"hello?" I tried one last time
I was about to just give up and turn back around when I felt something get caught at the bottom of my wheelchair. As soon as I moved the wheelchair jerked forward making me go down the long stairs.
"AAAGGGHHHHHH!" I screamed as I traveled down until I hit the ground face down
I tried lifting my head seeing a dark figure approaching me but the blacked out immediately.

"Adonis you better not scare the boy away okay?" India said as she braided my hair
"I didn't ask you to play match maker for me, with some dude at that"
"he's not some dude, he's Nikki's cousin and man he is fine. I just figured bitches ain't really working out for you, you need a man to come lay some pipe on you to get it right" She said sticking out her tongue
"you know, there is something seriously wrong with you" I said looking at her through the mirror
"duh, oh and by the way he's dl so if he don't make any moves on you don't take it personal"
"wow and you set me up with a dl nigga. you lucky I'm only doing this as a favor and not actually looking for someone" I said rolling my eyes
My door barged open and my mom strolled in with her uniform on.
"you guys going out?" She asked standing near the door
"yeah in a lil bit" I answered
"Hi mom" India said cheerfully
"Hey sweetheart. no Dominic tonight?"
"nah he went upstate with his dad and stepmom"
"oh ok. well you guys be careful out there, don't get in no trouble" She said before walking out
India finished braiding the last braid then stood up to finish her make up. I walked over to my bed and slipped on my new red tech sweater and matching tech joggers.
"what time they coming to pick us up?" I asked as I put on my finishing touches
"they should be here in...right now" She said once her phone started to ring
I buckled my gold watch around my left hand then grabbed my phone off the nightstand. I really need a new phone, my mom got me sitting here with the small iPhone 5. Not even a 5s so I don't even got fingerprint, shameful.
"okay we'll be down in a second" She said before hanging up the phone
"how do I look?" She asked standing up so I could get a full look at her outfit
She wore a short red dress with a black and white trench coat over and some heels. She looked cute no doubt, but it's like 40° outside.
"you better not ask me to wear my sweater because I'm gonna tell you to freeze your ass off" I said
"whatever, let's go" She said holding her hand out so I could grab it, as if I were a little boy who needed to hold mommy's hand
"bitch if you don't get that hand out my face" I said mean mugging her
She stuck the middle finger up at me then skipped her way out of my room. I chuckled and followed behind her downstairs and out the front door.
When we got outside Nikki's black benz was already parked out front. Her and this tall brown skin boy got out to greet us. He wasn't that bad at all.
"Happy birthday baby!" India said running up to hug her
"Happy birthday Nick" I said nodding my head at her
"thanks, thanks" She said lifting India up and kissing her
"and you must be Ayoub" I said hoping that I hadn't butchered his name
"yeah" He chuckled showing off his deep dimples "and you're Adonis?"
"yup" I said awkwardly
"aight let's go, ya'll two get in the back" Nikki said as she walked over to the drivers side
Ayoub walked over and opened the door for me to get in. I see he's tryna make a good impression, or he's just tryna fuck.
"so where you from?" I asked when we were all in the car
"you're asking because of my name right? my dad is Liberian and my mom is just Caucasian" He answered
"oh cool, it's a nice name" I said
The ride to the restaurant was quiet and awkward, well at least for Ayoub and I. India and Nikki were up in front talking about how lit they were gonna get later tonight at a hotel, some of the details were a little too much for me to hear.
"why couldn't we just go to applebee's?" India complained as we walked in
"how about because it's not your birthday" I said making Ayoub smile
"nobody asked you" She said rolling her eyes
They didn't have anymore table's for four so we had to get two different table's that sat up to two. This instantly went from a birthday dinner to a double date, technically just a date since it was Ayoub and I alone sitting at a table.
