The bell rang

Inside John Quincy Adams Middle School.

Maya. Riley and Elliot were standing near the lockers when Lucas goes to sit down nearby. Elliot was playing an addicting game on his phone.

"Talk to him," Maya ordered.

"Why? We have a great text relationship." Riley told her.

"You know what's a better text relationship?" Maya asked.

"What?" Riley asked.

"Talk to him," Maya ordered.

Riley showed how cute Lucas is on text message.

"El tells her to talk to him," Maya told Elliot

"Huh, yeah, sure whatever. I need to beat my high score." Elliot when back to his game.

Maya rolled her eyes.

"He's right over there," Maya told her.

"Noooo! Too complicated over there. Lots can go wrong over there. The only thing that can go wrong over here is if I go over there."Riley told her.

Maya pointed to Lucas, basically ordering Riley to go to him.

Riley went behind him and attempted to say 'Hi' several times, but only mouthed it.

"Talk to him."Maya mouthed.

Riley nodded.

The next thing you know, she sniffed Lucas' neck and went back to Maya.

"How'd I do?" Riley asked.

"You smelled him," Maya stated as she handed Riley back her books.

"Yup." Riley nodded.

"You smelled him is what you did," Maya stated.

"I walk through life, the way I walk through life." Riley smiled.

"Can we please talk about this?" Maya begged.

Riley texted Maya

"Nope." Maya read the text.

"Hey, bonehead." Maya tried to get Elliot's attention.

"Yes, honey." Elliot didn't look up from his game.

"It's time for class," Maya told him.

Elliot jumped on his skateboard and rode to class.

History classroom.

Cory was holding a cell phone.

"You guys don't connect with each other. It's like you can't exist without these. You use emoticons rather than emotions. You're an unfeeling generation of zombies." Cory told the class.

Elliot and Maya leaned in and pretended to eat Riley's brains like zombies.

"Stop eating her," Cory demanded.

Myzell suddenly came in with a poker face.

"You're late, Miss Myzell, "Cory told her.

"My goldfish died," Myzell informed him flatly.

"You see? This is what I'm talking about; Miss Myzell has clearly suffered a tragic loss. Yet, she does not seem in touch with her actual emotions." Cory told the class.

"Excuse me? I am crying my eyes out. I'm going to have to leave class early." Myzell told him flatly and then left.

"Oh, she actually made it out the door this time," Cory said, amazed, and opened the door.

"I actually made it out the door this time!" Myzell said, amazed.

"Dad, adjust, and deal. Cell phones have been around for, like, ever." Elliot told her.

"It'll amaze you to know that there was a whole world before you and cell phones," Cory told him.

"And it'll amaze you to know that I have 394 friends in here."Riley tapped her cell phone screen.

"And I'm amazed that you believe that," Cory told her.

Cory drew a line across the chalkboard.

"This is a timeline of all human existence. Starting here." Cory points at the start of the timeline.

"Is everyone who ever lived, laughed, loved, and understood the value of life. The cellphone era, which begins right around...here." Cory drew a line almost at the end of the timeline.

"Pretty much destroys all of that. Way to go, you." Cory told the class.

"Aw, you're so sweet." Elliot smiled sarcastically.

Cory looked at his son, weirdly.

"Sir, if I may take a different position?" Lucas raised his hand.

"Yeah, save me, Mr. Friar. Do I go too far?" Cory asked.

"Always, sir. I understand your point, but I use my phone to video chat my old friends and to find out what's going on in Texas." Lucas told him.

"Yeah. How else can he keep tabs on all the hoedowns." Maya smiled sarcastically in a southern accent.

"Don't forget the cattle pageants." Elliot smiled using a southern accent.

"Maya! Elliot!" Riley scolded.

"It's okay, Riley. I'm unaffected by their views of country life. As my Uncle Buster always says, 'Be like an eagle and soar above the mockingbirds.' " Lucas smiled.

Maya and Elliot looked annoyed.

"You're the mockingbirds," Riley said in a sing-song voice.

"We know." They said in unions.

"It kills me that I can't get to you." Maya turned towards Lucas.

"Sorry, ma'am." Lucas tipped an imaginary hat.

Maya shuddered in annoyance and turned away.

"Stay away from my sister, and we won't have a problem." Elliot glared at Lucas.

Lucas just smiled at him.

