Phiona

I was getting ready for school when Claudia came back into the living room with me. We had both fell asleep on the couch last night.

"Phiona it's that time once again." Claudia said. I sighed knowing exactly what she was talking about.

"Alright. I'll take a double shift tonight okay?" I asked.

"Sweetie no.." Claudia said.

"We need the money Mama C. Please, let me help." I said. She sighed, tears coming to her eyes.

"You do so much for us.. thank you Phiona." Claudia said. I weakly smiled.

"I care for y'all, I'll be okay. Just as long as you and the children eat." I explained. She nodded her head and hugged me, sending me off on my way to school.

What we talked about? We ran out of money to buy groceries. That's what, so I'll be working a second shift tonight at the grocery store. It has strict limits, so I really can't just grab things for myself. I do care for the kids and Mama Claudia more than myself though. I work like this for them. They need to eat. I swear living like this is so hard.

I arrived at the school and walked in. Immediately going to creative writing. I walked in to see Brice already about to make fun of me. I quickly took my seat, putting my hair in my face avoiding everyone. I heard the laughs and voices of those jerks as I sat there. I wasn't scared of them, I just couldn't take their mess.

"Alright class. Time to announce partners." Mr. Dupri said standing in front of the class. He started out naming the partners.

"Brice and Nate." Mr. Dupri said. Brice groaned.

"I don't want to be with him bruh." Brice said. I rolled my eyes, that whole group are the rudest to Nate, but he still believes he's their friend. I waited and waited for my name to be called, I was not paying attention to anyone else's partner. Only mine.

"And lastly... Jay and Phiona." Mr. Dupri said. "Take a seat by your partner." he said. I felt my eyes widen. The guy I dreaded being with most, is now my partner.

"Wait. Who in the hell is that?" Jay asked. I rolled my eyes, lowering my head.

"You know man. Shrek's wife?" Brice laughed. Jay laughed as well.

"Ahhm Brice get to work.." Mr. Dupri cleared his throat. "Jay...your partner Phiona is right over there." Mr. Dupri pointed me out sending me a warm smile. I weakly smiled back.

Jay looked over at me, with a disgusted look on his face.

"Shrek and Phiona!" Brice yelled. Everyone laughed. Jay flipped him off as he made his way over to me.

I scooted my things over, letting him take a seat next to me. I continued hiding my face from him though. I felt his eyes burning a hole through the side of my head. I turned to look at him.

"You ain't gon' talk or nothin'?" Jay asked. I simply shrugged not wanting to say anything. He chuckled and casually licked his lips turning his attention back to the front of the classroom.

I slouched back in my seat feeling embarrassed. I took a deep breath as class continued. Mr. Dupri then gave us a small assignment to do with our partner.

"Yo Dupri! Why you put me with her, she stupid as hell." Jay exclaimed to the teacher.

"You'd be surprised Mr. Latimore, the girl has knowledge." Mr. Dupri smirked. Jay looked at me and rolled his eyes.

"So Phiona huh?" Jay asked. I nodded my head, still silent. He had been trying to get me to talk all block, but I wouldn't budge. Let's see what else he has to say. "Shrek's wife... which one, the princess or the oger?" Jay asked. I heard laughs beginning to travel.

I looked at him, feeling the hatred for him burn deeply.

"That's enough, stop talking." I said. He looked at me, eyes expanded like he was somewhat surprised but he started laughing.

"The fuck are you gonna do if I don't shorty?" he asked. I rolled my eyes and turned my attention back to my work. "That's what I thought." he mumbled.

I was on the verge of tears, but none slipped, surprisingly.

The bell rang and I made my way to my next class. Happy to be out of there, but I had to meet him again after school in the library. I had to prepare myself to deal with his mess. All talk and what not. Having him as my partner better teach me a lesson, or else it would just be worthless.

Jacob

The last bell of the school day rang and I made my way to the library to meet up with my new geeky looking ass partner, Phiona. I could already tell she didn't like me. Well shit, she ain't on my favorites list neither. She was quiet as a church mouse this morning, which irked my fucking nerves. Like bitch talk! She was probably scared of me like everybody else, but I noticed something about her. She didn't act scared.

