Chapter Two

Gabriella Monte Robinson

"Wake up, gorgeous. Wake up... Oh come on, Just wake up already!" Someone shook my left shoulder rapidly.

My eyes fluttered open and my body immediately shot up looking at my surroundings in full on alert. Seeing that I was still in the graveyard, in front of my father's grave. I stood up and pat the dry dirt off my jeans. I popped my knuckles as a habit that I do a lot when I just wake up. I yawned and stretched my arms and legs a bit as I leaned back. A loud crack met my ears, indicating I popped my back successfully.

I turned my head back up to meet dark brown eyes that belonged to this stranger. Realizing he saw my little 'show' I felt slightly embarrassed. He had brown hair that spiked, faded blue jeans and a regular white t-shirt. The 'good boy' type as others call it. "Who are you?" I asked quietly, wiping where my dry tears were, hopping he wouldn't notice.

In the town Harshley, which is here, we know everyone, it only had about six-hundred people living in it and a lot of that number went to my high school and the middle school. Harshley was the town for orphans. So it was normal to hear that your new friend happened to be living with your neighbor for a few years until they turn eighteen and can go off on their own. In fact, I was an orphan. Well, known to the state as an orphan. We still haven't found out if my mother is actually dead. I was born here, in a beautiful home by the woods and a gorgeous glimmering lake. I had a very happy life, I still do. But there is always that whole in my heart where my parents belonged. They were in my heart, yes. But it has become only a shadow of memories.

When we heard news of my mother, my father said that one day, someone would help me see better about the situation. Someone I loved just as much, or even more, than my mother and father. Of course at that time, I didn't care to think about that. At least I had my father to help me through those hard times without my mother. But when he died years later, I thought my world had just been shattered. No one knows what really happened to my mother that day when she went for a walk in the woods. She shouldn't have been alone. And I'm sure she probably went too far in the woods. But there was no trail marks after one point. Like she had been snatched up into the air. No animal marks to show that something got her from the side. That is the worse part. I don't know what happened to her. She could be alive, she could be dead. She could have gotten lost somehow, in the woods. I don't know if I'll ever find out though.

When the funeral was over for my father, I went to stay with my grandmother. She was the mother of my father, she had been through events like the deaths in my family as well. Her father died in a mine explosion, her mother was killed in a car accident. Her husband, Joseph, died when on a business trip to India. They say there was poison in his veins that caused his heart to stop beating. We can only hope these deaths were only accidents. Our family goes on and on with rare and bazaar deaths. Only few died of old age. So you can be positive, that we are on our guard to strangers and anything suspicious.

My family on my mothers side, were all completely normal. They died of old age or sometimes illnesses. Normal illnesses. Nothing like my great-grandfather who went swimming in a pond one Sunday afternoon. His wife and children on the shore, he went to go remove the dirt from his skin and to relax. The children wanted to swim as well. But my great-grandmother didn't want them to catch colds due to the water being freezing. He went underwater, to swim of course. After a few minutes, of course the mother and children were getting very scared something might have happened. But he was known as a prankster, so they thought maybe he was trying to scare them. After ten minutes, the mother was very worried, and went in herself to get him. She was only met with tears filling her eyes. He had died in the water. He went under and his foot got caught under a rock.

The point is, I am an orphan. Most of my friends are as well. It is like the state wanted to get rid of the orphans and stuff them all here. We have about twelve orphanages. And a lot of people offer their homes. For example, my grandmother and I invite orphans to stay for a few months or weeks before they get taken to their official new homes.

Everyone knows everyone here. So it is very weird to see a stranger that hasn't been introduced yet, maybe he is an orphan. I don't recognize him in the least bit and I haven't heard news of any new orphan coming. So of course with my history and everything with the strange deaths and all, I was completely on guard.

The boy smiled and extended his hand out for me to shake, "Zayn William Bush." He said trying to be friendly. His smile altered a tiny bit when he saw I was staring at him as if I were to pounce and in the end, maybe kill him. I was acting as my nature told me to. Do not trust strangers. I offered a plastered fake smile but I started moving my feet in a sprinting position so I could possibly have a head start if he turned on me suddenly. He noticed and stepped back a few steps, noting my threatening narrowed eyes.