"Farkle time, sir?" Farkle raised his hand.

"Oh, I love Farkle time." Cory smiled.

Farkle and Cory switched places happily.

"With all due respect to history, Mr. Matthews, what's important to our generation will be on this side of the timeline, when Farkle and technology rule," Farkle smirked.

"And I will easily be able to make another one of you." Farkle pulled a strand of hair out of Riley's head.

"Ow," Riley said in slight pain.

"And another one of you." Farkle pulled a strand of hair out of Maya's head.

"Ow," Maya said flatly.

"And last but not least another one of you.'" Farkle pulled a strand of hair out Elliot's head.

"Ow?" Elliot said, confused.

"Why me?" Elliot asked.

"You're gonna die someday. I need you around El."Farkle told him.

"He needs me." Elliot smiled.

Everybody rolled his eyes.

"Wait, so now there's six of us and one of you?" Riley asked.

"That's awesome. The future, you can't escape it, I am Farkle!" With that, Farkle and Cory switched placed again.

"The assignment, you can't escape it, I am teacher!" Cory smiled.

Nobody laughed.

"No dad, no." Elliot shook his head.

"Okay, so here's what we're going to do, guys. We're going to split into teams and discover whether or not new technology has made us better people. You'll do presentations on your findings. And here's a twist. No computers." Cory told the class.

"What?!" Farkle yelled.

"We're going old school. You're going to do your research at the New York Public Library." Cory told the class.

'Where?!' Maya yelled.

"And here's another twist because I trust you not at all. Give me your cell phones." Cory told the class.

"No!" Riley grabbed her phone protectively.

"This is so unfair!" Elliot yelled.

"Don't care. Come on, hand 'em up, hand 'em up." Cory told the class.

Everybody started complaining, and Cory began collecting.

Elliot stood up.

"This is America! And America is a free country! Therefore I still have my rights!" Elliot yelled.

Cory began to grabbed Elliot's phone, but Elliot wrestled for it.

"No, No! I haven't beaten my high score yet" Elliot yelled.

"Give me the phone!" Cory won.

Elliot pouted and sat down.

"Okay, so our teams for this assignment. Maya." Cory began.

"What up!" Farke sat on Maya's lap, and Maya pushed him off.

"Elliot go with them; make sure they don't kill each other," Cory told his son.

"Cool," Elliot smirked.

"And Riley, you will be with..." Cory began.

Riley and Lucas smiled.

"No!"Cory yelled.

"No!" Elliot yelled.

The bell rang

"No!" They yelled in unions.

Everybody began to leave.

"Why did you have to come here?" Cory asked Lucas.

"Sorry I make you uneasy, sir." With that, Lucas left.

"Oh, Dad, we don't even have our phones. I mean, what could possibly happen?" With that, Riley left.

"What have you done?"Elliot glared at his father.

"What have I done. I should have paired you with Riley." Cory told his son.

"You, think." With that, Elliot left.

John Quincy Adams Middle School.

Riley, Maya, Elliot, and Lucas were in the hallway.

"Hey, soaring eagle, you walkin' with us to the library tonight?" Maya asked.

"Sure, if that's good with you guys," Lucas told them.

"Not with me." Elliot shook his head.

Maya covered Elliot's mouth

"Well, seeing as how you're Riley's partner on this assignment, I guess we should find out if it's okay with her. Riley?" Maya asked.

Riley just stood still.

"Riley, any thoughts on this that might come out of your mouth in word form?...No, because you don't have your phone anymore, so what are you going to do to communicate, I wonder?" Maya asked sarcastically.

Riley put two thumbs up.

"Oh, look at that. Two thumbs up from Riley." Maya stated.

Riley smiled

"And a smiley face," Maya added.

Matthews' apartment. The family was eating dinner.

"It was a good day. And then my friends treated me nicely. And then my teacher measured us, and then I'm growing. And then Jenny Lewis loves me. I think because I'm growing." Auggie smiled.

"It wasn't a good day." Riley began.

"And then our friend pulled our hair out," Elliot added.

"And then our teacher took our phones away," Riley added.

"And then my teacher was also my father." Elliot finished.

"At least you guys are growing." Auggie tried to cheer them up.

They just ignored them.

"Honeys please don't come apart. Look at this as a beautiful opportunity to spend time with your family." Topanga told them.

