smiled nervously, "Cheese?"
He blinked his eyes and you heard the sound of a camera going off. That was pretty weird. He flipped his arm over and pulled out a tablet pen. One of the ones that has the end meant for a touch screen.
"Please sign here." He pointed to a blank area on his arm. You leaned forward and signed the area on his arm. This was even weirder. You handed him back the one and he smiled brightly at you. "That will be all Miss [Surname]."
You grabbed your bag and ran out from under the gazebo. You weren't sure where to go after that so you headed back towards the fountain where a crowd was forming. It seemed like it was the right place because a few different Jane bots littered the area as if waiting for everyone to join them. After a few moments of standing there gazing at the scenery around you the Jane boys began to walk around passing out devices. Finally one of the bots handed you yours. In your hands was a white iPhone. Obviously it wasn't really an iPhone, but it looked just like it. You flipped it over to look for the Apple insignia, but instead you saw a black circle.
"These are your new cellular devices. They work only with the Decoris Island signals. Your old phones will not work here. Also with these devices you can access the D.I. Communications System. That is where you can read other island citizen's comments if they post them. Before you can read someone's comments and/or journal though you have to scan their ID bracelet." The Jane bot speaking paused and smiled, "These ID bracelets will be passed out now."
You figured it'd take a while to get the right bracelets to everyone but it actually didn't. Each Jane bot was handed a bracelet then she walked straight towards whoever it belonged to. The fact that any Jane bot could pinpoint you out of a crowd of about 60 people scared you. She grabbed your left wrist and clipped on a metal bracelet. You examined it after she walked away. It was a metal ring that was super thin but about an inch wide. The ring was silver in color except one inch in the ring was bright red.
"Do not worry about getting these wet. They are waterproof! Do not attempt to take them off though. You will regret it." The Jane bot smiled sweetly as if she hadn't sounded threatening at all. "Now on your new phone there is a program called D.I. Communication. If you activate this program then whenever you come close to another citizen your phone will instantly read their ID bracelet and youll not only recieve their phone number but you will also be able to see any posts they type."
"Sounds a lot like Facebook if you ask me." Will commented. You jumped at the sound if his voice and turned around. He stood behind you with a mocking smile.
"Now we want you to enjoy your time on our Island but there are a few rules you must follow." The Jane bot never removed her over exaggerated smile, "There is a curfew in effect at 10:00 PM during the week and on the weekend that curfew is extended to 11:00 PM. Stealing is prohibited and murder is frowned upon."
"Where isn't murder frowned upon?" You muttered under your breath.
"By signing your name you have agreed to follow all our laws and regulations. You also agreed to be a responsible young adult. That is all for our orientation! Now if you go to the green gazebos then you can convert your money over to our currency and select an apartment to live in. Thank you."
There was a mad rush towards the green gazebos. You chose to take your time and just wait patiently and apparently so did Will. He smirked and crossed his arms over his broad chest. "So..."
"So?" You shot back at him. You took a seat at the edge of fountain.
"So I'm thinking you and I should grab lunch or something. Maybe a coffee?"
You gave him a smile and shook your head, "No thanks buddy."
Will looked surprised. You glanced away from him and turned on your new phone. It opened a main menu page where you could choose either to call someone, text someone, or access the Internet. One button was labeled D.I Communications. You pressed it and the button disappeared. A moment later a new app looking button appeared. You pressed your finger to it again and it opened up a new program.
'One New Number Added!'
You pressed the words and Will's photo popped up. You watched as his number was sorted into your contact list. It was the only number you had so far. Will was staring down at his phone as well. You stood and grabbed your bag.
"Later Will." You said and walked away.
You heard Will call after you once but you kept walking towards the green gazebo. There was one table open so you rushed toward it. A lady sat at the table. She had short blonde hair cut in a pixie style and big green eyes. Judging by her creepy smile you figured she was a robot too.
"Good Afternoon! My name is Debby2. I will help you!"
You nodded and sat down, "Yupp a robot."
"Do you have any money you need converted?" She asked, "One American Earth dollar equals 2 Lamnas here."
You pulled the envelope of money out of your duffel bag, "I have $10,000."
"Great", She took the envelope and put it in a safe under the table. Debby2 took out a bag and pulled out a white plastic card. "[Name] [Surname], this will be a credit card of sorts."
"I don't remember telling you my name..."
She giggled, "I read it off your profile silly."
You swallowed a lump that had formed in your throat and watched as stuck the card into a black machine. It whirred for a few moments then she pulled it out.
"Here you go. You now have 20,000 Lamnas."
You took the card in your hand. It was still white but now there was a black stripe going across the middle and your name was typed out in red. Debby2 pulled out pictures and papers and set them on the table.
"Now where would you like to stay? We have Oceanside apartments such as the The Wave." She motioned towards a picture of a tan building with many windows. It was literally on the beach. "It's 2000 Lamnas a week."
"Umm do you have anything a bit cheaper?" You asked. You didn't want to throw all your money away on just an apartment.
"We also have an apartment building more inland. It is fairly close to Nova Vita Academy." She pointed to a picture of a two story white building. The front was painted with pictures of the four seasons and the middle of the building was cut in two. It was separated with a pool. "It is called The Four Seasons. You can stay here for only 300 Lamnas a week."
You nodded, "Alright. I like this one."
"Would you care to look at the deals? We have citizens already living there who are offering deals."
"Sure. Like what?"
She tilted her head and looked frozen for a minute. Then her eyes refocused on you and she fixed the angle of her head. "There is a four bedroom apartment room in the building. Two women are already living there and they are offering to split the rent."
"Umm ok do I get to meet them or-"
"Great! You have now accepted their offer!"
"But I wasn't entirely sure yet-"
"Please follow Jane25 on the motorized vehicle. She will take you to the Four Seasons."
"But I-"
"Have a nice day!"
You grabbed your belongings and stormed away. Sitting in a golf cart looking vehicle was a Jane bot. You assumed she was Jane25. You took the seat beside her and she began to drive away. She drove through the large arch leading away from Moonlight Bay Plaza and down a paved road. You stared in awe at the scenery. As she drove further into the island you noticed people walking around talking and just hanging out.
"It's so beautiful here." You murmured as she drove past a crowded skate park.
"Yes. We have the island set to Summer still. We will change the setting to Fall sometime during September."
"Change the setting? Wait the Island is man made?"
"Why of course!" She gushed, "The Island, the system, and us robots were all created by the Creator!"
"Who's the Creator?" You asked.
She smiled, "He's the creator of all!"
"Yeah I got that part. Who is he though?"
"Why, he's the creator of all the island and-"
"You know what? Never mind." You sighed and sat back in your seat. You made a mental note to avoid trying to hold conversations with the local robots. A moment after making that mental note you could see the Four Seasons come into view. It looked just like the photo and you were immediately impressed. Hopefully your roommates weren't psychotic.