"so..." I said trying not to look at him too hard
"this is awkward" He said smiling
"very"
"well it doesn't have to be that awkward. tell me about yourself" He said leaning back in his chair
"umm ok...I'm sixteen and I'm a senior, I started school early if you were wondering. I uh, I live with my mom, my dad died when I was around one years old. my birthday is on valentine's day, I love eating, I could do it all day, but I hate vegetables. my favorite subject is math, I love the colors blue and black and I like to read"
"oh word, so if I order you a bowl of vegetables right now you wouldn't eat it?" He asked
"well obviously not if I just said I hate vegetables, and you're definitely not ordering my food for me. I'm picky as fuck when it comes to my food"
"a nigga that like to eat, interesting" He said holding his chin
"what about you, what do you like and dislike?" I asked
"I like to draw, I'm a comic book guy and all I do is watch shows like Arrow, the Flash, things like that. I'm not the smartest when it comes to school work which I'm trying to get better at. uhh...I'm not really crazy about sports, I'm the type of nigga to only watch basketball during the finals, maybe even just the final game. I have five younger siblings, and I live with my pops, my mom...it's difficult to explain" He said looking down, I guess to prevent tears
"five younger siblings!" I said raising my eyebrows
"yeah, and one older brother. together there are seven of us" He said laughing
"damn your parent's were getting it in"
"fasho. I walked in on them making baby number four, that was the last time I ever entered their room when they were in there together"
I couldn't help but laugh at that. I wonder what I would do if I had walked in on my parents fucking, just the thought of that is weird. I can't even stand when I walk in on my mom naked with her saggy titties, looking like someone gnawed on them.
"you have a cute smile" He randomly said
"thanks, so do you especially with them dimples" I said back smiling mad hard now
The waiter finally came over and took our order. This boy really tried to order me a bowl of mixed vegetables, he must've thought I was kidding when I said I was in love with food and don't play around when it comes to it.
"so are you gay or this is your first time I guess being out with a guy like that?" I asked trying to make conversation
"nah, I'm straight as fuck just sitting across from a beautiful guy who I'm tryna cuff" He said sarcastically
"I had to ask, some of ya'll niggas be jacking ya'll straight then want to be in them guts. and from what I heard you were dl so..." I said before taking a long sip from my water
"I think niggas who say that are stupid, it's either you gay and like ass or you straight and like pussy. you can't sit there jacking you straight then later on you in another nigga's ass talking bout 'no homo', unless you bi but then obviously you're not straight. and I only told her to say that to you cuz I didn't know how you would be like and it's easier to end things when a nigga is dl." He explained
"true...wait did you just say you were tryna cuff?" I asked just now picking up on it
"yeah well I barely know you and I could already tell that you have a great energy and I'm pretty sure we would sync."
I didn't know what to say to that, I'm not used to hearing people say that to me. Luckily the waiter came back with our food so that I didn't have to say anything.
The rest of the dinner was normal I guess, we ate and got to know each other some more. I found out he was 18 and a senior just like me, he had to repeat senior year, his birthday was in June, and he owns a snake. After we ate the waiters brought out a free birthday cake for Nikki and even sang for her.
After we ate the cake Ayoub paid for the bill and then we left. They wanted to go to the movie theater to catch a flick before we parted ways so we went to the one a couple block from the restaurant. It was nice out so instead of taking the car we choose to walk. India and Nikki were walking too slow though so we were up ahead just having our own conversations.
"so did you really mean what you said in there, that we would sync, or were you just tryna make conversation?" I asked as we walked
"yeah I meant it. there's something special about you, I don't know what is it yet, I don't even think you realize it yet, but I plan on finding out what it is" He said huskily
Man this nigga know just the right words to say. Obviously it's probably just an act but hey I'm down with getting fooled for the night.
We arrived at the movie theater in a couple of minutes and decided to not wait for them since they were taking so long. Ayoub bought us tickets to see Batman v Superman since he said he had been feening to watch it. I had already watched it but I didn't say anything because he looked excited. In addition he bought a large popcorn, some candy and large drinks.
"you really didn't need to get all this, I just ate dinner, not that I'm complaining" I said as we walked into the theater
We were a little late because the movie had already started but it was just the beginning and nothing important ever happens in the beginning. I was munching on the popcorn and sipping my drink when I felt his eyes on me, even in this darkness.