"Hello, Riley." Auggie smiled

"Auggie," Riley stated.

"Hello, Elly." Auggie smiled.

"How you doin'?"Elliot asked.

"Want to hear about my day? It was a good day." Auggie started.

"Mom!"The twins yelled in unions.

"Forgive them Auggie. They miss their telephones." Topanga told him.

"Well, then they can have mine."Auggie put his toy phone in the center.

The twins looked at each other, then began fighting for it.

Elliot won. He pressed a button.

"The cow goes..." The toy began.

"Moo!" Auggie finished.

"Are you kidding me?" Elliot yelled.

"We're not gonna make it." Riley declared.

"That's what your father thinks," Topanga told them.

"They can't," Cory told her.

"Honeys, please don't make your father right. It's no good for any of us when your father is right." Topanga told them.

"She's right." Cory nodded.

"Why are you doing this?" Elliot asked.

"Because I want you and your friends to become human beings. And I believe that by doing this, you guys can learn to become real human beings." Cory told him.

"Hey, losers, it's Maya." The intercom buzzed.

"Except her." Cory pointed at the intercom.

"You know what? I am going to do this. I can get through this whole thing without making a text or a call." Riley walked over to the intercom and pressed the button.

"Come on up," Riley told Maya.

"Me too." Elliot nodded.

"Of course, you two can. And you know what? You're already wonderful human beings, but every so often, little tests like this are gonna come up." Topanga told them.

"Why?" Riley asked.

"Because it's your father's job to give you little tests. And maybe along the way, you guys are going to learn a little bit more about yourselves." Topanga told them.

Elliot and Riley smiled.

"Yeah, like I've learned that I'm actually really okay with all of this." Maya came in.

"You don't miss your phone, Maya?" Topanga asked.

"I was the only one in class without a smartphone anyway, and now I kind of feel like everybody's even." Maya shrugged.

"Farkle."The intercom buzzed.

"Be ready in a minute!"Riley yelled.

"And Lucas." The intercom buzzed.

"Ready now!"Riley grabbed Maya's hand and ran out.

"Hey, wait for me!" Elliot ran out too.

"Did you see that? You know what that was? That was boys. Too soon for boys. Not ready for boys. I don't want boys. We just gonna accept boys?" Cory kept on asking.

"It happened, she's gone. She was nice; we had fun. He was gone a long time ago. He is there to protect her, but we still have him!" Topanga pointed to Auggie.

"You wanna color?" Topanga asked eagerly.

"Color!"Auggie exclaimed.

"Of course, you do, let's color for the rest of our lives!" Topanga took out paper and crayons.

"Will I be getting a real cell phone someday?" Auggie asked.

"Someday."Topanga nodded.

"Dominic Falcone has a real cell phone," Auggie told them.

"Would you rather have a real cell phone or would you rather color with us?" Topanga asked.

"Color with you." Auggie fist bumps with Cory.

"Does that get me a cell phone?" Auggie asked.

"Not too much longer with this one either," Topanga told Cory.

"Well, you'll always have me." Cory smiled.

"Yeah." Topanga smiled.

New York Public Library.

Farkle, Elliot Riley, Maya, and Lucas entered.

"What is this place?" Lucas asked.

"This is where the ancients stored all of their wisdom," Farkle told him.

"Look at all of those..."Maya pointed toward books.

"Books," Farkle told her.

"Books." Elliot, Maya, and Riley said in unions.

"Look." Lucas pulled out a book from the shelf and blew the dust off of the cover.

"Tales Of Human Interaction." Lucas read the title.

"We'll take it. Thanks, quickdraw." Maya grabbed the book.

"Farkle, Elliot do whatever you do with that." Maya dropped the book on the table.

"You mean read?" Farkle asked.

"Chapter One..." Elliot opened the book.

"Oh, I'm bored out of my mind, let's go to a movie," Maya told them

"Shh!" The Librarian shushed them.

Riley, Maya, Lucas, and Farkle:

"Ah!"The group yelled as they turned.

"There's one of those ancients now." Farkle pointed to the Librarian.

They walked over to her.

"Oh, wondrous gatekeeper of the knowledge, we are travelers from another time and place," Farkle told her.

"Seventh-grade middle school," Riley told her.

"We wish to partake of this information from your great hall of wisdom," Farkle told her.

