Xander let out a small chuckle. “Hi, Bug,” he said, calling me by my nickname that he used to call me when we were little, after the june bug beetle. Attractive, right? A nickname after a beetle.
“What are you doing here?” I asked again, since he didn’t answer the first time.
Xander shrugged. “My mom remarried a year or so after you guys left, then three years after that she died. So when my step-father decided to come here, I was all for it. I heard from someone that you were here,” he explained, watching me.
I smiled happily and threw myself at him, wrapping my arms around him. I had to stand on my tip-toes, seeing as how he was a towering 6’ 3” to my short 5’ 2”.
“I’ve missed you so much, Xander. You haven‘t changed at all,” I breathed out, the smile still plastered on my face.
“I’ve missed you too, Bug,” Xander answered.
Cassia cleared her throat behind us, and I let out a small laugh. I pulled away from Xander and turned to Cassia. “Cassia, this is Xander. Xander, this is Cassia.” She turned to Xander. “She’s my best friend.”
Xander turned to face Cassia, a grin on his face. “Sorry, Cass; can I call you that?” I watched as Cassia nodded, a confused look on her face. “No offence, but I’ll always be June’s best friend.
It was silent for a moment, then Xander let out a small laugh. “Just kidding, Cass, I can share Bug.”
Cassia glanced at me, an eyebrow raised. “Bug?”
“You know, after the june bug beetle? He used to call me Bug all the time,” I told her, a grin on my face.
Cassia rolled her eyes. “That’s so cheesy.”
I hit Cassia’s arm softly. “It is not, I think it’s cute that he has a nickname for me! Better than your nickname for me!”
“I don’t have a nickname for you,” Cassia said, confused.
“Exactly!” I said, laughing softly. “That’s the point, Cassia.”
Xander laughed at the both of us and wrapped an arm around my waist. It felt natural, and I missed the feeling of him near me.
Cassia glanced down at her watch. “June, I really gotta go. We’re having a family dinner, and if I’m not home soon, my mom will kill me. Are you gonna stay here with Xander?”
I looked up at Xander and he nodded. I turned back to Cassia. “Yeah, I am. See ya, Cass. Have fun at the dinner!” I said.
She snorted. “Oh yeah, oodles of fun,” she stated sarcastically. “Bye June, nice to meet you Xander,” she said before turning to walk away.
“Nice to meet you too Cassia,” Xander called out before he looked down. “Where to, Bug?”
I shrugged. “Uh, wherever. I’ve been in basically every store here,” I told him. “Wherever you want, I guess.”
Xander smiled and took my hand, leading me to some music store at the back of the mall, hidden in the corner. “Huh. I never knew this was back here,” I told him as I walked inside after Xander.
I looked around at the music in the racks, flipping through CDs. On the shelf next to it, there were some records, for quite a bit of money.
I looked over to Xander to where he was talking quietly to a guy with black hair and blue eyes. He looked to be the same age as us. Xander’s eyes flickered over to me, smiling softly.
I turned around and looked at some more of the records, picking out a Nirvana one.
I turned back to the counter just in time to see Xander slip something into his back pocket as he handed a wad of cash to the boy’s hand. He turned and waved me over.
I walked over to the counter slowly and stood next to Xander. “Seth, this is June. I grew up with her.”
I smiled at Seth. “Hi Seth, nice to meet you.”
I could feel Seth’s eyes trailing up and down my body. A grin slowly stretched across his face. “Well hello, beautiful.”
I laughed, not at all creeped out. Since I hung out with Cassia all the time, I always got hit on. “I was wondering if I could buy this?” I asked, handing him the record.
Seth smiled and quickly rung it up. “Twenty dollars, please.”
I was shocked at the price, expecting it to be a lot higher. Seth noticed my surprised expression, and he winked. “I gave you the employee discount, since you’re too lovely to pay the full price.”
Xander rolled his eyes. “Seth, your flirting attempts are fruitless.”
Seth laughed and shrugged. “Hey, man. A guy can try, right?”
Xander shook his head and I just laughed. “Bye, Seth. I’m sure now that I know that this is here and that I’ll get a discount, I’ll be here a lot more often.” I grabbed my bag and added it to my handful of them, then grabbed Xander’s hand and pulled him out.
I pushed half of my bags into Xander’s hand that was carrying his one. “Carry these please.”
Xander groaned. “I’ll never understand why girls shop so much. Like, you probably already have enough clothes, right? Why the hell do you need more?”
I snorted. “Xander, you’ll never understand. You’re a boy. You can live with like, two outfits. No one really cares if a guy wears the same outfit. No one pays attention to that. But if you’re a girl, you’re screwed if you wear the same thing within two weeks of each other.”
Xander rolled his eyes. “Whatever, bug. You ready to go, or do you want to stop at more stores?”
“Let’s go,” I said without thinking about it. I was ready to collapse. I had been shopping all day with Cassia.
Xander led me to the doors. “Do you need a ride home?” he asked, glancing down at me.
“Yes please. Cassia gave me a ride here,” I told him, looking up at him. “Damn you, why are you so tall?” I groaned.
Xander chuckled. “Because I’m a guy?”
I sighed. “Why can’t I be a guy?” Xander gave me a look almost like I was crazy. I laughed. “Just kidding I like being a girl.”
I followed Xander over to his car and put my bags in his trunk along with the ones he already put there. He closed the trunk and I walked over to the passenger side, getting in.
I watched as Xander walked around to the drivers side and opened the door, getting in. I stared out the windshield as he started the car. I told him where I lived and he started his way there.
He stopped at a red light and looked over at me “June, do you really want to go home? Or can we go some where else? Like a park?”
I shrugged. “Park is fine. My parents are out of town, anyway.” I stared out the window as we made our way to the park. Thoughts were buzzing through my mind, all centered around Xander.
Who told him that I was here? How did he know it was me at the mall when I wasn’t even facing him? Had he been following me? If so, how had I not noticed? What did his mom die of? Where was his father, his actual father? Why was Xander living with his step-dad instead of his actual dad? How long had he been in North Carolina? What the hell did he buy from Seth at the store?
I didn’t know the answer to any of the questions, but I was planning on getting them from Xander.
I watched as we pulled into the park parking lot. I unbuckled my seat belt as Xander got out of the car. I went to hit the little button to let the belt go and noticed something on Xander’s seat. I reached over and grabbed it, examining the contents. I opened the car door and looked at Xander from across the roof.
“Xander?” I asked slowly. “What is this?” I asked, holding up the bag.
He cursed quietly. “Looks like I have to explain some things, huh Bug?”
