"hey, mom?" he shovels a spoonful of chili into his mouth.
she looks up, dumping half a bag of oyster crackers into her bowl. his dad is working late, which makes it the perfect opportunity to ask her. "yes?"
"i want to meet up with someone... could i leave around nine? i'll be home around nine-thirty, i promise."
she seems suspicious by his vagueness, but sighs reluctantly. "i guess so, but only because your grades have been really high."
a grin threatens to make its way to his cheeks, but he holds it back.
"is this girl special to you?" she holds his gaze.
he almost chokes, gulping down some water. "yeah, something like that."