"Do you rent phones?" Elliot asked.

"Shh!" The Librarian shushed them.

"There's no one here but us," Lucas told her.

Why do we have to shush?" Maya asked.

"Let me handle this, Maya. She obviously likes it quiet. Care to join me, El?" Farkle asked.

"Dude I don't flirt with old ladies," Elliot told him.

"Hello, book lady." Farkle flirted.

"Well, hello. And who might you be?" She asked.

"I might be Farkle." Farkle flirted.

"Would you do me a favor, Farkle?" She asked politely.

"Oh, you know I will." Farkle flirted.

"Why don't you go over there and... Shh!" She pointed to another part of the library.

Elliot chuckled.

"Well, that's disappointing." Farkle went to the table to sit down with Maya and Elliot, leaving Riley and Lucas alone.

"So." Riley began.

"Yeah." Lucas nodded.

"Uh-huh." Riley nodded.

______________________________________________________________

The Library

Elliot, Maya, and Farkle were sitting on a table.

"This chapter's called 'Disconnect To Connect.' " Farkle told them.

"Not until we put down our phones, switch off our computers, and look in each other's eyes, we won't be able to touch each other's hearts." Maya read.

"Yeah, like that's going to work on anybody." Elliot chuckled.

_______________________________________________________________

The Library

Riley and Lucas looked into each other's eyes.

_______________________________________________________________

New York Public Library.

Farkle, Elliot, and Maya were sitting on a window ledge. Maya had a notepad.

"People used to need places like this. Now we can hold everything that's here in a little device we can put in our pockets. I don't even need to look out this window to know what phase the moon is in or where the stars are." Farkle told them

"Yeah, well, I don't have a phone like that, I just have the actual sky." Maya sighed.

"Oh, I'm so sorry for you. You're at a real disadvantage. That can be the basis of our presentation, okay? Wanna read back the notes?" Farkle asked.

"What notes?" Maya asked, confused.

"You weren't taking notes?"Farkle asked.

"Does she look like the person who would take notes?" Elliot chuckled.

"You know, why bother? Without a computer, all we have is a pencil and a pad. What could we possibly do with that?" Farkle asked.

Elliot grabbed the pad from Maya, which has a drawing of the night sky on it.

"Woah, "Farkle said, amazed.

"Maya. I had no idea." Elliot was speechless.

"It looks like something you would see in a dream. Moonshining starts surrounding the sky. Protecting you from the demons of life." Elliot described the drawing.

"Woah Elliot, you really have a way with words," Maya said amazed.

"Yeah, I want to be a writer someday. I'm writing a book right now. You all are in it " Elliot told them.

"We are?!" Farkle and Maya yelled, shocked.

"Shhhhhhh!" The Librarian shushed them.

___________________________________________________________________________________________

New York Public Library.

Riley and Lucas were researching for their project.

"My dad thinks that we have no idea how to talk to each other," Riley told him.

"What if he's right?" Lucas asked.

"Shh!" The Librarian shushed them

"But, we're not saying anything," Lucas told her.

"I know." She sighed.

"Then why are you shushing us?" Riley asked

"Because I can't take it anymore. You guys are hopeless. Come here." She told Riley.

Riley walked to the Librarian's desk.

"Couple of sweet kids like you and you sit there like a couple of lumps. You're a disgrace to every single story on these shelves," She told Riley.

"Okay, so what do I say to him?" Riley asked.

"Look around. Nothing here but books about boys and girls and men and women and what they say to each other. Open any one of them and you..." She was speaking when...

Riley picked up a book.

"No, not that one." She stopped Riley.

Riley picked up another book,

"Oh, boy, not that one! Look, all these books have one thing in common." She told Riley.

"What's that?"Riley asked.

"You start on page one, and each page you turn brings you deeper into the story. What's your name?" She asked.

"Riley," Riley told her.

"What's his name?" She asked.

"Lucas," Riley told her.

"You like a good story, Riley?" She asked.

Riley nodded.

"Then start at the beginning." She told Riley.

"Hi" Riley walked up to Lucas.

"Hi." He smiled back.

Riley sat down next to him.

_______________________________________________________________

Farkle. Maya and Elliot

"Because it's not until you really looked at each other and made a human connection that you can even begin to know each other." Elliot read.