"what's wrong?" I asked turning to look at him
"nothing. it's just that you're so...perfect" He said looking me in the eye
"thanks" I said then turned back to the screen
This continued on for the first half of the movie until he actually started to pay attention to what he had paid for. Having his company was great, he was nice, good looking and charming. He was corny too, he tried the yawn and stretch thing to get his arm around my shoulder. I thought it was stupid and ridiculous but I let him do it anyways, it was cute.
"thanks, for the awesome night" I said to him when the movie was over
"nah thank you for being here with me. can I ask you one more thing though before we leave?" He asked looking down
"sure"
"hey I just met you, and this is crazy, but can I get your number, to call you maybe?" He sang
I burst out in laughter, not in a mocking way but more like he's so stupid and cute way.
"well since you put it that way, yes you can have my number" I chuckled
"score!" He cheered
I went in his pocket and took out his phone and installed my number into it.
"well well, if it isn't the ditchers" I heard India say from behind us
"you guys were walking slow, so it's your fault" I said
"whatever, we're ready to leave" She said
"aight, well I'll see you sometime?" I said turning back to look at him
"definitely" He said with a smile

"ugh" I grunted as my eyes peered open
I felt arms around me and when I fully got my sight back I noticed that I was in Damien's arms. He smiled down at me and kissed my forehead.
"what are you doing out of bed?" He asked lifting me up
"I heard some noises, I was calling your name...that was you?" I asked
"oh sorry babe, I was tryna make a smoothie. I had my beats on that's why I didn't hear you" He said
"what...what tripped me?" I asked
"I think it was one of Pissy's toys. it must've fell there when we were leaving"
"how long was I out?" I asked as he carried me over to the couch
"I think for a minute or so. as soon as I heard you falling I ran over, then you blacked out" He explained
I looked over to the staircase to see my wheelchair broken in parts lying around. Now how was I supposed to get around?
"I think it's time I try and walk" I said trying my best to sit up but failing
"you just had surgery a week ago, your physical therapy isn't even for another five weeks. don't rush this, it takes time" He said walking away to the kitchen area
"it's only been a week and not being able to walk in driving me insane, I thought I could do it but I can't. I want to be able to walk up on that stage next week and get my diploma, not wheel myself up there and look miserable"
"next week isn't about whether or not you can walk, it's about celebrating all that you have achieved. I'm sorry I got you in that chair, I really am and I wish it were me, but it's not the end of your life. you don't need to walk to get things done, there are millions of paralyzed people who still are successful, don't let this limit your ability to do great"
He walked back over with two smoothies in his hand, handing me the one with the straw in it. The door flew open and in walked Dom and Dillon with Tyler following behind.
"what happened here?" Dom said pointing to the wheelchair pieces
"he tripped and fell down the stairs" Damien answered as I drank the smoothie
"flew" I corrected him then continued to drink the peanut butter and banana smoothie
"damn, you okay?" Tyler asked
I nodded my head and shrugged. Dillon sighed then ran up the stairs ignoring the wheelchair parts on the floor, I guess I'm still getting the cold shoulder.
"India wants to know who's going on the trip, can we count you in?" Dom asked sitting at my feet
I looked up at Damien to see what he thought. I told him about the trip, he said it would be a good way to get my mind off things. He also offered to come with if I wanted him to. I wanted to go, it seemed cool, but I didn't want to be a burden on them. I can't do most things there so it would be a waste of time bringing me along when the most I could do is sit in the hotel room all day.
"yeah he's in" Damien answered for me
"how long are we staying and how much are we each paying?" I asked
"three days, we're leaving on Tuesday and getting back Friday morning before graduation. and everyone's paying for their own hotel rooms so that's on you to find out. we'll be up in my room, think about it" He said then got up to go upstairs with Tyler
"babe I'll be back, I needa go talk to Dillon" Damien said before also going upstairs
I finished my smoothie then began to think about my flashback I had when I was out. I totally forgot about Ayoub. He was the first guy I ever been with like that. After our dinner/movie date we talked for a couple of weeks. It was going really well, he's who I lost my virginity to. We ended up falling out though, I can't remember why. All I know is that it happened about a week before my birthday.
So if we never fell off maybe Damien and I wouldn't be together right now. It's crazy how the world works. I should give him a call, I know his birthday is this month. Who knows maybe we could become friends again.