My thoughts were rumbled when I heard a soft voice that I had only heard say four words before. I turned to see Phiona standing before me with her text books and what not.

"Let's go in." she spoke softly, she had quite an angelic voice.

I shook my head as we walked in. Me, being an ass, didn't hold that heavy ass door open. She followed behind me, quickly catching it as it was about to close. I laughed at how quick she was.

"Wow, what a gentleman."I heard her mumble. I rolled my eyes as we took a seat at the table. "So.. what are we going to do for this project?" Phiona asked.

"I don't care." I said.

"Of course you don't." she sighed opening up one of her books. I stared at her. "What?" she asked looking up.

"Why don't you like me?" I asked.

"I never said that." she mumbled.

"You ain't have to. It's written all over yo face." I spat. She flinched, wiping some of the spit that flew onto her cheek from my mouth off.

"So disrespectful." she said.

"Ha. You think I give a fuck." I said. I spun around in the wheeled chairs we sat in.

"Rude.." she shook her head. I chuckled at how she tried to accuse me of all these names. "Can't you take things seriously for at least once in your life?" Phiona asked.

"Life is just a game shorty.." I said.

"No it's not." she sternly said. I looked to her to see her glaring at me. I looked into her deep big brown eyes, they were pretty.... and what the fuck am I thinking? I shook out of my thoughts.

"Is too, we're all playing it. There's really no important reason for us to be here, we're all gonna die one day anyways." I explained.

"We have a life to make something out of ourselves and it. Now I don't know what you are doing, but I do know what I'm doing. It's important, and yeah I know we're all going to die some day but we should at least be thankful." Phiona explained. She was standing now.

"Thankful for what? The parents that screw over their own damn children? Living them with nothing? Hell no! That's absolute bullshit. And I don't know who the hell you are, but you damn sure ain't gon' tell me how to live." I exclaimed.

"Everyone has their problems in life. You gotta learn to deal with it. And don't yell in my face like I'm some bitch, go run to your mother and have her teach you how to treat a lady." Phiona spat. That word absolutely broke my heart, mother. What mother?

"Well go run to your fucking father and have him teach you not to use bad language, daddy's girls are always angels. But not you, bitch." I spat back. She stared at me taking a deep breath. I could see the hurt in her eyes, but I really didn't give a fuck after what she just said to me.

"You know what, it's whatever. You can either stop being a dick and help me with this project or keep being one and continue to skip classes, because at the end of the day I got one less problem without you." Phiona explained. I stood there, comprehending everything she just said. My anger was at it's high at this point, I wanted to beat the shit out of her.

"What's it gonna be, Jacob?" Phiona asked. The fuck she just call me?

"It's Jay-" I was cut off.

"Shut the hell up. I'm not as stupid as you think I am. I have more knowledge than what you think or thought I had." she explained.

"Whatever.." I said grabbing my things.

"Goodbye then." I heard her say.

I walked out of there.

I felt a presence surrounding me as I sat there on the curb of the street. I looked all around me and finally spotted someone. Phiona. She was walking, to where? I'm not sure. I stared at her then she stopped at a small building. She went up the stairs to a small apartment.

I furrowed my eyebrows. How does someone like her live there? Maybe, me saying something about her father put so much hurt in her eyes for a reason. What if she didn't have a father... or mother? Like me.

I stood up and walked to a different destination. I began to think about what she said. I was either going to stop being a dick or not. Everyone knowing me knew that I could honestly not give zero fucks, but this chick... she actually got the audacity to stand up to a nigga like me. She didn't look scared or nothin' and to be real... no one has actually given me an honest explanation to take life seriously.

It got darker and darker so I decided to make my way to the park bench. When I arrived, I slid my hoodie off, balling it up into what looked somewhat like a pillow. I laid down, trying to get as comfortable as I could. I was thinking about not going to school tomorrow, but something was telling me I really needed to.

°°

I guess life isn't a game after all... but the problems will never be completely solved nor go away.