"Look in my eyes," Farkle told Maya desperately.

"No.'"Maya shook her head.

"Look in my eyes," Farkle repeated.

"No," Maya repeated.

"Look in my eyes," Farkle repeated a third time

"No!" Maya yelled.

"Dude." Elliot gave Farkle a look.

_____________________________________________________________

Riley and Lucas

"I guess the thing I miss most about Texas are the pets I used to have," Lucas told her.

"Elliot and I had a hamster," Riley told him.

'I had 24 horses." Lucas smiled.

"You win. Tell me about them." Riley told him.

"One day after school, Sofia was foaling," Lucas told her.

"That means she was giving birth, right?" Riley asked.

"Not too bad, city girl. And there was no one there, so I called Dr. Galendo, and he talked me through it. Anyway, that was all." Lucas told her.

"More," Riley told him.

"Did you know that a baby horse stands in the first hour after it's born?" Lucas asked.

"Really? I'd like to have been there for that." Riley told him.

"The coolest thing I've ever seen and I was a part of it. Riley." Lucas smiled.

"Lucas." Riley smiled.

"I've never told this to anybody before," Lucas told her.

"Yeah?" Riley asked, trying to hide her excitement.

"I think someday I might like to be a veterinarian," Lucas told her.

"That's cool, too." Riley smiled politely.

"I delivered this beautiful palomino. I'd show you her picture, but I don't have my phone." Lucas told her.

"That's okay. Just keep talking." Riley told him.

______________________________________________________________________________

Maya, Farkle, and Elliot.

"There is no connection you can make with any screen that compares to the moment you understand only human beings have souls." Elliot read.

_______________________________________________________________________________

Lucas and Riley smiled at each other.

________________________________________________________________________________

Maya, Elliot, and Farkle

"I have a soul," Farkle said, desperately.

"No." Maya shook her head.

"I do!" Farkle insisted.

"No," Maya repeated.

"I do!" Farkle repeated.

"No!" Maya yelled.

"Dude." Elliot gave Farkle a look.

_______________________________________________________________________________

Matthews' apartment.

Auggie, Cory, and Topanga were talking.

"I colored a new picture," Auggie told them.

"Stay like this forever." Topanga smiled.

"Would you please? That'd be great." Cory smiled.

"The picture's over there. Mommy, Daddy, Auggie, and no Riley or Elly." Auggie pointed to the wall.

"Uh, Auggie, I don't know if you..." Cory began.

"It's beautiful!" Topanga smiled.

"I think that's what you're supposed to do; I have no idea," Topanga told Cory.

"And look at the 'refrigerator." Auggie pointed to the fridge.

"The new one?" Topanga asked.

"That's our trip to the Jersey Shore," Auggie explained.

"It's beautiful. It's beautiful. I think that's what you're supposed to do." Topanga told Cory as Auggie left.

Riley and Elliot came in. Riley had a huge smile on her face like she had the best day ever.

"You did this!" Elliot hissed at his father.

"How was your night, kids?" Cory asked.

"Thank you for sending us to the library." Riley smiled.

"Really?" Cory asked, shocked.

"Yes. Lucas and I did really well on the assignment. I think that we connected." Riley told him.

"This is your fault!" Elliot hissed at his father.

"What do you mean, connected? What are you talking about? How did you connect?"Cory kept on asking questions worried.

"Oh, you haven't even heard the worst part!" Elliot hissed.

"We talked about stuff that was important to us. Too important to text. Did you know that, when you listen to someone, they'll tell you stuff?" Riley asked.

"Oh, boy." Cory sighed.

"Yeah 'Oh boy'." Elliot mocked.

"Friends talk to each other, but real friends listen. Maya knows how to draw. Elliot has a love for writing, and, I know how to be a real friend. You're a good teacher, Dad. You can keep my phone as long as you want." Riley hugged Cory and left.

"Why would do this? Why!" Elliot yelled.

"Congratulations, Cory." Topanga smiled.

"What did I do?" Cory asked, confused.

"You just taught our daughter how to feel," Topanga told him.

"I did that?" Cory asked.

"You did." Topanga nodded.

"You did!" Elliot hissed.

"I didn't mean to do that." Cory shook his head.

"Well, you did," Topanga told him.

'Thanks a lot, dad." Elliot said sarcastically.