After minutes of silence, I realized I was just over reacting. He is probably just a confused orphan, and I am probably scaring him. I nodded slowly, "Nice to meet you." I said trying a friendly and welcoming tone, but when getting to the 'you' I had already turned around sharply and began striding towards the woods.

As I was passing the trees and bushes, I could hear Zayn behind me, following me. I bit my lip. I knew I was getting scared at this point. "Not to be rude, but I should be going home. So, what do you want?" I asked but continued my pace.

"Your name?" He asked coolly like it was no big deal. It really wasn't a big deal, but he was making me nervous. You don't just go around following strangers and you defiantly don't want strangers following you.

I sighed inwardly as my speed kicked two times faster. "Gabriella Monte Robinson." With that, I turned off the path and ran down the steep hill and sped through the abandoned woods. Trash was everywhere, so I only walked to the side of the trash, to not make too much noise. After walking for about ten minutes, I think he's totally gone. I looked over my shoulder and let out a sigh in pure relief.

That is when I ran into someone. The second I saw his face, I opened my mouth to scream. He put his hand over my mouth and pulled us behind a bush. We crouched down, and I gave him a confused expression, hoping to get some explanation.

He just pointed towards the road and sure enough, Zayn started walking the way I was going probably trying to follow me for some reason. Once he was gone, we stood up straight. I sighed relieved Zayn was gone. But when I looked up, I was met with concerned and angry eyes.

"Gabriella Robinson, you led him to the woods? That is dangerous for you to be alone, with a stranger, in the woods! And what if he was a good guy? He could get hurt." Ashton folded his arms, showing he was very disappointed.

"He followed me! Also, what is up with you and keeping people away from these woods? It is beautiful out here, and the only danger is maybe a few bugs. And if this place was so bad, then why are you here?" I started strolling down the opposite way Zayn went.

Ash sighed and followed. "If something were to happen to me, I would know how to fix the situation. You can too. But any other normal teenager would just freak out. And there are animals, coyotes. They could be dangerous! And I know how to control them!"

"And how exactly would you control them? Huh?" I stopped to glare at him.

He smiled and answered, "Magic?" it came out more like a question which caused my mood to change and a bright smile crept onto my lips. I laughed and spun away from him, so my back was facing him.

"Why are you so careful? Everything was fine until just two months ago. What happened?" I asked gently, with genuine curiosity.

He started chuckling, which caused me to cross my arms and turn around. I gave him a look like asking what was so funny. "Remember when Dean came into town and you-" He stopped talking instantly as he realized I had frowned as a tear slipped from my left eye. It is strange how all of a sudden a person could change their mood from one second happy and the next sad.

Ashton noticed and wrapped his arms gently around me at that second. I blushed at the sudden contact and smiled, hugging him back. "Thank you, Ash."

"I'm sorry, I forgot about all that happened. Forgive me?" He asked in my ear as he hugged me.

I pulled him off me to hold him by the shoulders, so I could get a good look at his face. He had black hair, deep dark brown eyes and was tall. Taller than me, and I'm pretty tall. He had a large figure, full of muscle and yes, very handsome. The girls at school absolutely adore him. He never seemed to notice, but when he did, he didn't care. He and I have mutual feelings for each other, brother and sister. It has always been that way and always will. I smiled staring at him in the eyes, making sure he knew I was about to say something. "You are in trouble with me. But I guess we will talk about the whole 'you leaving for months then coming back' thing later. So, wanna come over?" I asked, "Grandma is making chicken. And you can't refuse that, now can you?" As I said this, I felt my joy at him being home radiating off of my skin.

He hesitated before answering, "Maybe...Well, actually I... Oh, why not? Sure." He smiled at my and gave me another quick hug. I was a bit curious, he usually never hesitates. Probably just not sure since he just came back, I shrugged the curiosity off.

I jokingly cheered throwing my hands in the air and doing my own little victory dance. "Finally, a best friends night!" I chuckled as I swirled around to face the direction towards my house.

"You didn't miss me that much, did you? I thought all those boys that surround themselves around you would surely keep you busy." He joked, catching up to me and poking one of my right ribs teasingly.

I shivered slightly because it tickled and glared at him. "Don't you go poking me, it could cause serious problems. And oh please! The only guys I ever get are the boys I never like. They are usually the type to not meet a girl's standards. So why worry? And of course I missed you! Missed you too much, in fact."
