Chapter 10:  Facing the truth

Day Walker Code 112- Lying of important matter is punishable by law

Tanner

They got back to school a little before midnight on the next day. After what happened with the sharks, Tanner was more than happy to be back in the safety of their academy.

As he got ready for school the day following their arrival, he couldn’t help but think about how much his body had hurt when he had called back his clones while he and Hayden had been fleeing the sharks. Why did it affect him only after? Could he really die from a wounded clone? It was sad that he knew so little about his power. Well, at least he finally found a use for it. This ability would be useful if ever a war or a big fight was to occur, and Tanner did enjoy a good battle.

....

He had to see her. He finally decided it was time to tell her. The more he hid it from her, the more time that he was losing. He left his room, not bothering to tell his twin where he was going. He crossed campus and entered the building. He climbed up the stairs and walked to the end of the hallway to the last door. He needed to tell her. Tanner knew it was the right thing to do. But why was it so hard? He had talked to her many times before.

Finally, he took a deep breath and knocked on the door. She answered faster than he would have expected.

“Tanner.” She said smiling warmly at him. “What are you doing here so early?”

For a moment he didn’t know what to say. She was right, what was he doing here? Maria was going to kill him.

Slowly he got his thoughts together. “I’m sorry to bother you so early Mrs. Hail.” He said to his teacher. “But something happened a month ago and I think you should know about it. Can we please talk?”

Maria

Where was Tanner? He had left this morning without bothering to tell her where he was going, moron, Maria briefly thought. She was in Humanologies and he still hadn’t arrived yet, and Tanner Preston was almost never late. She wondered if he was still mad at her for ruining Hayden’s sand dragon. Or maybe he was mad at her because she’d lived up to her promise and destroyed the entire sculpture while no one was watching—well, no one except Tanner. He just happened to be there when she was furiously smashing the thing to the ground. A horrible thought suddenly crossed her mind. What if Tanner was “sick” again? Would that mean she would be getting a second ability too? She already has enough trouble controlling her telekinesis; a second power would be too much for her.

Maria was so deep in her thoughts that she hadn’t noticed she’d been staring at her pencil the whole time; sure enough it had slowly started to levitate. She grabbed it before anyone could notice the strange pencil floating in mid air.

She was scribbling in one of her note books, when someone knocked on the classroom door. Maria lifted her head, hoping to find see her brother finally walk in, but instead only saw Mrs. Hail. “Sorry for disturbing your class Mr. Connors.” She said to the Humanologies teacher. “But I need to see Hayden Brooks and Miss Preston.” I’m Miss Preston, Maria thought to herself with a smile, Hayden is just Hayden. She’s nothing like the rest of her kind.

“Of course. Miss Preston, Hayden.” Mr. Connors said to them. “Please grab your things and follow Mrs. Hail. You can come back later during lunch to catch up on what you missed.” The two of them got up and left the classroom with the teacher.

As they walked, neither of them spoke to each other; why would they? Last she checked, Hayden hated her and she hated Hayden, and Maria had no problem with that what so ever.

She was expecting to go to Mrs. Hail’s class room, but the teacher took an early left turn and led them to the complete other end of the school, to the principles’ office. When they entered, Head Mistress Sage and Head Master Beau were both standing behind a big old fashioned desk. Tanner was there too, he was sitting in an old leather chair, far away from everyone else. At the sight of her brother, Maria instantly knew why she was here, why they were all here. She had just been betrayed by her own twin.

Furious, Maria focused her gaze on the chair her brother was sitting on and in the seconds it flew across the room and Tanner fell right on the floor.

            “Maria!” He shouted.

“You swore!” She yelled at him tears flowing down her face ruining her makeup. “You swore that you wouldn’t say anything until I was ready!” She looked back at the chair that was across the room and ordered it mentally to fly back to Tanner, which it did. The chair broke in half when it hit her brother’s head.

“Maria!” Mrs. Hail shouted, clearly not sure if she should intervene. “Stop this nonsense otherwise there will be serious consequences!”

“Wasn’t I already going to be punished?” Maria yelled back with a cruel laugh, still using her power to throw things at her brother. “I killed my French teacher!”

“No you didn’t! He was just gravely injured and won’t be returning.” Isaac said trying to make the tension in the room go away.

“LIAR!” She screamed. Maria suddenly felt a pair of strong arm immobilizing her and another pair covering her eyes to block her mental commends to objects. “Tanner!” She yelled in enraged. “Tell you disciples to LET GO OF ME!”

“Maria, calm down!” She heard her brother respond, annoyed.

“Preston” She then heard Hayden whisper to Tanner. “You need to do something before she hurts anyone else.”

“I’ll take care of it, but she’s going to be in a hell of a mood when this is over.” He responded decidedly.

Suddenly, the pair of arms that were around her body and eyes were gone. She was momentarily confused and that was all her twin needed. The last thing she remembered was seeing Tanner fist closing up on her face, before everything went dark.

 ....

Maria woke up in the bed of her dorm room. Her real one; the one she’d be assigned to in the beginning of the year. Slowly rising to her feet, she looked around and saw that all of her stuff piled up on the floor. Her nose was hurting but she knew it wasn’t broken. She was a vampire after all; if it had broken it was probably already healed. Why was her nose hurting anyway? She didn’t recall hurting herself, did she? Then she remembered, Tanner; the traitor.

Maria got out of her bed and hurried to the door, but when she tried to open it she quickly discovered that it was locked. Not willing to admit defeat, she attempted to kick it down but for some reason it didn’t want to fall. She then tried to make it move using telekinesis, but she found out that it was impossible. Because the door was obviously indestructible, Maria then focused her attention on the nearest window. Not willing to waste any more time, she grabbed a chair and threw it with all her strength towards the window, but the glass didn’t shatter. Completely confused, Maria then tried to break it using telekinesis and then realized that she had no idea how. Out of ideas, Maria decided that maybe she could just wait for Gwen to come back so her roommate could open the door for her. But what if she wasn’t allowed to come? What if the Head Masters had permanently locked Maria in her dorm room for the rest of the semester?! Then what was she suppose to do? With a loud frustrated cry, the Day Walker let herself fall on the floor. She was completely alone; trapped in her own room.

Starting now, I'll do my best to update regularly because my mermaid story is finish until September. Besides, I've already finished writing Walkers, I'm just editing it and then posting afterwards.