"She has feelings now?" Cory asked worriedly.

"Mm-hmm." Topanga nodded.

"How many?" Cory asked worriedly.

"All of them," Topanga told him.

"Well, put them back," Cory said, desperately.

"Yeah, mom put them back," Elliot whined.

"We can't do that," Topanga told them.

I have a way." Cory nodded.

"You have a way?" Elliot asked.

"There's no way." Topanga shook her head.

"I have a way." Cory nodded.

"You better have a way." Elliot gave him a look.

John Quincy Adams Middle School

History classroom.

"Here you go, take your phone. Take it now. Very good. Here's your phone. Good, great, nobody talks to nobody. No more feelings. Thank you." Cory smiled after he returned everybody's phones.

"This is a terrible way," Elliot told him.

"You got any bright ideas?" Cory asked.

Elliot just rolled his eyes.

"Okay, guys, the great technology debate. Let's boot it up!" Cory told the class.

Riley, Maya, Elliot Lucas, and Farkle walked up to the front of the classroom.

Farkle held up a phone.

"I have always believed technology would help us fulfill our potential as a species. But when Farkle does rule the world, no matter what devices we come up with, we should also never forget what we can do with a pencil, a piece of paper and our own imaginations." Farkle took out Maya's drawing.

"I've been keeping this in my pocket where my phone used to be. I keep looking at it. I'm fine." Farkle smiled

"Thanks, Farkle." Maya smiled.

"There's more. Elliot's writing a book and we're all in it." Farkle revealed.

'Farkle!' Elliot yelled.

"What?!" Everybody but Cory, Farkle, and Maya yelled.

"Okay, okay, yes, yes. I'm writing a book. I want to be a writer." Elliot told everyone.

"The point here is. That none of us knew that. I'm his best friend, and I didn't know that. All because technology blocked us too much." Farkle told them.

"I should have known that." Farkle turned to Elliot.

"Its okay buddy," Elliot told him.

"Look in my eyes." Farkle turned to Maya.

"No." Maya shook her head.

"I thought my whole life was on my phone, but it turns out that I don't really have any friends in here."Riley pointed to her phone.

"And you don't need your phone to connect with your real friends," Riley told the class.

"Allow us to demonstrate," Lucas said as they turned towards each other.

"Hi."Riley greeted.

"Hi." Lucas greeted.

________________________________________________________________________________

New York Public Library.

Cory and Elliot were looking for Maya.

Cory opened up a gap in the bookshelf on the top row.

"I'm not that tall," Maya told them.

Elliot opened up a gap in the bookshelf on the bottom row.

'Really?" Maya asked.

Cory and Elliot opened up a gap in the bookshelf on the middle row.

"How you doin'?" Maya smiled.

"You will keep an eye on Riley at all times" Elliot ordered.

"You will send us message alerts," Cory ordered.

"You will send us pictures." They ordered I'm unions.

"You two are really scared, aren't you guys?" Maya asked with an amused smile.

"I'm a father."Cory shrugged.

"I'm a brother."Elliot shrugged.

"Yeah. They're just friends." Maya told them.

"Oh, please." Elliot scoffed.

"Believe me; I know the story." Cory nodded.

"But you're forgetting; I don't have the technology," Maya told her.

"Now, you do." Cory put a box on the shelf.

Maya walked around to the other side of the bookshelf and opened the box; it was a smartphone.

"You got me a phone?"Maya asked, shocked.

Cory was speechless for a moment.

"My motives are completely selfish," Cory told her.

"I'm not sure they are, Mr. Matthews." Maya slightly smiled.

"Well, I got you these." Elliot handed her a plastic package of colored pencils.

"Colored pencils?" Maya questioned.

"Yeah. You let us know everything that's going on with Riley. And if something beautiful ever happens, paint us a picture." Elliot told her, and they smiled at each other.

Chapter 2: Technology: Helping us or Destroying us?

It's funny how a homework assignment where technology isn't allowed brings people closer together. I found out that my girl had a passion for drawing. Her drawings were breathtaking. Also my best friend: Farkle Minkus, the scientist, a man who is pro-technology had made the most significant discovery of me with no help from technology. Disconnecting helped us connect in the way I can never describe. People say technology helps us communicate and come together quickly but when you find more about the people you care about when you don't have technology was it really helping you or destroying?
